Ninety minutes of superbly mixed deep house from a student of sound.

Releases from Benedikt Frey under his given name are a relatively new occurence, with the young German's production path commencing under the Suedmilch banner at the turn of the decade with an initial focus on a sound grounded in minimal and dub techno. As Frey's tastes and production chops matured, his output has gravitated towards a house shaped tempo, first under the name Venedikt Reyf and eventually under his proper name with releases on Ethereal Sound, Mule Musiq and Live At Robert Johnson.

Benedikt Frey's arrival on the latter label has coincided with a relocation to Frankfurt Am Maim where he's currently studying, and given the city's heritage the producer is well placed to further develop his interest in the deep house sound. Having debuted on LARJ last year with the well-judged Running In Circles 12", Frey's alliance with the label and club has continued with an appearance on their compilation Lifesaver as well as several DJ slots at Robert Johnson (most recently alongside Ben Klock) with further material promised.

There's a lack of online coverage out there on Benedikt's output to date that tallies up with his unassuming nature; corresponding with the producer for the purpose of this mix, we got the sense Frey prefers to let people discover his music for themselves. Hopefully Benedikt's hugely impressive mix of records old and new will encourage more people to investigate his own productions, be it his solo releases for the aforementioned high profile labels, or the material he has issued on his own Love Pain Sunshine & Rain label, or the collaborative work done with Locoto as v-to-the-d. After the dynamo sophomore release that was 2013's "Curiosities", New Zealand's Lord Echo returns to Brooklyn's Bastard Jazz label, this time producing Kiwi trio The Elder Statesman comprised of twin brothers and Wellington fixtures Christopher (piano) and Daniel (double bass) Yeabsley with Lord Echo himself on percussion and drums. 

On the "A" side, Montreux Sunrise is mellow meander through a laidback early 70s souljazz vibes, while "Trans Alpine Express" picks things up on the B side with a deep, spiritual piano groove, upfront doublebass, and Echo's percussion perfectly in the pocket. 

A timeless gem of a 7" from Bastard Jazz, releasing their own namesake for once!

In anticipation of the release of his debut full-length album Breakthrough, the Gaslamp Killer offers a taste of the ominous urgency that infiltrates his sound with “Flange Face / Seven Years of Bad Luck for Fun.”

“Flange Face (with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson)” rattles into being from a scratchy dissonance and soon descends into a distorted, doom-filled drama. Twisted with tension and hemmed in by a smack of solemn strings, the track operates on a frequency of pure horror. “Flange Face (Low End Theory Edit)” takes it to the club, a bass-heavy gut puncher stripped down to the beats.

With loose drums and a rash of razor-covered synths, “Seven Years of Bad Luck for Fun (with Dimlite)” unsettles into a bath of cold shudders. Inky shadows lurk just beneath the surface, dark reflections of the monsters that are strung between the beats.

Suggestively sinister, the Gaslamp Killer’s latest release is a glimpse of the artist’s contorted sonic landscape, a frightening world of chattering evil and chills that bite into the spine.

Magical Mystery Mix Part 1

Chopped Herring Records was founded back in 2001. The same year DJ Woody became the first European DJ to win the International Turntablist Federation World Championships. At that time Herring HQ was located in Manchester, a 40 minute drive through Lancashire to Woody's hometown of Burnley. Chopped Herring Records' owner Pro Celebrity Golf and Woody had crossed paths on numerous times spinnin' in Manchester and the North West of England during the 90's, so it only seems natural (like the migration of Herring in the Baltic Sea) that  C.H Recs and DJ Woody should 'hook up' for a mix at some point. 'Fly Fishing', a selection of released and unreleased tracks on Chopped Herring Records, mixed by DJ Woody is something we've been thinking about for some time. Since the Herring catalogue has grown dramatically in the last couple of years it seemed an appropriate time to get in touch with one of the greatest DJ's to ever do it to de-bone some Herring fillets in his inimitable, flavasome way. Chopped Herring Records and DJ Woody proudly present 'Fly Fishing'..

Sorry for the small hiatus in our mix series. We relocated HQ recently but now have something special for you ... One of Italy's best kept secrets is a club located in Brescia called Disco Volante. Well known by visiting DJs to have one of the best DJ booths in Europe (Bozak mixer with dedicated isolators on each channel is rare these days!), we thought it only right that Enio (one of the masterminds behind the club) presented one of our podcasts.  Please download and enjoy three hours(!) of personal music from the heart. Cosmic, afro, krautrock, soul, jazz and disco ... just don't ask us for a playlist!

I've been a music lover since day one! As a kid with my small turntable I used to listen endlessly to all the records in my brothers and sisters' collection. In the early 80's I started to go to some alternative clubs located in Northern Italy. I am talking about "Cosmic" and "Typhoon". There I heard djs playing all kinds of music, from Jazz to Disco, to Afro and Funk till the modern electronic music from the 70's and 80's. It was only at the end of the 80's / early 90's that I started to dig house music. But it was a slow process. I have never loved glamourous and fake clubs. I loved the stuff coming from Chicago and Detroit since I could immediately find my vibe and roots in it, even if I was born and raised in Italy. Since the 90's I have been a promoter and dj for many projects mainly in and around Brescia. Today I am one of the founders, djs, director and owners of DISCO VOLANTE, in Brescia. In my dj sets you can feel my deep love for black music. I love analog sounds and I LOVE VINYL.
