Wonderwheel Recordings is proud to present a new single from recent signing Tremor, a Buenos Aires based trio that combine rhythms and sounds across South American genre borders with digital vibes and electronic music culture into a sound that has been dubbed “Digital Folklorico” by NPR. Here on their debut single, “Huella” is a mystical affair rooted in the Andes with soaring vocals from singer Micaela Chaque, pounding drums, dubby synth squelches and deep echoing bass. Remixes come from Mexico City’s Frikstailers who turn “Huella” into a dancefloor friendly chugging four to the floor dub “steppers” remix, and Folklorico wunderkind Chancha Via Circuto who ups the mysticism of the original with his understaded, nearly ambient refix on the tune. Also included is the instrumental and a bonus cut that will not be on the album, “Tarkas”.

La Piragua es un standard de la cumbia latinoamericana, un pedazo de historia de la música tropical y se ha mantenido como una joya del folclore y la fiesta a nivel mundial. Es así como viaja hasta las tierras bajas de Holanda, donde se reconstruye con aires de dub y música de raíz en las manos de la banda Umoja.

Regional trae de vuelta esta pieza de arte a su región de origen, pasando en su camino por Francia donde Rafael Aragon la transforma en un swing house. Bigote en España rescata la cumbia dub digital, Tribilin Sound de Perú la lleva al sonido stepper, Ale Cassis le agrega beats futuristas desde Bolivia y La Reco Ganjah experimenta con un dembow espacial en Chile.

Todas conservando el sabor original de La Piragua de siempre, pero llevandola al siguiente nivel.

La Piragua is a latinamerican cumbia standard, a piece of history in tropical music and it has been delivered as a gem of the folklore and party worldwide. This way it travels all the way to the low land of Holland, where it gets reconstructed with touches of dub and roots music in the hands of the band Umoja.

Regional brings back this work of art to its origins, stopping on the way in France where Rafael Aragon transforms it to a swing house, Bigote in Spain recovers the cumbia in dub, Tribilin Sound from Peru takes it to the stepper sound, Ale Cassis adds some future beats from Bolivia and La Reco Ganjah experiments with spacial dembow in Chile.   

All of them conserve the original La Piragua flavour of always, but taking it to the next level.

Pedro Canale crosses the mountains from Buenos Aires to bring us a new live set. With years of experience this artist develops his musical craftsmanship at the hands of Argentinian folklorist, Miriam Garcia, who bases her vocal work in the cultivation of ancestral compilations. Together with percussionist Feberico Estevez and violinist Heidi Lewandowski they recover lost songs of the valleys and hills of Argentina, making new sounds fall in love with ancient music of the earth and its roots.

Pedro Canale cruza también la cordillera para traernos desde Buenos Aires un nuevo live. Este artista, con años de trayectoria, desarrolla su artesanía musical de la mano de Miriam García, coplera argentina, que basa su trabajo vocal en el cultivo de recolecciones ancestrales. Junto al percusionista Federico Estévez y a la violinista Heidi Lewandowski, recuperarán el canto anónimo de los valles y los montes de la Argentina, re encantando a nuevos oídos con música antigua de la tierra y las raíces.

Chancha Via Circuito Mixtape 018 - Festival Nomade

In 2010 Todd Burns wrote a review for RA about a record called ‘Rio Arriba’ - even now I distinctly remember seeing the beautiful & striking cover art of Paula Duro and being drawn in by the foreign titles and imagery. I needed to hear this record. However it was only available in Argentina at the time and Burns' challenge to readers to figure out a way to listen only piqued my intrigue. 

I worked out a way and within the very first 30 second of that record, the jarring percussion of ‘Cumbion de las Aves', I knew I had found something special. And it is a special record, but more than that, for me this record marked a shift in the way I approached sourcing new listening material from then on, opening up a new musical culture and a desire to cast the net further afield. It truly changed the way I listen to music.

I am therefore honoured and humbled to present our latest contributor, the incredible talent of Pedro Canale, aka Chancha Via Circuito. On his glorious Métron Musik Mixtape he has compiled a collection of tracks that are extremely special to him, showing his influences to extend far beyond the mountains of his native Buenos Airies. There are some surprising selections along the way but it never strays too far from an emotional and sonic core that feels very much aligned to the Argentine producers aesthetics. 

‘Amansara’, his latest LP and third full length for the fantastic Argentine label ZZK Records, was one of my favourite records of 2015. The much anticipated follow up to 'Rio Arriba’ develops Chancha’s now signature sound and takes it to new heights. His collaboration with the amazing Lido Pimiento on ‘Jardines’ is one of my all time favourite tracks and an absolute triumph of creativity. I highly recommend exploring the Chancha Via Circuito discography from top to bottom.

It's also a real pleasure to introduce the artwork of Léto Mythia who designed the artwork for our 15th mixtape.

Mysterious avant-garde musician Hekla will release her uniquely beautiful debut album for solo theremin and voice Á, out September 14th through Phantom Limb Records - an independent label run and curated by former FatCat Records, Thrill Jockey and Royal Albert Hall execs James Vella, Ken Li and Mark Pearse.

A Berlin-residing Icelander, Hekla’s sparse, delicate, fractal music exists within these two worlds: dark and magical as Iceland’s permanight folklore; and (though beatless) as deeply sonic and intense as Berlin’s electronic scene. A long-term scholar of solo theremin, Hekla (shortened from her own name Hekla Magnúsdóttir) uses her instrument as an otherworldly and highly evocative Siren-call. A spectral, wailing, howling, lamenting yearning second-voice that underpins a soft vocal delivery... as if her studio had been haunted with a chorus of ghostly backing singers.

Las cosas toman su tiempo en madurar, aunque a veces ese tiempo se nos escape. Seis años después del fallecimiento de Leda Valladares, y a casi dos de haber lanzado la convocatoria, Fertil Discos (Argentina) y Folcore (Barcelona) presentamos el primer adelanto de lo que será El Camino de Leda, un repaso por el cancionero que la gran música popular rescató del olvido, y que gana otra vida a partir de 12 temas grabados por una nueva generación de productores electrónicos y cantantes invitados. 

En este caso, Chancha Vía Circuito, un productor que ya se ha destacado en el uso de la copla y el canto con caja en la música electrónica, genera una atmósfera simple y poderosa, que la voz de Shaman Herrera llena con un canto que parece ser el de muchas personas o el de muchos tiempos a la vez. Siguiendo la idea general del proyecto, el tema no modifica las pautas formales de la canción recopilada por Leda, sino que las refuerza con una base musical tan densa como espaciosa, que incluye también a la caja, el elemento central del ritmo, y guía del canto.

El Camino de Leda continuará próximamente con el siguiente single, realizado por Tremor y Soema Montenegro, y el disco final, a editarse a principios de 2019, en digital y vinilo, contará con la participación de El Remolón, Bárbara Silva, King Coya, Sofía Viola, San Ignacio, Lauphan, Pol Nada, Jin Yerei, Dat García, Jazmín Ezquivel, Barda, Celeste, Uji y Charo Bogarín (La Charo) de Tonolec. 

CHANCHA VIA CIRCUITO es un músico y productor bonaerense, que vincula en sus trabajos la música electrónica y las raíces latinoamericanas, presentándose en todo el mundo y obteniendo un gran reconocimiento tanto en el país como en el exterior.

SHAMAN HERRERA es un cantautor nacido en Comodoro Rivadavia, ahora radicado en La Plata. Es el líder de Shaman y los Pilares de la Creación, y ha participado como guitarrista, cantante y productor en numerosos proyectos vinculados al rock, el folk y otros estilos.

'Arka was composed with Esteban Valdivia, musician, composer and neighbor. His tremendous work keeping Andean music alive, through his own interpretation, has been a great inspiration for me this year. He converges with my contemporary music ideas in which experimentation, harmonic clashes and dissonance are key factors. Performing under altered states of consciousness (or seeking them out through performance) helps create a clear connection between the terrestrial and the transcendental, delivering the body as a means at the service of the music. Arka alludes to fire, a dual ritual that represents once again the practice of the ‘siku’, a dialogue between the ‘Ira’ and the ‘Arka’, two parts that make up the same musical instrument.'
