Reach out. The “Plumes” story continues with my second ambient excursion: “Synthesize You” 🫳

This track is focused on the idea of being in good company, yet missing the people you really wish were there with you. I got the idea for it during a hangout with a couple of my classmates in LA’s Little Tokyo last year. They were very kind and it was great to spend time with them, but I was consumed by an overwhelming sense of longing for the people I cared deeply about back in Austin. I am back with them now, but this piece has been interestingly taking on new meaning in just the past week, in which we celebrated our graduations. There’s a real kind of dread associated with the fact that we might never be together in this context ever again, and although we never really lose the people we love, we can’t help but associate our relationships with this current place and time.

When I made “Synthesize You” near the end of last year, I created it with the wish of having my people with me while I was a thousand miles away. Now I’m wishing that, wherever they might go off to now that our lives are moving in new directions, I could just bring them back in any instant. This all sounds very bleak, but I think there’s something so beautiful about how much these things mean to us. We hold on to those we care about, and our memories with them, for dear life, and it hurts to part with the things associated with them, but there’s a good reason why we get so emotional about it all. Life goes on, paths change, and all you can do is breathe it all in slowly, as magnificently frustrating as it can be.

I had a lot of fun with the melodic elements of this tune. I did some experimentation with generative synthesis, and I’ve held on to the droning pad progressions that have made me fall in love with ambient music historically. I also drew upon the recent explosion of sine wave-based “dark” ambient for inspiration; this was a sound that was very present in my everyday listening habits during my semester in LA.
