Flux Podcast - 20 - Archie

This EP from German duo @not-even-noticed is a music production lover’s dream. Honestly, the sound design and production levels are just beyond belief in my opinion. Needless to say, they have been on heavy rotation since I first received the demos and they aren’t anywhere close to getting old yet.

They somehow straddle the line between beautiful soundscapes and absolute face melting, eyes rolling back, grabbing the person next to yours’s shoulders heat. Does that even make sense? Well I think you get what I mean.

The EP is out next Friday the 21st.

For the first Klasse Wrecks release of 2024, the label looks back to 2020 and a previously digital only track from label co-owner Mr. Ho. During the first lockdown of covid Mr. Ho released '000Baby' as part of the digital 'Homeboys' EP alongside Luca Lozano. An alternative version popped up on the 'Michaelsoft' album in 2021 but the much lauded original has never seen the light of day on wax....until now. The first 10inch on Klasse Wrecks also features a suped and sped up interpretation from Om Unit, who expertly increases the pressure with deft 808 bass subs, a half time swagger and dubbed out atmospherics.

Almost exactly a year since since ‘Felt Cute’ debuted on Kalahari and Blu:sh is back in the building. But this time around, it’s with a record evoking the muggy closeness of a dancefloor suspended somewhere between peak-time elation and wide-eyed vision quest.

Tweaking the blueprint to rapturous ends, the latest offering from this Blu:sh project propels itself forward with a muscle-bound groove. Six robust, deadly club trax replicate the breathy seduction of its predecessor, but this time, with added velocity.

Pinky Promise is full frontal and deadly while channelled through the same explorative prism characterising Benoit’s best work. Probably the toughest material the prolific shapeshifter has put out to date.

Nods to Eurocentric styles shine through with particular emphasis on the sexy and trance-inducing. It goes straight out the traps with a big dose of fractal fuel and stays murkily psychedelic to the very end.

Well this one has been a long time coming.

My last full release came out over two years ago and in the mean time I’ve mainly been busy parenting it up with my two girls. Music took a bit of a back seat and I think you can all agree that that is probably fair enough.

Now they’ve grown up a bit I’ve finally got some time to get back in the studio and twiddle the old knobs again and boy has it been a joy! I don’t think I realised how much I had missed making freaky bass lines and shooting lazer sounds...

These three tracks are the beginning and I am working on many more that I will be getting out over the next few months so keep those ears peeled and eyes to the ground.

Keeping it widescreen throughout and the percussion pulls focus. At times slick and sultry, at others more ominous and ill-tempered, we’re dishing out high-velocity dynamics across four distinct trax. Constantly nudging towards the peak-time, but with plenty of breathy sensuality and dappled melody as he flexes a detailed, sound-sensitive approach.

Drums, drums and more drums. You know the deal by now: direct torque in full effect as we traverse the rugged, funked-out and percussive. Plenty of trippy flourish for good measure too, from humid fusions of rainforest FX and hallucinatory detail to light trail synths punching through inky abyss.

It all recalls Terry Francis and his Housey Doingz project at the peak of their powers - big stabs, big forward momentum. Think the golden era of their Wiggle parties circa 1999.

It’s been quite a while since our last podcast. So to get us back on track we have something special from the Cómeme crew’s Christian S. Christian Schäfer grew up in Cologne in the 90’s and this is where he developed his love for house, techno and disco. He’s recorded a rather different mix; homage to a time when every proper techno club had an ambient floor. 

Christian had this to say, “I think I have made so many podcasts that I was at a point where I had to reset. Too many bassdrums. So, back to the start, to point zero. This mix is (almost) without bass drums. It’s ambient, chill out, music for travel, late check out music; and after a long weekend this mix even has healing power.” 

Christian recorded this live with both CDJs and turntables early on a Thursday morning.

For our 70th podcast we have a mix from Andy Graham, otherwise known as Sei A. Andy is an ever-evolving producer who has cooked up many different shades of house and techno since emerging in 2008. From dark and melodic to well-swung and bass heavy, he is not one to repeat the same trick twice, as three LPs and more than 15 EPs on labels like Turbo, Life And Death, Kompakt and Aus/Simple have proved before now. Last year the Scottish producer released his third full length, Space in Your Mind.

This mix starts subtly, with textured house and intricate percussion, before morphing into rolling dancefloor heaters such as Passarani's "Wonky Wonky Wonky". Enjoy!
