Just like D Double E is an “MC’s MC”, @Jon1st is a “DJ’s DJ”. That is, he’s developed a solid reputation for mixing and selection since his breakout win of the DMC World Online Championships in 2013. His expertise in the art of turntablism needs to be seen to be believed, with his skill for fast blends and precise chops making him a selector who’s highly in demand. He’s put together the latest in our mix series, and it’s a special 2019 round-up, pulling together some of the productions he’s rated highly over the past year. “This is the tenth edition of my annual megamix series where I mix together some of my favourite tracks released that year that I’ve been playing in my DJ sets in a fast-paced style but also presenting the tracks in new contexts with plenty of blends and edits,” Jon1st says. “This 2019 mix is pretty much all focused on 160-170bpm club music from beats to d&b to the emerging ‘turbo’ 160 sound that Fracture and others have been pushing this year, as well as showcasing a few of my collaborations with Shield, EAN and DJ Craze from the past 12 months.”

AEJQ return to the Fly High camp to deliver their unique strain of jazz prophecies, synthesized using future technologies thru the lens of Irish folk tradition. Following hot on the heels of 2 EPs (Deosil & Sinnen) and a feature on the FHS Vol 2 sampler, all in the last 5 months, the mysterious 5-piece are setting out their stall and proving themselves to be a juggernaut of the new jazz frontier.

Wasting no time, Ubaid kicks off proceedings with driving breakbeats underpinning ethereal synths as the lone voice of a siren calls us ashore, until the script gets flipped with a loping full-fat bassline over half-time drum fills.

Uruk delivers ghostly vocal incantations over a sombre piano refrain, a tranquil sea only disturbed once waves of rhythm crest and crash and pound - think Bristol basements circa '91.

Next up is Akkadian & it's one for the sombre steppahs. Swaying to-and-fro from eire-ey strings to tripped out synths, all sewn together with a sparse 2-step beat and a snare that absolutely slaps.

Gutian closes out this 4-tracker, upping the tempo and lashing a healthy level of cassette-tape warp over dynamic pianos and sax loops. Throw this in the middle of a jungle set and it wouldn't seem out of place.

Though this quintet are yet to reveal themselves in their physical form, their incantations speak for themselves, and it's clear that Aratita is a force to be reckoned with.
