About:

Bålsam is one of the many musical projects from Anthony Asher - Yates and also one of his more personal projects. “Iʼve always used the music that I make as a means of expression. Almost like Iʼm  painting a picture of the places that iʼve been.. Like an emotion or a feeling I had in 
that moment. So I try to capture that memory the best I can by recording the  sounds of these places in nature that inspire me so much. I want these songs to  be as organic as possible and feel as free flowing as the rivers and streams… so  often times I will began with the field recordings and see where they take me.  This mix was meant to bring us down to the Earth and ground us. I have made my  second home In South America and now I am longing for the landscapes and 
beauty that I feel when I am there”

Our next offering comes from the Highlands of Scotland as Beira presents her debut, “Scry”.

Beira is a producer from Inverness that draws influence from occultism, mythology, paganism and Wicca.

The blueprint and construction of this release is a little different than usual….

Beira came up with the idea for the “Scry” project whilst doing a deep dive through the Bricolage catalogue looking for inspiration.

Her idea was to take stems/samples from eight different producers on the label and rework them into and alongside some of her own 'WIP' productions that she had been struggling to find further motivation for.

Adding these extra potions to an already simmering cauldron of her own sounds and breathing new life into what she describes as a "dormant elixir".

The result is a fascinating collections of disintegrated and mercurial soundscapes that conjure up all manner of moods but also leave room for the imagination. Atmosphere and woven textures take precedence in the process.

The more ambient numbers that begin the EP bring a raw and abstract tension before the pace picks up and we're introduced to some dark and dubby, bass driven, rhythmic tracks. Hacked apart beats that get stitched back together and swirled around. The surreal and otherworldly tension remains in the second half but now with a late night fire burning and an invitation to dance around it.

There's a strong nod to feminism and Scottish mythology throughout that tells a tale of Witchcraft and days gone by. The perfect soundtrack for the Halloween season.

"Scry" melts, bubbles, froths and crackles. It's a beguiling record from a nascent producer that gives us a peek into the potential that's yet to come. Into the future. Into oneself. Thus, to scry.

Ambient Daily - Episode 21 - Waiting For The Night

The 'Noise Print' project began from a desire to create deep, earthy textures. I had an image of walking along a narrow forest path and being very present in the moment. For this album I changed my usual approach by setting a one-hour time limit for each studio session. As soon as I set this limitation my ‘chattery brain’ started stirring up doubts about my ability to work under these confines- an hour wasn’t long enough to create ‘amazing music’ and that setting such restraints would be stopping me from producing quality work. However, once I started working, a diﬀerent, more grounded version of myself emerged-more sure footed and less neurotic and anxious, focused on the present moment rather than getting anxious over future outcomes. And the outcomes were good, I was really happy with the material I was creating and the whole of Noise Print was made in these sessions.  

While I made the album I started to think about identity, shadow selves, unconscious selves, versions of ourselves that are quite diﬀerent from the everyday person we think we are. In many ways this was quite comforting, the thought that my everyday self could take it’s hands of the wheel and let a grown up much more capable person could get on with the work. On reflection I realise that making music is one situation in my life where I’m able to tap into this state without too much diﬃculty (most of the time) but it was during the making of Noise Print that I actually noticed it was happening.  

This led me to think about the concept of shadow selves-alternate versions of our subconscious selves that operate beyond our everyday distractions and influences. Like the image of the forest track-a space where the noisy mental clutter fades, and a deeper, older self takes over.  

To sum this one up-it’s like a walk along a narrow forest path and the present moment is very much alive-your mind is right in ‘the now’ with past and future losing any meaning. The ‘Noise Print’ title came about by me thinking if you could print to tape the sound of your psyche/consciousness when your are in this present focused, deep state.
