The sounds used in the piece are pre-processed by using various techniques such as granular synthesis, subtractive synthesis, harmonizers, pitch-shifters, sound-resynthesis etc.
The structure of the piece changes perpetually. It begins with structural character where one sound triggers an event of series of other sounds. Slowly those trigger sounds turn into rhythmic, punctual elements which is accompanied by the new and previous material which gradually becomes a harmonious aspect. This harmonious concept disintegrates into noises from previous sections however they become the main material and will end it piece alone.
The piece is written in 6 channel surround system, where the diffusion of sounds in the space an important role for the relations of sonic events. They emphasize the cause and effect relations of the sound structures. In order to keep this spatialization concept for stereo listening, a binaural technique is used for mimicking the surround sound while listening with headphones.

There is a great tradition of music inspired or based on nature and its phenomena. I believe that, from a certain point of view, my music is part of this tradition.

The word Komorebi, as far as I know, has no translation in any language other than Japanese, although the "light becoming visible" phenomenon is well known. The contrast between sunlight and shadow, and the way the two dance together, is a vision that artists of all types and eras try to capture: the interplay of light and darkness. 

But my intention here is not to represent or describe the phenomenon; much less make it a metaphor. The intention in my music is to translate the sensation of seeing the light that passes softly through the leaves and branches of a forest, thus becoming visible. I work with sound layers, delicate musical elements that float and cross more concrete, solid forces, calling attention to the smoothness. What we must listen to is the most quiet, the most fragile.

Harmonies, textures, and fragments of melodies, each in their own way, create layers of sound that come from the background to the foreground, requiring our attentive listening. Sometimes these layers return to a secondary position. Sometimes they disappear and become an exhalation. 

In this way, the music creates a flow of more or less concrete elements, suggesting the atmosphere of a forest pierced by soft light.

Making of – intimacy beschäftigt sich mit der Normierung der intimen Erfahrung, lässt sie als Klangformen in ihrer Vorgeformtheit und Schablonisierung durchsichtig werden. Zugleich arbeitet das Stück an der Spezifikation der Klangformen und -strukturen durch kompositorische Transformationen und unternimmt den Versuch, die normierten Empfindungen, die mit den überkommenen und zumeist ungefragt übernommenen Klanggestalten einhergehen, aufzulösen und durch eine gehobene, ins „genau-Jetzt-so-seiende“ Präsenz zu überführen.
Thematisiert werden die in klangliche Erscheinungen transformierten Erfahrungen unseres intimen Erlebens, Erfahrungen, die wir alle kennen, die jede und jeder von uns für sich selbst als „die Besonderen“ erlebt haben wird. Deren Formen und Erleben sind aber kulturell geprägt. Unsere Wahrnehmung und unser Erleben sind geprägt durch die Welt, in der wir leben: Wir lernen zu hören und das Gehörte entsprechend den geltenden Konventionen zu erleben. Die kompositorische Arbeit an der Vorgeformtheit unseres Erlebens bietet die Möglichkeit, eine einzigartige, unwiederbringliche intime Klang-Erfahrung zu kreieren. Klang-Erfahrungen, die sich einer Schubladisierung verweigern und sich nicht sofort einordnen lassen; deren Erfahrung uns selbst wiederum intim werden lässt, indem wir „nackt“ vor ihnen sind und sie als solche hören.
Als eine kompositorisch grundlegend veränderte Form des Erlebens von (ehemals vorgefertigten) Klang- und Erlebnisschablonen, in und durch grundlegend veränderte Kontextualisierungen kann dann die Erfahrung diese Klangstrukturen spezifisch und einzigartig werden lassen. Dieser Organismus, der durch das Stück, die Musiker*innen, die Zuhörer*innen und den Raum gebildet werden wird, lässt – so die Intention – die Grenzen des Erlebens durchlässig(er) werden und ermöglicht hoffentlich Erfahrungen jenseits der Norm.

Christian Winther Christensen -       Prelude in D-flat Major

The second piece in the "AUSSEN" (outside) series and was commissioned by Noise-Bridge (http://christiefinn.com/noise-bridge). Soprano and clarinet are its base setup, but there are various technical (metronomes, computers, radios, different audio playing devices) and natural objects (branches, water, sand)used. The score consists of eleven fragments which can be played optionally, repeated, performed in a row, etc. In this specific rendering, the duo chose to perform everything from 1 to 11. The spoken (and sometimes: the sung) text is an overlay from text written by me, by the singer and, to a lesser degree, by the clarinetist (which results in a different outcome for each performance). In this happy coincidence here, Christie Finn turned out to be a poet herself! Enjoy!
