Start Rocked

If you get a chance, check out "Runaway Train" by Boy George/Culture Club featuring Gladys Knight: it's terrific (but not available in full on SC). Anyhoo... the usual noisy start, courtesy of The Vacant Lots (shades of Joy Division and The Cure?), then some brooding rock from Lightning Bug (which reminds me of The Smoke Fairies... whatever happened to them?). That's it as far as alt/indie/rock goes, so the baton passes to Rothwell for some Dance Pop (which is a genre, apparently)... anyway, she's got a terrific voice. After that it's more dance and less pop as we shuffle through electronic (Elder Island, plus Macius), hip hop/rap (Triple Redd), Disco (Izo Fitzroy), funk/disco/house? (Steven A. Clark) before heading for home with some Jazz and Blues (Hackney Colliery Band featuring the legendary Mulatu Astatke). It's then left to Elma Orkestra and Ryan Vail to close things out with a sprawling mostly ambient piece that goes all runaway train in the middle. Pick of the week goes to Rothwell's "Quarter Life Crisis" which just edges out The Vacant Lots' "Bells" and Elma Orkestra and Ryan Vail's "Arrival".

Leaving Records presents Swan’s Chamber, the latest idiosyncratic statement of musical purpose from Georgia based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Taylor Ross. Listeners may know Ross from his two prior releases on Leaving as Surface to Air Missive. Where those records were DIY gems of staunchly progressive indie rock, Swan’s Chamber conjures a world of stately manors, baroque architecture and full southern gothic immersion. Heavy on classical guitar, recorder, and piano, Swan’s Chamber is a picaresque set of southern classical compositions. The swan is a fitting mascot for this album’s elegant and graceful instrumentals. 

Incepted by Ross while in Berlin on a tour of Europe in 2016, Swan’s Chamber is a conscious shift from rock to classical. Its complex pieces showcase a vibrantly creative mind working at a high level. The album’s striking cover image, a photo of an abandoned yet majestic antebellum mansion, distinctively embodies the music. From the elegant medieval barbs of opening track “Swan One (of the South),” to the heart rending chords of the closing title track, Swan’s Chamber is a cohesive slab of sumptuous beauty. The album’s two sides are split up by winding centerpiece “Swan’s Ghost,” a serpentine, enigmatic slow burner of haunting classical blues. Full of living history and first rate musicianship, Swan's Chamber makes a stunning impression.

Whereas the band’s debut album ‘Popular Music’ was broadly political, the new album takes a more personal approach with beguilingly honest and brave lyrics that are bold in both sound and feeling, whilst also retaining the core DNA of their previous material.

Going on to speak about the album Mez says “A Picture of Good Health is not a collage of work but rather a snapshot of time; our time and the time of those around us. It’s political, but in a personal way. It’s a body of work that explores and examines the band's inner-selves through a precise period; a period that has brought pain, loneliness, blood, guts, single parenthood, depression and the need for survival and love.
