Recording from when I hosted Queer Theory Reading Group convened by Zoe Bastin at Blindside ARI in Melbourne, Australia, including phone calls with Gabriella, Nelly and Oriane and recordings of the Seimens Nexas trains. We read the first of Freud's Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality, titled The Sexual Abberations - easy to find as a PDF on Google. The thumbnail includes a photo of Lili Elbe, the first woman to recieve sexual reassignment surgery, placed next to Freud's famous portrait.

MC Yallah / @user-724951916 on Hibotep: A walking, breathing example of the diversity of Kampala's arts and cultural scene, Hibo Elmi is, amongst other things, a filmmaker, fashion designer and installation artist. A self-described cultural nomad, her one rule is that rules are there for breaking. A philosophy that extends to her DJ sets where trap, hip hop, house are combined with taraab, gnawa and other Arabic influences to collide into a vibrant contemporary sonic collage.

Ashley Woodward on Hibotep: I’ve been lucky enough to see Hibotep play rooftops, festivals, bars, clubs, backyards - and it’s always a sonic adventure. One night in Kampala before a gig, I was hanging at Hibo’s whilst she prepared for the upcoming set. You could hear the excitement building from within as Hibo filled her bag with a collection of music ‘totally new and different’ to what she had performed recently. I could probably have been forgiven for wondering why there was a need for change when those recent gigs had gone so well, but that’s not Hibo’s style. A passion for underground artists, a champion of sounds from diverse communities, a commitment to freedom of self expression and to challenge oneself creatively is what I would consider authentically Hibotep. And so it was - another amazing journey of moods, music and rhythms had the club swinging, and for myself a reminder from Hibo to keep an open mind, keep searching and keep listening.
