Ibibio Sound Machine are set to release their debut LP through Soundway Records. Fronted by British / Nigerian vocalist Eno Williams, they combine elements of West African highlife, disco, post-punk & psychedelic electro soul. Preceded by the pulsating first single 'Let's Dance', ‘Ibibio Sound Machine’ will be released 17th March.

Folk stories, recounted to Eno by her family as a child in her mother's South-Eastern Nigerian Ibibio language form the creative lyrical fabric of the album. A large dose of electronic elements and an approach as influenced by London as much as by West Africa, give the vocals and guitar lines space to breath without being overwhelmed.

From the banging sub-bass of 'Lets Dance' to the spiritual, gospel-tinged notes of the album's opening track 'Voice of the Bird', the band have turned in a dynamic and, at times, beautiful take on modern afro-soul music.

The 8-piece live band made their official live debut at this year's Transmusicales in France and will be a name to look out for in 2014.

Kompakt’s Michael Mayer goes a bit less organic and a bit more manic with a fierce, loopy and extremely psychedelic journey into the heart of darkness and back into the light with an outro that borrows from yet another album track Rainy Day. 

So Mayer basically remixed two songs in one. Dreems fed off that energy and outro’d that outro with a new edit of Rainy Day. Multi Culti not afraid to get multiple.

Drug-takers - approach this record with caution, it’ll suck you in and spit you out with your reality tunnel open a little wider than it was before… freaky.

From The Souljazz Orchestra: "Kossa Kossa" was inspired by late 70s/early 80s West African disco and boogie music.  "Kossa" was initially a type of Duala dance in  Cameroon, which later became "Makossa", the style popularized by Manu Dibango, but we really flipped the genre around and made it our own.  It's probably the Souljazz tune with the most "electronic" elements ever, since we used an old analog monosynth and a Roland 808 drum machine for the first time, along with our usual acoustic instruments."

From TIMEKODE: "For this song we really picked up the tempo a lot from the original to take it from the disco/boogie world and give it more of a house / broken-beat feeling.  We also brought the full palette of sampled and synthesized drums and bass to give the SJO a boom and rattle that only drum machines can provide. Leaning heavily on the original parts, this remix takes the song and the listener on a journey from a club in West Africa on a Saturday night circ. 1976, to an after-hours in the UK on Sunday morning circ. 2016, and back."

Clyde Stubblefield played drums for James Brown for 6 years but his legacy has lasted a lot longer than that. His rhythms have been extensively sampled and particularly his 'Funky Drummer' break helped lay the foundations of Hip Hop, and later jungle and a whole world of electronic music.

Flash Atkins is a super hero who had his gravy days in the 80s saving the world with his ability to manipulate sound.  Unfortunately he's fallen on hard times and can be spotted in the less salubrious parts of London, Manchester and West Yorkshire often stoned or drunk on borrowed money and time.

To make ends meet he uses his special powers to remix and make deep disco music for Paper Recordings.

Let’s hope it gets him back on track.
