Oh my

Dutch composer Rutger Hoedemaekers makes his debut solo release with a stunning album that marks the culmination of a decade spent in the hyper-creative studio environment he co-founded in Berlin, including four years working closely alongside Jóhann Jóhannsson. Sonically rich, emotionally deep, and immaculately handled, 'The Age Of Oddities’ showcases a brilliant new talent, its cinematic eloquence bearing witness to Rutger’s experiences composing for film alongside Oscar-winner Hildur Guðnadóttir and Jóhannsson, for whom the album is partly a eulogy.

Whilst paying homage to Jóhannsson, ‘The Age Of Oddities’ sees Hoedemaekers forging his own sound and vision. It’s a bold and forward-thinking record, with a rich, hybrid sound seeing vocals processed and blurred alongside brass parts and a wall of strings shadowed by Rutger’s understated, textural electronics. Beautifully scored, immaculately performed and recorded, the album utilises the power of Budapest Art Orchestra’s 23-piece string ensemble conducted and co-orchestrated by Viktor Orri Árnason, alongside vocals (Kira Kira, Theatre of Voices’ Else Torp and Laura Jansen), horn (Morris Kliphuis), trombone (Hilary Jeffery) and violin (Una Sveinbjarnardóttir and Viktor Orri Árnason), with Hoedemaekers contributing trumpet, piano, keyboard and electronics.

Born out of a shared creative environment during a time of personal as well as social change, ‘The Age Of Oddities’ is a powerful and emotive work that closes a deeply productive yet also dark and heavy period for its creator. It sees Hoedemaekers finally stepping out into the spotlight after many years working behind the scenes, revealing a hugely talented new composer who is surely one to watch in coming years.

Sometimes things just turn out different... I was expecting 3 or 4 indie/alternative rockers in this list, but there you go... Favourite track is Francisco Sonur's exquisite "Morning Trials... Hazel", with Social Haul's rowdy "Wet Eyes" a close and *very* contrasting second.

House Music unfolds as one long piece, a recorded-then-sculpted improvisation that vastly expands their work, coalescing classical and electronic instrumentation in the creation of genre-defying musical worlds.

After having shared the short film IX: Nature That’s It That’s All. — which layered archival visuals of blissed-out crowds at a carnival over one of the later, dreamier sections of House Music — Bell Orchestre presents a video for the one-track album’s most anthemic and explosive segment, V: Movement, directed by band-member Kaveh Nabatian.

In the album’s liner notes, the group recalls countless moments when, in kinetic moments of improvisation, “a nuanced piece of music would emerge organically, completely formed, without any plan or discussion or rational thought” — and then be lost because it wasn’t recorded. In conceiving a new album, they decided to celebrate the spontaneous and accidental, to centrally situate the act of collaborative, democratic creation in their finished work. With the legacies of improvisation-exploring greats like Talk Talk, The Orb, Bitches Brew-era Miles Davis and the late Ennio Morricone in mind, on House Music, Bell Orchestre captures the impulsive, connective, mysterious poetics of musical invention happening in real-time.

Partnering up with FatCat and fronted by TRAAMS’ Leigh Padley, the group’s first offering provides a firm indication of what to expect from the new project, with its potent lyricism, sprawling vocals and relentless riffage demonstrating their electrifying potential amidst a rip-roaring wall of noise.

Detailing their upcoming release, Padley explained: “‘Wet Eyes’ was inspired by an overheard conversation in the pub. The fellas were riffing on the inherent obsolescence of all human skill and the inevitable deterioration of their individual dreams. They concluded that it was in fact quite liberating to be but a cog in a machine and seemed to recognise their fortune in this understanding, all the while haphazardly navigating their flippant political leanings and the football scores. They had a good night I think, I thought it was quite nice”.

Circulo de Arena is the third and final single from Kaleema’s forthcoming Útera LP. Underneath Kaleema’s beautiful crooning, pulsating and drifting synths are cushioned by bewitching rhythms that transport you into a serene soundscape. Misty melodies call to mind a mystical sunset over a distant ocean beach. Roughly meaning ‘sand circle’, Circulo de Arena is an invitation into a moment of serene introspection, saturated by nostalgia and longing. 

Kaleema is Heidi Lewandowski - a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, and singer from Buenos Aires who’s planted herself deeply in the potent Latin American electronic scene.

She released her debut album Nomada in 2017, receiving an array of critical acclaim for how she seamlessly and hypnotically weaves together contemporary electronic elements and tradition Latin American instrumentals. Since the release of the album, she’s been catapulted onto renowned stages such as MUTEK Montreal, Lollapalooza Chile among others and has collaborated with artists such as Chancha Via Circuito, Mateo Kingman, Lido Pimienta, and many more. 

Circulo de Arena is the third single from Útera (2021), Kaleema’s sophomore studio album forthcoming on Wonderwheel Recordings.

Cellist/composer Clarice Jensen starts the new year with a brand new release, in the form of a digital EP of a first ever film score. Directed by Takeshi Fukunaga, ‘Ainu Mosir’ is a beautiful coming-of-age tale set in an indigenous village in Northern Japan, where a community‘s livelihood depends on preserving and performing ancient traditions for visiting tourists. 

The soundtrack was performed on cello and electronics and also sees Clarice expanding her ouevre into works for piano. The material comprises her first feature film comission, since which Clarice has worked on three more, and so marks the beginning of working in a medium in which she is hoping to grow.

Ainu Mosir’ is released on DSPs on January 29th.
The film has been distributed in North America and is available to watch on Netflix.

We got the Freerange boss in to remix the classic Sunburst Band track ‘He Is’. The mighty Jimpster has turned in a rich & sublime mix that truly deserves to be called Deep House. Warm Rhodes licks twinkle over deep kicks, dubbed-out guitars and hazy echoes. The whole track is drenched in Jimpster's deft touch as a producer and we think this is one of his best remixes. A Heavenly rework you might say.

Dave Lee has also loaded his classic version into the mixing desk for a brand new remaster.
