Fly By Night Invites - 1020 Radio

As Typeless steps into its fourth release, label head Aloka turns eyes and ears to the horizon with a shapeshifting drop of breakbeat, electro and ambient. Fusing together textural arrangements and genre hybrids, he sets his sights on experimentation with ‘Inta’.

The opening track ‘Inta’ moves with a dreamy, indirect gaze and wistful melodies as though sighing itself into existence. Amongst it all sits a subtle beat which carries it into the dancefloor realm, yet it’s when they apex together that its weight blooms from the core. ‘B4
XL’ begins almost as an ensuing chapter to its predecessor with its ambient washes, but soon ripens into an antagonistic electro number that tumbles between raging synths and breaks.
On the B-side, ‘Chroma’ diffracts into a million colours, glassy eyed in its introduction but hiding tyrannica kicks and syncopations underneath a swooping bass. The closing track‘Movement’ slinks straight into a workout-ready guise, merging panting exhalations, pearly synths and choppy breakbeats against the sensation of a spectral figure reaching a deep state of flow.

With this second self-release on the label, it’s as though Aloka is so deeply immersed in his complex vision that he’s stepped out of his body to watch it all unfold. There’s one word to describe this image of him in his effortless performance as both label curator and signee:

It was a race against time, whoever made it to the finish line first would make it out alive — the same couldn't be said for the rest. The journey had been treacherous and many had been left behind, leaving only the most determined and strong-minded to find their way there in one piece. Competition had pitted them against one another, friendships had been severed, relationships ruined; now it was every man for themselves. 

With a catalogue that already boasts releases for Scuffed Records, Time Is Now Records and Mask Music, London's Fiesta Soundsystem is now bringing his rhythmic, bass-heavy workouts to Lauren Chalmers and Paul Patterson's Of Paradise imprint. Across the four tracks on ‘Not To Be' Fiesta Soundsystem gives us another taste of the sounds he's become synonymous with: slick, futuristic jungle and eerie DnB with plenty of bass to boot.

For their final show of 2021, Fly By Night Invite Glasgow's finest H3L3NA for an energetic power hour. With heavy bass & break influences she blames on growing up in the North West outside of Manchester, H3L3NA later in life moved to Glasgow which encouraged her to experiment with harder, darker cuts including electro, hardcore and techno. After killing her set for us at the Hare & Hounds in November, we had to get her involved in our Invites series.

For the March edition of our 1020 Residency, we welcomed Not Bad For A Girl's DaiSu, who's track 'Talk To Me' featured on our recent Departure V/A. DaiSu became involved in the Manchester music scene in 2018 after originally moving up from Bristol to study, and has since featured on stations such as Project Radio, Threads*, 1020 Radio and Melodic Distraction, as well as playing on line ups for Keep Hush, Loose Lips and Redbull.
