Heavy Swing

Fetherstone’s breakout single, ‘Don’t Look Back’ becomes the starting point for her new style of storytelling, detailing the struggle of the artist, and the seemingly endless waiting game for the next opportunity to come along. Produced in collaboration with London native Harry Tarlton (Signed to Kobalt Music Group, Chi), the upbeat, 80s synth-infused track showcases her new electronic direction, while putting her delicate yet powerhouse vocals front and centre.

'Don't Look Back' is the precursor to Fetherstone's debut EP. The EP is due to be released March 2017 (one track a month) and will be a collection of her stories, laying the platform for a series of future releases pulling inspiration from friends, family, and people she hasn’t even met yet.

Don't Look Back

Following her break-out single ‘Don’t Look Back’ released in November 2016, Fetherstone, in collaboration with London-based Kobalt Music-signed producer Harry Tarlton, presents ‘Setting My Soul Free’, the first instalment of her self-titled 4-track EP. Under the guise of Fetherstone, her new electronic-pop-folk infused persona, Australian songstress Briana Cowlishaw brings the tradition of the troubadour storyteller into the modern electronic pop genre through her innate passion for storytelling, with this new release reflecting on the vulnerability of falling in love, and accepting oneself enough to be able to be loved in return.

Cowlishaw explains her raw and open approach to her songwriting as ‘…the only way I can write music. When I accept my vulnerability and allow myself to be completely honest with my lyrics, I can stop trying to create and the creation just happens on it’s own. It’s not always easy, though, to stand strong and look at your weakness face on.’

Setting My Soul Free

Fetherstone, in collaboration with London-based Kobalt Music-signed producer Harry Tarlton, presents 'Nicole'’, the second  instalment of her self-titled 4-track EP. Under the guise of Fetherstone, her new electronic-pop-folk infused persona, Australian songstress Briana Cowlishaw brings the tradition of the troubadour storyteller into the modern electronic pop genre through her innate passion for storytelling. 

Nicole is the persona that Cowlishaw wishes she could be, wishes she could give in to, the night owl. Where there is so much peace and no longer the overwhelming pressure to succeed, why wouldn't you succumb to the temptation?

The single will be out on the 5th of May, 2017, on all the usual platforms.

A note from Briana...

All You Need to Be is one of the most honest and raw songs I've ever written and reminds me WHY I make music.  It came from one of those dark moments that swallow you whole and then spit you out the other side. We all spend so much time justifying who we are, why and if we are important in the world, but most importantly if who we are is ENOUGH, for other people and for ourselves. I would never question my best friends and beautiful family for all their crazy, imperfect quirks that make them unique and hilarious, but I don’t make that exception for myself and continue to dangerously critic myself. . . . 

I wrote this song in about an hour, completely balling my eyes out, so hurt from my own self destruction and ready to heal. I feel like these lyrics that came out were aimed both at myself but also to all the beautiful people in my life who I want to remind how epically awesome they are.

The single was featured on the Richer Unsigned August 2017 Highlights playlist, which was then later hand picked by Newton Faulkner to feature on the Richer Unsigned record store day vinyl compilation, April 2018. 


A note from Briana.... 

Often as artists we think we need to go the road alone, tough it out and struggle to make things work on our own, because we should be capable, right? In this fight to be strong enough, good enough, noticed, credited as an artist, I often find myself lonely, doubting my art and it's validity. 

This song is about letting that go and celebrating collaboration. Letting people in to bounce off, create with and feel like you are part of something bigger than yourself. This track is intended to capture what it feels like that moment you let go - a feeling of release, weight lifted from your shoulders, excitement, playfulness ... and potentially a little party dance to celebrate!

01 - Annique - 01 Push It Away

Fetherstone releases “Ticket to You” the first single of her Unspoken Stories series, collaborating with artists and musicians to interpret strangers stories.
 
Unspoken Stories will see Fetherstone travelling to different cities around the world, searching for stories from friends and strangers. She will team up with songwriters, producers and artists of other mediums to bring those stories to life, record and release them, and then travel back to the city where the story came from to perform the song.
 
The first single “Ticket To You” is a story from a 9 year old girl in London, Nikita Charles, about visiting the Jimi Hendrix museum. Nikita's original words, describing Jimi Hendrix’s room and how it made her feel, were workshopped by Fetherstone and fellow songwriters Henry Mitton & Alex Gillespie. The song reflects the absurdity of paying to visit a dead famous persons old home when it might be as plain jane as yours and mine. The track was produced with London based engineer and composer Luke Brooking (aka Brew) over the past 6 months, a real labour of love from Fetherstone. 
 
Try your best to compare the song to another artist or genre, but nothing quite fits. Part jazz, part pop, part electronic, this is just the first of a very interesting series of music to come. The Berlin story is next on the way.  
 
The single is due out Friday 30th November 2018 with a single launch on 3rd December at The Fiddler’s Elbow, Camden. The launch show will explore storytelling through a live vocal painting, a Nashville style songwriter round, an exhibition of Lee Kay-Barry oil on canvas paintings and a set from Fetherstone to close the night. Commenting on the track, Stewart says: “I wrote it on an extremely hot summer’s day in my very small sweaty music room at my house in Sydney. All I wanted to do was be at the beach having refreshingly cold things (like ice cream...) but I was too hot to do anything about it.”

Fetherstone combines jazz, pop, folk and electronica to showcase a very personal, modern expression of her luscious songwriting and sublime vocals. Working as a seasoned jazz vocalist and composer in Australia since 2009, Briana Cowlishaw moved to the UK in 2015 where she started a new musical adventure; Fetherstone. The project is named after Bri’s grandmother (Edith Featherstone/Cowlishaw), a renowned printmaker in Australia, and is what Bri channels all her creative energy through; songwriting, painting, performing and creative play. Fetherstone’s debut EP was produced by UK’s Harry Tarlton (Union J, WarnerUK), followed by 3 singles released between 2018 and 2020, and she is now about to release her first self produced body of work, "Full Turn", due out 1st June 2023.

The album "Full Turn" is a fusion of songs and interludes, capturing the essence and energy of the places where Fetherstone’s stories came from; the frantic streets of London to the quiet and serene bush in the Australian Blue Mountains. Ambitious at heart, Briana Cowlishaw started the journey of learning how to produce and mix her own music 3 years ago during the pandemic lockdown, which has allowed her music to tell raw and personal stories about her connection to nature, finding resilience through darkness, the bumpy and joyful road of being an artist and the cycles of death and rebirth. “Full Turn” was recorded, produced and mixed in a marriage of home studio setups between Sydney, Central Coast NSW and Berlin, alongside Berlin based Aussie singer and producer, Matilda Abraham.

Performances in Brighton, London, Sydney, Melbourne, Prague and Brno have seen Fetherstone utilise a 5 channel vocal loop pedal and beats machine to craft stunning vocal arrangements of her songs, as well as acapella arrangements of covers from her artistic role models, such as Madison Cunningham, Phoebe Bridges, Tom Misch, Lianne La Havas, Emily King, Bon Iver and Joni Mitchell.
