My one and only love

This work wouldn't count as "12-tone music" even though it is based on an extraordinary tone row recently discovered by the composer.  And it also wouldn't count as "tonal" even though it unabashedly deploys some triadic harmonies.  And it's also not one of those pieces that pushes to the boundary of atonality or, though primarily atonal, flirts with suggestions of root progressions.  

To explain: there are about half-a-billion 12-tone rows total, and still about  10 million when you count only up to the usual transformations.  But this row

enjoys a unique, 1-in-10,000,000 property.  Consider the ten internal 3-note sequences 
[ 0 3 1 ], [ 3 1 9 ], [ 1 9 2 ], [ 9 2 8 ], [ 2 8 10 ],  [ 8 10 11 ], [ 10 11 6 ], [ 11 6 5 ], [ 6 5 4 ],[ 5 4 7 ].   They all turn out mutually
so different each-to-each that you can't mistake one sequence for a transposition of another even if some or all of the notes get nudged up or down a semitone!  So that means, in principle, the listener can know where she is inside the row even with only dodgy relative pitch!

Multiply by 7 and semitones turn into 5ths.  So instead of using the original row to control pitches, this piece uses the related row [ 0 9 7 3 2 8 10  5 6 11 4 1 ] roughly speaking, to control key centers.  Since this new row stands to the cycle-of-fifths as the original one does the chromatic scale, now instead of inflecting up or down a semitone,  you get to replace any chord note with its dominant or subdominant.   The result: no collision between the 10 3-chord progressions can occur, no matter what the substitutions. 

The hidden skeleton of this work comprises four statements of the second row (but overlapping, and with the middle two transposed). Thus one may think of the work as 40 variations, each exploring one of the 3-chord sequences, but with constant substitution as described above.  Each variation consists of 15 phrases (for no particular reason).  But the phrases move from low to high,  making them easy to count off when you first try to follow the structure.  Eventually your ear will just "get it" and after a few listens you'll find you don't need to count to hear the harmonic changes that distinguish each variation from the next.

"O Μπαχ:

- Ηταν βαθιά θρήσκος και χρυσός άνθρωπος, αλλά και πολύ μυστήριο τρένο, ιδίως σε θέματα μουσικής. Στο Arnstadt μιά μέρα αρπάχτηκε στην κεντρική αγορά με ένα μαθητή του επειδή του ζήτησε τον λόγο γιατί o Μπαχ υποτιμούσε τις ικανότητες του στο φαγκότο. Κουβέντα στην κουβέντα, ο μαθητής τον αποκάλεσε "βρωμόσκυλο" και του έδωσε μία με το μπαστούνι του - ο Μπαχ τότε έσυρε το ξίφος του και ευτυχώς, μπήκαν στη μέση οι ψυχραιμότεροι. Η συμπλοκή έφτασε ως τις δικαστικές αρχές της πόλης, που ωστόσο έδωσαν δίκιο στο μαθητή, αφού ο Μπαχ είχε πρώτος προσβάλλει τον νεαρό, λέγοντας του πως κάνει το φαγκότο να ακούγεται "σαν κατσίκα". 
- Κατόπιν αυτού, ο Μπαχ σηκώθηκε κι έφυγε από την πόλη, χωρίς άδεια από την επισκοπή που τον εργοδοτούσε, και περπάτησε ολόκληρα τα 230 μίλια ως το Lübeck, άκουσε τον περίφημο Μπούξτεχούντε να παίζει το όργανο, και έπειτα περπάτησε άλλα 230 μίλια πίσω. Το πήγαινε-έλα άνευ αδείας διήρκεσε τέσσερις μήνες. 
- Μια μέρα, ενώ ο Μπαχ διηύθυνε στο ναό του Αγίου Θωμά μία δική του σύνθεση, ο οργανίστας Γκέρνερ έπαιξε μία λάθος νότα. Ο Μπαχ σταμάτησε αναψοκοκκινισμένος, έβγαλε την περούκα του και την πέταξε στο κεφάλι του μουσικού φωνάζοντας "θα'πρεπε να'χεις γίνει παπουτσής!"
- Ηταν τόσο εμμονικός με την τελειότητα της αρμονίας, που λένε πως όταν δεν μπορούσε να πετύχει τον τέλειο συνδυασμό με τα δύο χέρια πάνω στο κλαβιέ, έβαζε ένα ξύλο στο στόμα και πατούσε έτσι τις νότες που έλειπαν.
- Η μουσική του δεν έγινε ποτέ δημοφιλής όσο ο Μπαχ ήταν εν ζωή, και γιά σχεδόν ένα αιώνα θεωρείτο πως οι γιοί του ήταν πολύ πιό σημαντικοί συνθέτες από αυτόν, αν και του αναγνωριζόταν η βιρτουοζιτέ στο όργανο. Σε πολλούς η μουσική του Μπαχ πατρός φαινόταν υπερβολικά παλιομοδίτικη (παρ΄ότι ήταν κατά βάση πολύ μπροστά από την εποχή του), εκκεντρική, επιτηδευμένη και ηθελημένα περίπλοκη, ενώ αρκετοί στα εκκλησιαστικά συμβούλια των ναών που εργαζόταν τον κατηγορούσαν πως έπαιζε υπερβολικά πολλά πράγματα, και γιά πάρα πολλή ώρα. Σε αυτούς τους τελευταίους ο Μπαχ απαντούσε στην επόμενη ευκαιρία, παίζοντας μόνο λίγες νότες και σταματώντας. Τότε αναγκάζονταν - οι ίδιοι - να του ζητήσουν να παίξει κι άλλο.
- Μία φορά, από μία γειτονική πόλη του ζήτησαν να επιθεωρήσει το καινούριο όργανο μίας εκκλησίας. Κανόνισαν ημέρα και ώρα, και ο Μπαχ εμφανίστηκε ακριβής στη συμφωνημένη ώρα, αλλά τέσσερις μήνες μετά το ραντεβού. 
- Δεν απέκτησε ποτέ προσωπική περιουσία, εκτός από λίγα μουσικά όργανα.
- Εκανε 20 παιδιά με 2 γυναίκες, εκ των οποίων η πρώτη ήταν ξαδέλφη του. Εφτασαν στην ενηλικίωση τα 10. Από τους 6 γιούς, οι 5 έγιναν επαγγελματίες μουσικοί και συνθέτες.
- Η μουσική του ξεχάστηκε παντελώς μετά τον θάνατο του, ανασύρθηκε όμως από την λήθη θριαμβευτικά σχεδόν 80 χρόνια αργότερα, όταν ο ανερχόμενος Φέλιξ Μέντελσον, τότε 19 ετών, παρουσίασε "Τα Κατά Ματθαίον Πάθη" στο Βερολίνο του 1829, το κοινό της εποχής έμεινε με το στόμα ανοιχτό, και η λατρεία γιά τον Μπαχ επίσημα ξεκίνησε."Piano

Η Σφήνα (The Wedge)

This a performance of WAKA, a new Paragon commission from the composer, John Maxwell Geddes.  This performance was given on 6 June 2011 at Glasgow University as part of the West End Festival 2011. 
Waka (literally Japanese poem) is a genre of Japanese poetry, which through time, came to mean “short poem" in which rhymes - even accidental rhymes were considered a fault. Instead , the form uses the unit and the phrase; these I employ as isolated image and succinct commentary. The work consists of one movement lasting about eight minutes. The opening thirty seconds represent the “short poem" where isolated images are  presented by  flute and bassoon.   These units become lines and phrases, and the remainder of the work is a commentary on these ideas. JMG
