Piece 4 of 9.  These pieces were all created using a UPIC - (Unite Polyagogique Informatique du CEMAMu) A UPIC allows you to "draw" your music - the sound waves, the envelopes, the timbres, and how all those things fit together. The sound wave in this piece is from the sound of a breaking glass.

Recent song I made based off of what I heard in a dream. It was about going to see a movie in which two women fell in love while living and working with the Dogon tribe in the western Sahara, in the Mali/Burkina Faso regions. They're really interesting people because they are the only known culture that still speaks what is thought to be the dialect of ancient Egypt. They also know some hieroglyphs found in the Egyptian pyramids (and elsewhere) that are contentious to translate into European semantics. So the dream had a very mystical atmosphere of uncertainty and magic: there's the breathtaking history of the Dogon, the vibe my subconscious mind thinks the Sahara would have, and the love affair between two women within cultures where such a tryst may be dangerous. At the end of the film (not yet the end of my dream), there was this closing scene where the two women were alone and holding hands, looking out at the vast dunes during the middle of the night. The stars lit up the sand in a marked way; there was conveyance of a warm nighttime breeze as the score that had been meandering in and out of the movie was played in full as the credits started rolling.

Dogon Dream

I used 4 samples from what Adlez contributed to the sound bank. I experimented with shifting the frequency of the samples then layering them and stretching them out. The results are interesting and atmospheric. There is no other instrumentation accompanying it.

I’ve been keeping my Disquiet Junto compositions sparce because I plan to use them as components for a larger composition I am working on. More info on that soon.

The Assignment: Make music from 100+ vocal samples of held syllables by members of the Disquiet Junto.

Step 1: Welcome to a large, asynchronous, distributed choir. The Dischoir consists of 113 samples of held syllables by over 50 participants in the Disquiet Junto. You can access the files at the following URL. Note that a few of them deviate from the initial instructions 3:

Step 2: Create a piece of choral music from the provided samples. You are encouraged to make music that feels “human,” that feels like it is simply a lot of people singing at once. However, of course, the end result is up to you; you can and should mix, mash, and create as you please.

Background: This all came about as a result of something Alan Bland mentioned on the Junto Slack. He pointed out that my having misspelled Disquiet as “Disquier” in the December 19, 2019, project title made him think of “Dischoir,” a possible Junto project. Thanks to Alan and to Jason Wehmhoener for helping me think this project through, and to everyone (over 50 contributors) who sent in samples.
