"Guajira" is a composition for two violins that builds upon the practice of performing Latin American dance rhythms on string instruments as pioneered by composers such as Astor Piazzola, Arturo Márquez, Alberto Ginastera and Aleksey Igudesman. This piece is based on the Son-Guajira musical genre from Cuba as performed by Guillermo Portabales and contains many references to the percussion section of a salsa band. The most significant of these being the introduction of the "Güiro chop", an extension of the already popular chopping technique which is a revolutionary percussive tool that has become fundamental for rhythmic string playing and that can be found in bluegrass and pop music.
