Sanctus, My Little Friend
Dedicated to the Holy Spirit who graciously answered my prayer to send a dove companion.

The inspiration for my “Sanctus” poem began on 10 May 2008, Saturday morning, 9:41 a.m., the Vigil to the Solemnity of Pentecost. A dove arrived near my home. I named my new visitor, “Sanctus” and we cooed together from a distance. A delight! At first, Sanctus is lodged in a nearby deodar cedar tree. As time goes on, my little friend comes closer. One bright day, upon opening my front door, Sanctus is seated on my white balcony railing. After two years, Sanctus did not return and a new dove arrived. Sanctus had a distinctive cooing and to this day I miss my little friend, wondering if (s)he had passed away or traveled to a new destination. Each subsequent year a dove returns on or near the same date. I coo again but the connection is not the same as with my dear Sanctus.

My Sanctus chant~song is composed and sung by me in my 2015 recording at Olivet Gardens of Cypress Lawn, Colma, CA. The live dove sounds field recording is made by Mark Head and me in 2017. Sanctus was posted on SoundCloud on June 4, 2017, the Feast of Pentecost. The Nagra recording device clearly captured the doves cooings and flutterings. I am very grateful to Mark, whose long hours of arduous editing were truly invaluable.

Thank you to Elizabeth Young, the founder of the Palomacy non-profit in the San Francisco Bay Area which saves domestic (unreleasable) birds who would otherwise be eliminated. Elizabeth referred me to Dale Miller and her two daughters, Paloma Gifford and Vivia Gifford. To tie the Synchronicity and Connectivity of God even further, Paloma is a female name, derived from Latin “palumbus” which means ringdove, a symbol of peace. The name also can be associated with a white dove and The Holy Spirit. This caring family fosters nine ring-necked doves. These doves are now adopted and living in loving “forever” homes.

The eight doves heard in the “Sanctus” recordings are Cathy, Peaches, Dewey, Bailey, Rooster, Flitwick, Theo, and Liberty (Libby, who is blind). On the morning of our phone call to arrange our meeting, one of the original nine doves, Autumn, passed away. We remember their beloved dove and Cathy (his mate).

On the Feast of the Epiphany, January 4, 2009, I had the great pleasure to be present while the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Kühn Choir of Prague recorded Trilogy of Hope which comprises of three songs. Originally to be an ERMMedia 2010 album, the President and Conductor passed away, and the recording company closed.

PARMA Recordings was referred to me to continue the above project. Trilogy of Hope was accepted by PARMA. 

Years went by. A new PARMA Recordings Agreement as of August 2024! Trilogy of Hope opus will, at long last, be fulfilled! Elated and grateful that PARMA Recordings, a Grammy award-winning company, will produce the album.  Sanctus, is to be the Prelude song to Trilogy of Hope.

The recording for Sanctus took place at Studio Martínek in Prague on March 11, 2025. What a delight to work with the Kühn Choir of Prague once again, choirmaster Jakub Pilka, and the sessions music producer extraordinaire, Jan Košulič. 

And now, for the Most Important White Dove of all, the Holy Spirit.

May this song be more than music.
May it be a light, a prayer, a homecoming.
For in every flutter of wings, in every whispers “tu,”
we are reminded: we are never without You.
All Glory, Honor, and Praise to the Holy Spirit ~
the Eternal Dove, who sings through us,
