Figure 46 featured Roman Poncet, making his debut on the label with a powerful collection of modern techno. Now its the turn on L.A based techno-powerhouse Truncate to remix each track, offering 4 inflammable tools for the floor.

Truncate is the alter ego of Californian producer Audio Injection a.k.a David Flores. Over the last few years his self release ‘Truncate’ label quickly became a quintessential modern techno standpoint. Now for fans of his pummeling, jacking and urgent sound, he turns his hands to Poncet’s recent EP, also likened by critics to the US producer’s trademark style.

What we find are 4 homogenous and very agile cuts. Each perfectly measured and controlled, their respective elements honour the originals, yet reduce them to their basic fundamentals. Providing some real treats for both techno, and house DJs alike, Truncate proves why he is one of the most in-demand producers around.

Following on from the summer’s mischievous double header, ‘Octopuss / Karter Bachnabel’ (Figure 47), the two techno institutions that are Len Faki and Johannes Heil are back. If ‘Volume I’ reflected an upbeat, festival-friendly summer vibe, then ‘Volume II’ welcomes us indoors to the winter season, with two darker, straighter and more paranoid weapons. 


Both ‘Dirty’ and ‘Maniac’ continue the strong blueprint of the first EP, with the producer’s trademark rolling bass and intense arrangements making them perfectly-honed for the big floors.

‘Dirty’ takes an old school, intense party-techno vibe with a grinding organ hook leading us into the heart of the beast. Taking the best of 90s techno’s slamming drums -crisp claps and searing hi-hats - combined with the two producer’s top class production, its quite a handful.

No less effective is ‘Maniac’, a more introspective workout that fuses a pumping, warehouse vibe with submerged, filtering synth play. At once psychedelic, yet funky and timeless, it snakes and stalks its way through 7 minutes of classy reductionism. Simply masterful techno from two of it’s key contributors.

Without need to mention his years of experience, Johannes Heil arrives on Figure SPC with two classy dub techno movements, each shimmering and snaking over 20 minutes. ‘The Spirit Molecule’ - that enigmatic substance thought to take our consciousness beyond mortality and back again… is explored in this collectable release. The vinyl comes packaged in a metallic gold sleeve.

Intricately dubbed and beautifully constructed, with earthy tape hiss creeping into the atmospheric, wash of reverb and delay, both sides are a real adventure for the head. At once meditative and reflective, melancholic and yet positive, they are luxuriously extended; laid out to finesse. 

Part 1 opens the sound field with classic dub stabs and subbed, low-end bass. Using a very reduced palette Heil hypnotises us and locks us in. Flip to Part 2 and the tempo is upped very slightly with a chugging, addictive weapon for the darker, more introspective dancefloors.

Continuing his prolific run of new material for the label, Johannes Heil continues to push forward with his 'Transitions' series, here collecting four more unique tracks for Volume 2.

Opening with the serene calm and Krautrock influenced 'Transition Five', a five minute piece that opens up a rich synth landscape full of space and texture, we then move onto the first of the EP's two full-spectrum Techno trips. Hotly tipped for the Summer as an essential Festival and Open Air 'moment, the powerful and optimistic energy behind 'Transition Six' is hard to ignore. That combined with Heil's extremely well sculpted and high-end production, the scene is set for madness to ensue… 

On the flip side we visit more paranoid zones with 'Transition Seven'. Building from a minimalistic stuttering rhythm, a soaring Sci-Fi soundtrack of strings and intricate synth patterns lift the tension, while dramatic sound effects crash and shimmer across the spectrum. 

This then prepares us for 'Transition Eight', in which we find Johannes working his refined club-sound into yet further directions and angles. At once hypnotising and dominating in its driving bass register and captivating arrangement, a highly charged minimalist club tool for 2014 awaits!

Continuing a prolific run this year on Figure, veteran German producer Johannes Heil launches a new alter-ego with 'Cryptik'. Combining his trademark darker techno explorations, with more positive, uplifting melodies, Cryptik offers a yet-unseen take on Heil's sound, always versatile, always breaking the mold. 

From thundering bass energy, a floating chord structure emerges in 'Source Code'. Underpinned by massive, solid drums, its ambient melodies create the perfect juxtaposition and a distinctive, curious creature is born.

Fully embracing broken-beat electro vibes, 'Back Door' takes us to an alternative dancefloor where sneaky dubbed-out fx and stirring emotional synths set a killer late night scene. Classic Detroit melodies meet the cold winter streets of Berlin in this rare example of Heil's alternative side.

'Phantoms' completes this first taste of the sound of Cryptik, in a cinematic interlude or 'incidental' piece, that represents purist techno just as well as the either of two beat-infused tracks. Its all in the mood, the atmosphere, and the textures. Cryptik = Techno Diversity!

Figure continues its new limited edition hybrid disc ' x.5 ' series with a special 2 track offering from Johannes Heil.

'Kykeon I' represents an unabashed, smiles-abound floor-filler with one of Heil's most joyful and accessible productions to date. A perfect heady cocktail of slamming 90s drums and uplifting house- stab melodies, the german producer has really struck a chord here with this future club-classic.

The spaced out stepping beats of 'Kykeon II' then, sit in welcome contrast to the all out madness of its bigger brother. Subtle, intelligent Techno formations rise and swell, based around a similar melodic framework to that found in part I.

Another masterclass from one of the most talented producers in the business.

Opening with the Vangelis inspired Present Voyage then weaving a path through gritty throbbing bass, exemplified by Arrival and on to minimized funk of Disco Diva and Need House, Sonic Intervention progresses naturally on through the swirling tension of Get Up and crescendos with the combination of floor-burner NZT and the old-school Electro stomping Electric Pandemic; featuring the vocals of Detroit Grand Pubas Paris Du Black Fu. When quizzed on his motivations behind his latest studio album, The Advent stated I wanted to do something quite personal for this first album and delve a little bit into the past to get inspiration from my influences to make an album that reflected all the musical genres I have been inspired by over the years electro, electronica, tech house - not just the techno tracks. Podcast 16 comes from HAWKINSON, a friend of ours and a regular dj at our club.
When Techno essentially would be a big tree with branches like Minimal or Electro style then Hawkinson would be the trunk of that tree. While others have jumped on the bandwagons that have come and gone, Hawkinson knew from the first day where he belonged - simply techno. His first inspirations came from the same sources as for most guys in the business too - Kraftwerk, Jean Michel Jarre, New Order, Depeche Mode and Front 242 or Nitzer Ebb. And he has remained true to his inspirations. 
Hawkinson also shows a deep respect for the DJ culture. "DJing was and still is composition for me. I have always loved taking on new challenges - to take two vinyls in my hand and create something new.'' 
Since 2001, he has played at various clubs in Berlin. And with his releases he displays the outcome of staying true to his passion. He knows what the crowd wants, what they need, and he knows where he belongs: to the trunk of the techno tree.
