Sound art Playlist

A windmill in the desert of Arizona is screaming while the wind is coming. Those windmills are used to pump water, in order to give water to cattle or wild animals for hunting. The groaning is produced naturally by the central mast on a piece of wood (part of the windmill).

Recorded during a scouting for an upcoming sound art project in Arizona (to be done in 2022).

All sounds in Free Field Recordings playlist are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY 3.0) meaning you are free to share, copy, remix or otherwise transform the sounds for commercial or non-commercial use on the condition that you give appropriate credit where the sound is used.

Hello from Ubud, 
In this soundscape, I give you an authentic feeling how the walking street at Jalan Gootama at evening sounds like. 
In the beginning, it was a little difficult to find the right spot to get a nice clean outdoor restaurant sounds but after I walked up and down the road I found a hidden spot between two big walls. In front of the alley a perfect situated restaurant. 
I turned the recorder on and could capture some really fun sounds. You will listen to a little cricket somewhere around me what creates this nice evening vibe. 
Several motorbikes passing by and pedestrian walking by. 
From the restaurant or cafe itself, you have a lot of walla, laughing and people chatting sounds in different languages. This creates a really cool mix of sounds. 
The waiters and guests moving plates around and you can hear the sound of the cutlery being placed too. 
I think we have some really cool sounds recorded! Enjoy

returning | reeds was created for the return walk along the Humber Bridge as part of the Height of the Reeds event during the City of Culture year in Hull, 2017 - a ticketed event that had to be extended twice and saw 10,000 people participate over the course of 2 months.
This piece uses only the unprocessed recordings of located sound collected over 6 months on and around the bridge in preparation for the project.
 
The Height of the Reeds was a collaborative ten part, triggered headphone installation on the bridge, commissioned by Hull CoC 2017 and Opera North. (also now available as an album). Someway into the process I was asked to compose an additional work for the return walk. My connection to place is based on durational listening and recording, often using unconventional microphones and devices. For this piece I have tried to convey some elements of this connection to a series of locations that I have known since they were built and their surroundings.
recordings include various elements of the bridge structure and internal spaces, reed beds and ponds along the banks of the river humber, and traffic along the bridge. many of the recordings used JrF c-series contact microphones, JrF d-series hydrophones and DPA omni microphones.
this release also includes two bonus tracks not included in either ‘returning | reeds’ or ‘Height of the Reeds’. unedited / unprocessed recordings of the main bridge cables and one of the metal ladders into the anchor space on the north bank.

Natalia and myself were amongst several artists invited to take part.
Natalia set up an installation of objects activated by piezo elements and speakers in a small, open space below a house in the back streets of the town.
I was invited to record the installation and join in with some of the explorative performances.
Natalia Borrisova lives and works in Germany, though in recent years has turned away from an active arts practice.
