As a current participant at the Recurse Center in NYC, I’ve had the pleasure of exploring new forms of composition, most specifically in the Python programming language. At first I was focused on writing my library of compositional tools that work with MIDI data, though I was soon introduced to the idea of data sonification through another “recurser”, Edith Viau (MTL), who explores the subject through her Financialist project. Edith seemed to be the only other person at RC exploring the subject already and we soon formed the Data Sonification Group at RC thereafter.
Sonifications of Price consists of two compositions written in Python, mapped to the prices of Bitcoin and Gold, respectively. “Bitcoin” represents the price everyday from 2010-2021 and “Gold” represents the price each month since 1950.
Large and invisible forces run our modern world and often they can feel exceptionally abstract, and even scary within the context of our lives. This work is an attempt to demystify their scale and convey a translation of power.

Hard Insect listening

Before the Tul prayer begins, it is customary to give free rein to violence, shouts, loud and tense music, worshippers letting themselves go and objects being shattered.

This precipitates a particular psychological state that could be likened to deep relaxation: the opening of the inner listening.

The sermon that follows, different each time, revolves around the articulation of apparent contradictions in a style similar to our Taoism. Thus, in the recording we offer you, the first aphorism recites:  

"Supreme peace appears as violence".

This part of the celebration is traditionally accompanied by complex rhythmic music. Each worshipper is invited to dance to the rhythm they perceive, slow for some, fast for others, the whole swirl being considered as supreme harmony, everyone's part of the same ensemble but in a way that is unique to each individual.

Edited Arts is launching Serotonin, the second in a new series of charity fundraising compilations.

Serotonin features contributions by some long-lasting friends and new found collaborators ; Dane Law, DIDA, dj celes, Eye Measure, FARWARMTH, Felisha Ledesma, Georgie McVicar, hogobogobogo, IVVVO, KMRU, Lauren Duffus, Lenticloud, Monofee, mu tate, Nexcyia, onybdy, Shit Creek, SPECIMENS and 空蟬(Cicada Shell)

Cherubic voices, sparkling drums, and drones on their way back home from an all-nighter set the scene for this compilation. 19 artists have made sonic references to the hormone that acts to regulate our wellbeing. This is the second release from a series that is musically themed on psycho-sensory states of happiness, or the lack thereof.

Profits from this release will go to the Black Cultural Archives and Raw Music Media. 2 Brixton based organisations / charities.

Felisha Ledesma - In A Bow

“Bedlam of Salt” marks the fourth full-length album by Xuri (formerly known as Yuri), a product of the desire to connect and collaborate in a year of absence. From pulsing club ready tracks to contemplative arrangements, Xuri displays her signature sound of playful industrial in a new shared exploration, featuring the dramatic vocals of Lueurs Nocturnes, along with cellist Oliver Vaupel and drummer Hasse Bruun. The listener is transported to a gallery of chimeric illusion, always moving between confinement and release. Travelling through a number of contrasting soundscapes, the album forms an intriguing kaleidoscope of emotive states in a time of disruption.

From the repetitious trance-inducing opening ‘Datura, Luciferin’s Trumpet’ to the high intensity club-fitting anthemic ‘Kali’s Dance’ and the uneasy but tender landing of ‘A Scene of Calx’, the album provides a steady journey into the multifarious unknown, agitating and engaging in an encompassing and dramatic movement.

For the past few years Xuri has made note of herself as one of the clearest new voices in the Copenhagen experimental scene, known for her playful style as well as her techno output as Parietal Eye (out on Mama Snake’s Amniote Editions label) and various collaborations with Internazionale. This latest outing sees her venturing even further into a collaborative space.
