Flow Sessions 096 - Meri

Normally, podcasts are easy to do and being motivated, one goes to work in exciting anticipation to let the latest delicacies and accumulated "podcast records" shine.
At 3hrs 33min though, the situation is different. We rummaged deep in the record crate, full of enthusiasm knowing exactly what was being played. Dissatisfied with the result and a musical existential crisis not far away, we reflected and rethought the essence of our music: who are we and what do we want anyway? With detective acumen, we conducted acquisitions for weeks and dove into old and new realms in search of the undefinable. Back to the roots...

It's done. One of the most powerful mixes we've had the pleasure to record so far is in the can. 

We are proud to present our Flow Mix, which is a cross section of our last three years of downtempo with a pinch of reminiscence. On board are many of our own productions, which we are finally proud to show the world in one big mix. 
Much of the style of Dj mixes we represent today may not be immediately recognisable in it. But we still keep familiar principles, because the essence is always the same: the emotion, the smirk and of course grooves for days!
The journey starts quietly and with deep sound and gains momentum as it goes on. 
It ends as it begins: with guitars. The full circle.

Flow Sessions 098 - Amir Telem

The Flow sessions are a very unique podcast series. The project gives the artists so much more space to present their musical vision, and that's exactly what I did in my contribution. I love long DJ sets because with each hour I get deeper into my flow and can take people on a journey with me.  We start with a more leisurely pace, driving through the vastness of indie dance tracks, and spiraling more and more into the worlds of deep and melodic house. My mix winds through the many facets of my DJ sets and includes the different visions of modern electronic music that I like to present on the dancefloors of the world. Over time, the journey becomes more energetic and lands in the realm of more techno sounds. I love to tell stories and gain momentum over time to celebrate music together ecstatically. That's what I wanted to achieve with this mix. I really hope this one brings you joy. Thanks for having me. - Robin

Describing the sound and sonics aesthetics of Robin Schellenberg’s music, one could tend easily to use bold buzzwords like „Melodic Techno“ or „Deep House“  – but there is something more to it: his productions oscillate effortless through a soft dystopian void full of sweeping build up’s: His tracks are drifting endlessly into an infinite sky, twisting from warm unisons into harsher electronics, just to break down into well-tempered saturated up-tempo beats. It's not Dark Techno by definition, but Robin often gets driven towards its aesthetic, without drifting into its cold industrial repetition. His tracks feel like a deep yearning for the horizon, pulling the dancer tenderly forward with soft melancholy. In his DJ-Set’s all of this falls into place, with tempi from 119 – 125 bpm, blending deep, dark and psychedelic elements into heavy sweeping bangers, to slowly lead the dance floor into a sweet and endless decay. Robin released music with labels like Stil Vor Talent, Katermukke, Einmusika and has upcoming releases scheduled for Stil Vor Talent & Katermukke in 2023.

A message from the artist
This year, the unforgettable 2020, I'm celebrating 20 years of Djing.  Its been an incredible journey filled with loads of art, love and positive energy.   The COVID-19 outbreak opened up an opportunity to reset and reflect on where it all started.  Reflecting on my early roots and a time I was young, free, completely transfixed with the art of DJing and the music it embodies. For over 2 decades now, I've managed to develop an ear for all sounds and discovered that music has no borders nor boundaries.  It's an audible escape, that can transpose you to your chosen oasis, albeit within one's own mind.

For this mix, I tried to create a psychedelic journey into sounds that have influenced me as an artist and best represent the community amongst us.  My message through this is for us to remember that everything flows and all is connected, we are but one vibration, floating through space.  

Thank you to Corr and Jai for the invitation and for the great work you are doing with the Flow platform for the community and the greater world.

Heimlich Knüller graces Flow Sessions 028, generations of ravers have had their spirits lifted by this incredible performer. We were lucky enough to have Heimlich play at our inaugural Flow Event at The Sage Club In Berlin, look out for the footage. We look forward to the artists description once it is translated from German... Thank you Deep. This mix starts almost in a folky vein but at 45 minutes really gets into it's groove. You will absolutely be captivated but the sheer talent and imagination that is H.K.

INTERVIEW

Where do you draw your inspiration from?
"Daily life impressions, emotions, atmospheres and places around the world. Also a night out listening to impressive dj’s brings me a lot, which is not much happening at the moment with the current situation of the clubs being closed and I recognized I miss a lot of inspiration from that. But it's interesting that I'm forced to find other sources to get inspiration from. For example I love visual arts and paintings, which I can use to get inspiration from. Also I visit a lot of abandoned places for my events which are all different and have different atmospheres, this gives me a lot of ideas as well. Besides that, I can also get very inspired by simply starting jamming in the studio without any clear goal."

How do you stay focussed in a world of constant distraction?
"I take time to plan in a few days where I only work on music and do nothing else. I am quite quickly distracted, impulsive and all over the place mostly. So I need to have my working place and be able to close myself off."

Do you have a morning routine?
"Not at all, I'm a night person so mostly I start my day after morning."

What fascinates you about your art?
"Several things. It’s a nice feeling to create something out of nothing and I love the way I can travel in my own mind and thoughts through sound. I can listen and work for hours on music and get through different thoughts, feelings and emotions. This works as a sort of meditation which is needed for me. The social way music connects is very fascinating as well. Meeting so many people at different places which I get connected with by sharing the same art, doing projects and learning from each other. And keeping to learn producing music is never ending. There is so much you can create and discover, you can go as far as you want which never gets boring."

What for you is the purpose of art?
"Expression, for me it’s all an expression of life."

Message from the artist - I believe that what’s important for this world is that we listen, share and give back to our communities, Flow Music is doing exactly that, it’s giving artists a chance to be heard in a time that’s more important than ever, with that in mind I performed my set with the intention to connect people with their surroundings and be present in the moment, to feel entranced and free of anything which holds you back.

My live set is based around the idea of reflecting the energy of the audience and the environment to create an experience that will never be the same twice, in able for me to do this I perform with instruments such as the guitar, saxophone, drum machines, synthesisers and sequencers. 
This gives me the complete flexibility and freedom to express myself and capture the moment.

Whoa! How did I get here?

Last thing I remember I was sitting in my room and taking a sip of tea. It tasted quite bitter though, now that I think about it. Should I have taken out the ginger earlier? 
But that doesn’t explain how I ended up in the middle of a desert. 
I can’t say that I hate it though. I wanted to take a vacation for quite a while now… 
But I didn’t pack any sunscreen. Or my phone! If I don’t take pictures, no one will believe me what happened.

As I’m walking the land, more and more plants start to occur and the desert magically changes into a steppe. But as the biodiversity grows, so does the feeling of being observed. Was this cactus just moving, or was it its weird shadow? Someone was snickering now, I’m sure of that! – Come out and show yourself! – Less hesitantly than I would have thought the shadow emerges and reveals his slender silhouette. “I am a doob” it says. “Our kind roams these parts since the dawn of time and it doesn’t happen often that we get visitors.” 

As we wander for a bit and talk, he tells me about their kind and their culture. It seems these creatures have been here longer than any other species that is known to man, living in complete symbiosis with their surroundings. They tend to the earth and the earth gives back generously, so they don’t know jealousy or greed or suffering. What a nice way to live! 

I might just stay for a little longer and listen to his tales of a palmy life.
