With the worst of the pandemic in the rear-view mirror, Danish virtuoso DJ Tool can finally get back to IRL raves, and championing a signature brand of techno that blurs the gulf between the heady days of 90s trance and present. This is his second round for the Bassiani podcast series, a high voltage return to his Copenhagen roots. They’ve fully grown: quicksilver rhythms that have to be seen (and felt) in the flesh, though this one’s a glimpse of that magic at home. Giorgi Kancheli is a Georgian producer and resident DJ at Bassiani who has been crucial in shaping the country’s club culture. Growing up in the dark and crumbling Tbilisi, in the 90’s, has greatly influenced his musical identity.
Kancheli’s professional relationship with music began with percussion and at the age of 17 he was already playing at the Tbilisi jazz festival. Soon after that, he got into electronic music and has now been an active DJ for over 15 years. In early 2010, Kancheli and his friends started the project ‘Stare at DJ’, which quickly became the main event of the country’s evolving club scene. Today, Kancheli is one of the most popular DJs in his hometown Tbilisi, headlining many major festivals in Georgia and performing at the industry’s most respected venues such as Berghain, Robert Johnson, Shelter, Dimensions or CTM Festival. Besides spinning the decks, Giorgi also writes and produces his own music. In spring 2020 his debut solo EP “Earthshaketrance” got released on Bassiani Records. Kancheli also co-runs the label Shin Records - a label focused on emerging Georgian producers

For the 40th edition of the Fast Forward Audio Series we present to you - NEWA

Coming from the jazz scene (and being a classically trained musician) Ana Kublashvili chose the artist name Newa when she progressed into the electronic music field. Newa started out as a DJ in 2012 in her hometown of Tbilisi, Georgia, quickly making a name for herself around in the city’s famous nightlife spots. She is a regular at the world-renowned Bassiani venue, a space that has given her a foundation to establish her skills on an international scale. Newa is also a recurring favourite at Ben Klock’s touring event-series Photon.

When it comes to Newa’s own productions it is a direct transition from her sound as a DJ; she represents a nuanced artist, building her musical presence on technical skill and honest feelings. Her authenticity extends into the studio. What you discover when listening to her work is a producer who expertly manages to measure all elements; deep bass lines and sunken melodies coexist in harmony. Whether the end result is techno or an experimental ambient piece, she manages to create music resonating with depth and reflection. Subspiele Records debuted Newa’s first own productions in 2012, since then she has gone on to release records on fine labels such as Klockworks, Semantica and the Bassiani in-house label. Since 2016 she also co-runs the diverse Icontrax imprint; here the focus lies on presenting undiscovered local talent from the flourishing Georgian techno scene.
