A collaborative composition by Clara de Asís and Rebecca Lane deriving from a series of encounters and explorations throughout different times, spaces and forms.

Distances Bending is an ever-expand­ing pro­cess — a build­ing up, dis­tilling, and mir­ror­ing of mater­i­als par­tic­u­lar to each artist, respond­ing to and inhab­it­ing a space over mul­tiple hours or days. A repeated time struc­ture, a tem­por­al loop that is altered through upwardly evolving ration­ally-tuned fre­quen­cies, vari­ous flutes (whose size, timbre and shape cor­res­pond to these fre­quen­cies), elec­tron­ics, and chan­ging light, the piece cre­ates a subtle space where per­cep­tion is transformed.

During the night close to a pound in the small community of Lavaderos (Desert of San Luis Potosi, Mexico), some toads and frogs are singing, happy to had some rain during the day.... after a few months very dry.

Toads and frogs during the night in the desert (San Luis Potosi, Mexico)

Some strange sounds from the Australian rainforest! The unique calls of Wompoo Fruit Doves, Spotted Catbirds and the sharp 'whipcracks' of Eastern Whipbirds make for an unusual soundscape. Recorded in Girringun National Park in far north Queensland. 

Other bird species heard on this track include Yellow-breasted Boatbill, Superb Fruit Dove, Grey-headed Robin & Lewin's Honeyeater.

This is the first time I played broken beat music at an open dance floor. 

Almost a year ago at Burning Man I’ve suddenly opened up to broken beat dance music at Opulent Temple performances by Seven Lions, Keith MacKenzie, Dulce Vita, others. It makes me feel so alive. I feel it subdues my mind, brings me totally to here and now, and just makes my body move. It’s literally impossible to just listen to this music - it screams dance! 

So I wanted to share this. But on the other hand, it was very different to what my people and the festival crowd like and I thought expected. And I have a nice set of other music which they would love. For me it was a choice between doing something I felt genuine for me, and doing something great for others. I usually choose the latter. 

But at this time, I’ve chose to play the music I love, even though it was divergent. And it turned out to be a great dance for everyone.

Félix Blume is a sound artist and sound engineer. 
His work is focused on listening, it invites us to live sonic experiences that enable a different perception of the surrounding. He uses sound as a basic material in sound pieces, videos, actions and installations. His process is often collaborative, working with communities, using public space as the context within which he explores and presents his works. He is interested in myths and their contemporary interpretation, in human dialogues both with inhabited natural and urban contexts, in what voices can tell beyond words.
