Flash Atkins is a drunkard, drug user and general wrong’un. A super hero who has fallen from his purple patch in the 80s to purples stains on his pants in the 00s where he now lives in a campervan in a field in Yorkshire.

He is also the alter go of Paper Recordings’ Ben Davis and Levenshulme Orphanage For Boys is the first single from his forthcoming album Paper album “The Life and Times of Flash Atkins”. Each track title is named after a chapter of a short story to be published as an accompaniment to the long player.

Levenshulme Orphanage For Boys is a slo-mo tech heavy chugger that is locked down with rock sold beats and a throbbing side-chained bass. The track builds with synth lines before a sampled female vocal brings in some sparse melody and reinforces the hypnotic rhythm. An acid line adds to the tension before the reaching it’s peak with all the elements hitting home.

The Deaf Boys Dub goes down a more stripped back route with a Moog synth riff and techy hats along with the sampled vocal. A ricocheting snare heralds the arrival of the sub and things crank up a gear. It’s proper 4am lose yourself in the smoke club music as the synth riff filters in and out.

Doc L. Junior is a Norwegian legend who’s not been active for a few years but is back with a wallop. Deep, synthy and a hint of 80s, this is big room music that brings to mind So Get Up by Underground Sound of Lisbon.

Finally, Richard Seaborne turns in a classic sounding remix recalling Armand Van Helden in his prime. He ups the pace, adds a brutal bottom end, chucks in a jazz break on top of the acid and vocal and it’s dance floor dynamite.

Following the release of the “Eleccio” mix CD in 2014, Especial has continued on it’s path to develop and push a club sound that is slightly more leftfield than the on-going boompty House rehash, the mutation of nu-disco in to something a bit more proggy, trancey and the never ending thud-drug-chug of the 110 bpm ableton-for-beginners brigade, by offering a
mixture of musically psychedelic, twisted, dubbed-out, proto-obsessed club EPs.
Possibly falling between pillar and post, an audience does exist though and to celebrate that fact, a new mix CD - this time helmed by rising shipmates Khidja - is incoming. As before, “Junta” is a best of best from the previous 9 releases (EES011 - 019), plus a few special
extras from our Romanian duo. To accompany the CD release, a Sampler EP again focuses on some unreleased gems, unheard versions and a special remix.
We start with a remix from Khidja and their own take on the very special Masimbabele.  Upon hearing a Remix EP was in the works, the duo begged for a go and rightly so, as here is possibly the best remix, with a dubby groover. 

This is followed by an unreleased cut by another, but not forgotten, combo.  While C&A are M.I.A, here then is an extended rework of a stand out pop-ode taken from their underrated Migration album. 

On the flip is new member, Alphonse, taking his proto-rave-poem deep in to the echo chamber to create a unique dub that is very much for the smokers. 

Finally, Khidja offer the “original” version of Looki.  An ambient version appeared on the in early 2015, but here, finally, with kick, bass and some wiggle, is their balearic masterpiece.  Gracias Discos Especials !!

From his studio retreat in the heart of the Norwegian forest, Raaja Bones astral projects to adistant paradise, glancing the frosty tips of Norwegian fir trees on his way to exotic locations.

Trading the Scandinavian fjord for a beach in Miami, Raaja finds a bounce in his step, moonwalking his way across groovy keys and shuffling beats through Boardwalks . A sonic palette echoing with the reverberations of bygone days, playing on a collective nostalgia, a Kodak moment turned gif, frozen on a telephone screen.

Hazy chords and playful melodies glisten against temperate rhythmical zones as they roll through the arrangement. Disembodied vocals float in a steamy fog above warm tones, as Raaja’s voice passes through the record like a spectral dream. A rusty vignette forms within crystalline tones as bold synthesizers are coerced into reluctant musical forms, ambling through cheery earworms and rousing rubber bass-lines.

Raaja Bones - Dates On Skates

Known mostly for releases on Spa In Disco, here Spanish producer Alex Arcocha comes to Rayko's Rare Wiri imprint with a track that you can file under 'nu-disco' or 'disco-house' as you see fit. In its Original form, 'Higher' has something of the surging, pulsing feel of Balearic prog, a throbbing Italo-esque bassline underpinning euphoric synths as the uncredited female vocalist informs us that "your love keeps lifting me higher". The remix from Canary Ilya Santana doesn't flip the script too much, but has a druggier, more spangly feel that puts this rub more firmly in the nu-disco camp

Superhero/ Sound Manipulator


Flash Atkins is a super hero who had his gravy days in the 80s saving the world with his ability to manipulate sound.  Unfortunately he's fallen on hard times and can be spotted in the less salubrious parts of London, Manchester and West Yorkshire often stoned or drunk on borrowed money and time.

To make ends meet he uses his special powers to remix and make deep disco music for Paper Recordings.
