“Senur” first chapter.

In 10th of February 2013 I recorded a concert with Amateur symphony orchestra. 
The program contained a wonderful melody “Senur” composed in four chapters by Sigurður Sævarsson. It was composed for string orchestra and obo. Both the orchestra and the soloist, Guðrún Másdóttir, played it flawless. 
I was pretty happy with the recording result, even though the concert hall (a church) sounded terrible for recording. It has a very harsh sound and difficult peaks in some resonance frequencies. 
Over the orchestra I used a Jecklin disk with a double pair of mics, parallel MKH8020 and MKH20 in 45°+45° (see following picture). 
Close to the soloist was a pair of MKH8040 and far behind in the hall was a pair of SE4400a with spaced Omni (70cm). 
 
Past months I have got a few emails where people ask me for a sound sample with my Jecklin disk. So this is it. Hereby is the first chapter of Senur. The only post work I do for this Soundcloud work out was turning off MKH8020 on the Jecklin disk and the SE4400a far behind in the hall. Then I increase the gain of MKH20 on the Jecklin disk about +8dB

"Senur" chapter one, with MKH20 on Jecklin disk

At midnight long, low, lazy Pig Frog grunts echo through a flooded cypress forest in the Big Cypress Preserve, Florida. Recorded July 2020 with matched pair Line Audio CM3 cardioids in NOS stereo & Sound Devices Mix-Pre3, 74 Db gain & no low cut filter.

In August 2020 there was a few days of some intense thunderstorms across the UK. On this particular day I put my microphone rig out under the cover of a large hedge outside my flat and recorded for several hours. For most of the recording the hedge was inhabited also by a robin, who sang softly throughout most of the storm. 

This is a short excerpt from that longer recording where I like the density of the rain, and where the song cuts through just enough. It was the middle of the day so you'll hear some traffic and other sounds of activity from where I live, at the edge of a city.

It was back in February 2012 that Michel contacted me to say he had sent me an mp3 "with a funny melody". "I am just wondering if you can play that. Exactly with the same tuning", he said. I had a listen and thought "You must be joking", as what I was presented with appeared to have no fixed notes nor conventional tuning, and sounded almost impossible to play. (I learnt later that the synthesized tune he had sent me was a melodic tracking - via software - of the musical pitches inherent in the voice of a man talking, recorded in Ghana by his friend Mark Dingemanse from the Radboud University). I put the strange sounding melody on repeat so that I could listen to it again and again, and by playing along continuously with it I eventually found the required notes on the trombone. After a week I could play the whole thing. And that was 2012. More recently, I found myself thinking, "Whatever happened to that tune". I had done a lot of work on it, and it seemed to have disappeared with no resulting composition appearing. So, I searched through my archives, found mine and Michel's original recordings, and played around with them until I had the beginnings of something coherent. At this point I contacted Michel, and he performed his usual magic, and eight years later we have our composition! Over the years Michel and I have occasionally swapped musical ideas, and our 'B-side' is the result of another such exchange, from a recording a year earlier. Red Rock Gorge Camp Ground in Sundown National Park, Queensland, beside the small dam at the Northern end, around midnight. Zoom F6, Rode NT55-MP with cardioid capsules, Rycote BBGs with wind jammers, ORTF. Three species of frog can be heard calling. I think they are: Striped Marsh Frog (Limnodynastes peronii, pok, ..., pok, ....), Smooth Toadlet (Uperoleia laevigata, creeek), and Eastern Dwarf Tree Frog (Litoria fallax, buzz like running a nail down a comb).
