SpectraSoul - Slippin'

As has been well-documented elsewhere, I spent much of 2012-2014 doing DJ sets of other people's music (as opposed to strictly my own) for the first time since the 90s. I had so much fun hunting around on the internet, looking for the latest weird stuff to work into the set. I once heard a comedian describe their process, how they tried a new joke each night until eventually, they had a solid 75 minutes of their best material. That's how this set felt to me. 2013 was also the peak of EDM, and although I never fully embraced that movement, if you were a DJ, it was impossible not to be influenced by it on some levels. As a result, there's a few moments in the set that, years later, seem a little borderline in terms of an authentic personality fit..but I guess that's the dichotomy between immediacy and timelessness. When playing my own stuff, I sweat the credibility and the 'journey.' This, in contrast, was just for fun. - DJ Shadow

As Metrik he'd already released on labels like Viper, Spearhead and Shogun Audio before he signed exclusively with Hospital Records but since then he's further underlined those early shades of promise with his self titled debut EP on the label and worldwide tours. It’s getting harder and harder to bemoan Kasra’s Critical imprint of most anything. This latest mere 25 minute mix from his label signing, Emperor is a real case in point. Being so short there’s very little let up but the fact is it’s probably rammed full of a ton of new productions and it’s got a very evident meticulous nature to it. Emperor doesn’t try and cloud the product with ideas above its station, the mix’s rowdy, almost call and response like nature surmises the way a whole bunch of people play out, constantly pushing the crowd on and on into more of a fever. And consequently, as a teaser for the next Critical Sound night, it’s the perfect thing to epitomize the type of energy and devotion their crowd provides.

Regular sparring partners in clubs the world over, DRS’ trademark measured Mancuian flow rides perfectly atop on Intalex’s soulful selection with his baritone delivery sitting sweetly and filling out the dynamic range of the rolling selections which reportedly feature, in some form, material from DRS’ forthcoming second album, Mid Mic Crisis.

Lenzman's success as a Drum & Bass producer should come as no surprise, his sound having coalesced from Hiphop and an infatuation with Soul music to become one of the forerunners in liquid soul. In 2010 Lenzman's talent as an artist came to a head when he released 'Open Page' with Riya on Goldie's seminal Metalheadz label, a vocal collaboration that would continue to be a much-loved aspect of his sound. 

Lenzman's eclectic style was championed as a breath of fresh air for the scene and his career began to snowball. He has played headline gigs and festivals across the world earning respect from some of the greatest names in Drum & Bass, including Marcus Intalex and DJ Friction. 2013 promises even bigger things as he gears up to unveil his debut full-length release. Watch out for Lenzman's album 'Looking At The Stars', which will drop later this year on Metalheadz.
