Decades ago, this one and three other pieces had been my very first attempt to record solo-guitar in a studio. I forgot about its existence, until I went in this studio again to digitalize all my magnetic tape recordings. I nearly cried, after we had put this very old tape in the machine. While playing it the second time, we could hear, how the soundquality got worse from second to second. The surface of the tape simply melted as a tribute to its very long time being forgotten.
So please consider the sound as some kind of "vintage".  ;-)

I always loved the sound of analog recordings on magnetic tapes, but they are definitely not suitable for a longtime archives. (I wasn't aware of this fact soon enough ...)

Well, with this track you chosed the probably most problematic one of my tracks ;-) As I wrote in my description, this recording was on a very old and longtime forgotten analog tape. In the attempt to restore this recording I struggled really hard to find the best compromise between noise reduction and the  avoidance of "overtone killing". And so did you, as I can hear. You set another priority, your noise reduction is much more effective and it sounds great, but comparing it with my own version I can not clearly decide, what I like more. Usually I prefer to accept a little bit of "ugly noise" than the loss of overtones, but here... not yet shure about it. Great work in any case !


Music of the so-called "Renaissance", originally composed for lute or vihuela (an early guitar-like instrument). Played and recorded long time ago without any ambitions for "historical correctness" on a fat modern guitar.

The String Quartet No. 16 in E flat major, K. 428/421b, was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This is the third of the Haydn Quartets, a set of six string quartets he wrote during his first few years in Vienna and later dedicated to Joseph Haydn.

It is in four movements:

I. Allegro non troppo
II. Andante con moto
III. Menuetto & Trio
IV. Allegro vivace

The first movement is highly chromatic, with the chromaticized bridge theme in the exposition being one of several examples, the end of the exposition being another.

The slow movement "invokes ... the slow movement of Haydn's Op. 20 No. 1. The ostentatious dissonances of its opening almost have an antique flavour, caused by the collision of semitonal ascents and descents, and this strongly suggests the opening subject of the first movement, so surprisingly isolated there."Other commentators hear it as pointing forward to Johannes Brahms.

Robert Johnson (ca 1580 - 1633/34) was an english composer and lutenist. His father John was lutenist at the court of Queen Elisabeth I.
Between 1610 and 1617 Robert Johnson composed for the "King's Men" theatrical company, providing music for William Shakespeare's plays. So he sometimes is called as "Shakespeare's Lutenist"

This "Fantasia" of the 16th century is composed for the vihuela (an ancient form of the guitar) by the spanish musician Alonso Mudarra. As its subtitle shows, Mudarra tried to imitate the special way, in which a famous harp player of his time used to play his instrument.
("Fantasía que contrahaze la harpa en la manera de Luduvico".)

Quite amusing are the annotations by Mudarra himself.
At the beginning of the Fantasia, he wrote "It is difficult until it is properly understood". And really funny but true, he set a foodnote in the middle :
"From here on to the end there are some false notes; but when played well they do not sound bad"
