Wonderwheel Recordings is proud to present the debut EP & a remix 12" for new signing Alsarah & The Nubatones. Called “The New Star Of Nubian Pop” by The Guardian, the album was produced solely by Alsarah who describes the sound of Silt as “East African Retro Pop” - it’s music that harkens back to the hazy sounds of 1960s and 70s Nubian music with its haunting instrumentation, soaring vocal melodies, and pentatonic arrangements. 

The original song “Soukura” with is a small taste of her upcoming album Silt (out on 3/11) and gets a signature deep and entrancing Ancestral Soul remix by African house legend Boddhi Satva . Perennial Wonderwheel favorite The Spy From Cairo gives "Nuba Noutou" a dubby dancehall re-rub, and label head Nickodemus takes "Rennat" into late night house territory with his remix, letting only the slightest of vocals come through and build tension until the final moments of the tune. 

Alsarah, is a Sudanese born singer, songwriter and ethnomusicologist. Born in the capital city of Khartoum, where she spent the first 8 years of her life, she relocated to Taez, Yemen with her family to escape the ever stifling regime in her native country. She abruptly moved to the US in 1994, when a brief civil war broke out in Yemen. Now residing in Brooklyn, NY, she is a self-proclaimed practitioner of East-African retro-pop. Working on various projects, she most recently has been working with The Nile Project and was featured on their debut release, Aswan (named 1 of the Top 5 “Must Hear” international albums by NPR). She has also collaborated with French producer Débruit on the album Aljwal, released this past November via Soundway Records UK.

20 years in Everything But The Girl, 10 years with Buzzin' Fly, now Ben Watt returns on guitar with the title-track from his brand new solo album 'Hendra', accompanied by friend, album-collaborator and ex-Suede guitarist, Bernard Butler. The album - his first for thirty-one years, produced by Ewan Pearson - is out on April 14 (except North America, Apr 29). It also features a rare cameo appearance from Pink Floyd's David Gilmour.

Another reclamation project.  I'm guessing this one was from about 1993 and restoring it presented more difficulties than usual since each section seemed to have it's own problems.  I was able to salvage it but I think I might have even had a little divine intervention to help me fix one part.  This is from my film scoring days and is third in the spy-music trilogy.   It depicts espionage at an airport.

The Talkhouse Podcast recently headed out to the fantastic Desert Daze festival at Moreno Beach at Lake Perris in Southern California. When we weren't catching sets by Tame Impala, King Gizzard, and My Bloody Valentine, we recorded a trio of great talks; this week, we present the first.

When I saw that both Steve Albini and Devo's Jerry Casale were going to be at Desert Daze giving talks, I knew we had to pair these two icons of alternative music. They're big fans of each other's work, and halfway through their conversation, Steve said, “This is the sort of stuff no one ever talks about. These are the questions I’ve had for 30 years.”

Their fascinating talk takes in the beginning years of Devo’s existence; their complex relationship with Neil Young; Brian Eno’s proclivity for ménage à trois; the differences between poker and making records; and how the name Devo became a category alongside jocks, squares and nerds.
