This is my first Csound recording using a MIDI controller -- an Akai EWI4000s wind controller. The EWI gives me intuitive access to lots of continuous controllers, and I've tried to use these extensively here.

The basic EWI tone is made with simple FM synthesis. Usually the modulating frequency is equal to the carrier frequency, but this is changed by two thumb plate controllers: the thumb down controller makes the modulating frequency dip smoothly by a very small amount to get inharmonic spectra which produce beat frequencies, and the thumb up controller makes the modulating frequency jump in integer multiples of the carrier frequency, up to 8 times the carrier frequency.

The breath controls the volume, but this is tied to the modulation index so that as a sound gets louder its sidebands also become more prominent. This relationship is nonlinear so that the modulation index changes are subtle at lower volumes, but are pronounced when the sound is loud.

The MIDI pitch bend signal is controlled by biting the mouthpiece. After experimenting with other things I could use this to control, I finally settled on ... pitch bend.

I used a lever which controls and on/off MIDI controller to switch between two just scales, doubling the number of notes I can play precisely in each octave.

There are two delays on the EWI sound, one for each stereo channel. These are not echoes, as the delayed signal is not fed back -- each repeats only once. The ostinato string figure which I programmed into my Csound file as accompaniment matches the timing of the delays.

Sorry about the bits of static sound in this file; I'm still trying to figure out how to record effectively. This recording was done using pulseaudio to route the Csound output into Audacity -- jack should work better, but I it's harder to get working.
