The Durian Brothers - FatCat Records podcast #85

Singer, violinist and composer Apollo has compiled a podcast made up of 12 pop songs featuring stunning and original string arrangements. The string ensemble has been deployed throughout the history of pop and rock to denote and evoke emotion, often melancholy or euphoria, or both. On these tracks, the strings are not always the main focus, but they are integral to each song's sound world, emotive qualities, colour and flavour. The songs range from arch baroque pop to acoustic post-classical singer-songwriter fare, to introspective hip hop, to retro-nu-soul to avant-garde orchestral projects to angry feminist rock to pure pop.

Suite Strings Compiled By Apollo - FatCat Records podcast #86

Lee Grainge started his journey into music in the early 80's – 
listening to soul and funk and the emerging electro scene he became fascinated with the electronic sounds 
that were being used to produce these types of genre. Following a near tragic car accident Lee found inspiration in this and chose to become a DJ, 
at first it was for fun, DJ-ing in pubs and bars in his local area of Walthamstow he soon became to realise he had the skills to further this. 

Around the acid house era Lee decided to ‘live’ his passion for music and sound and got a job as Import buyer/seller for a distribution company.  
A year or so after this with much success selling prime dance music to all the independents in the UK he left and went to work for the Fat Cat record shop.
Lee also went on to release many 12? singles under many pseudonyms for a variety of UK Techno labels. Lee also became a prominent DJ in the UK 
and on the international stage. Human records was Lee's last venture into Techno music, 
although short lived as a label of only two releases the music is highly regarded as timeless and inspirational to many who collected them.


In 1999 Lee worked at Smallfish records, where he helped shape the beginnings of the shop. After two years he left to concentrate on another obsession, sound in films. He studied Sound Design and Music Technology for two years at the London Institute, after which he went on to create collaborative installations using picture and sound to create feedbacks, with a highlight being shown at the Pompidou, Paris. Since these days Lee has been freelancing as a sound recordist & post production FX editor.

In the past year Lee has started to collaborate musically again. Although he won't let on with who yet, after a 10 year break from music he has become interested in his field of dance music.



Lee has always believed in sound and music being about passion over anything else. He has created this podcast of a selection of film sound and music to create something he regards as one piece rather than the 30 or so different sound tracks and sound bytes actually used in this.

Our latest podcast comes from Josh LaRue of Breakaway Records (and formerly of Mice Parade). 

"Breakaway just celebrated its 5 year anniversary this summer, 
and we look forward to many more years of digging up the best 45s, LPs, turntables & other audio gear for our customers. 

Breakaway was started by Austin native Gabe Vaughn (aka Secondliner), 
and was originally located in east Austin. Gabe hosts / DJs Austin's amazing R&B nite 'Second Sunday Sock Hop' 
as well as the long-running Funk & Soul party known as 'Soul Happening!'

The shop has been on North Loop, in north-central Austin, for 3 years now and business has been steadily growing. 
Denton, Texas native, longtime DC resident, and Mice Parade alumnus Josh LaRue (aka jLa) came on board 2 1/2 years ago and he and Gabe have been slingin' records and gear, DJ'ing, putting on events, making mixes, and generally helping provide Austin with good music on vinyl ever since! 

Josh holds down several regular DJ gigs in Austin, including a couple at the fabulous Hotel San Jose, and runs Soul Happening! along with Gabe. When in Austin, come check us out!! Mix CDs available by mail-order.

A Garage Psych Mix - FatCat Records Podcast #94

The solo project of Cats Purring member R Cole Furrow, Dead Gaze’s recent, self-titled debut for Palmist was both moderately unhinged and totally tune-stuffed; harking back brilliantly to the barely-evolved psych and post punk sounds of the Flying Nun label. On this mix Furrow put together exclusively for The Fly, he shows a crate-digger’s love for all things underground, taking in world music sounds (The Meditations‘ harmony-rich reggae, Super Mazembe‘s Kenyan soukus) eccentric figures both past (The Feelies, Tall Dwarfs’ Chris Knox) and present (Julian Lynch) as well as some incongruously smooth pop from Hall & Oates and Steve Winwood. Drink it up! It’ll put hairs on your chest.
