In 2020 we saw the emergence of one of the freshest record labels to emerge out of NYC in an age. We love this label here at 1BTN HQ and are over the moon to hand over the 1BTN airwaves to Our Starry Universe for a 12hr takeover.

DJ’ing since his formative years in the frozen Northern reaches of Yorkshire Johnston has been many things; Acid-House Veteran, Techno Survivor, Alpinist, Hardway Bros and Freelance Disco Consultant but it is his recent production work and now legendary club night that he has best become known for the world over. From the early 90’s institution that was Sabresonic to Disco Bloodbath, Sean has played at many of London’s landmark clubs. He also plays regularly at Berlin’s premier underground venue Salon Zur Wilden Renate, festivals in French castles and the Dalmatian coast, as well as across the whole breadth of this fine aural landscape we live in.

Our Starry Universe Takeover - Sean Johnston - 30.04.2021

Black Light Smoke’s US-based imprint Death Decay Magic invites The Hacker, Cardopusher, Man 2.0 and Adrian Marth to remix tracks from the first three releases on the imprint.

After seven years of brand building as a podcast mix series, Death Decay Magic was launched as a record label in March 2020 by Jordan Lieb aka Black Light Smoke. With a DIY ethos, Death Decay Magic explores the darker, eclectic realms of electronic music, bridging techno with EBM, minimal synth and post-punk.

Death Decay Magic Remixes Vol. 1 is a compilation remix EP, drawing on the first three Death Decay Magic releases; Black Light Smoke ‘Line and Shadows’, Daniel Holt ‘Traveler’, and Man 2.0 & Black Light Smoke ‘Holy Hammer’. Death Decay Magic invites remixes from The Hacker, Cardopusher, Adrian Marth, Man 2.0, and Black Light Smoke on a release that illustrates the labels blueprint perfectly: raw, edgy synth music with ghostly vocals; one foot in techno, the other stepping out into the unknown.

Zone Music boss The Hacker gets things underway with a crunchy remix of Black Light Smoke ‘Lines’ featuring crystalline leads, zapping synths and whirring stabs. Up next, Man 2.0 and Black Light Smoke’s ‘Bodywork’ gets a remix from Classicworks founder Cardopusher as he takes the remix into mystifying territories with revolving modulations bouncing elegantly off the chugging rhythm. Night Noise artist Man 2.0 follows by laying down an industrial-tinged electro remix of ‘Traveler’ with otherworldly atmospheres, gauzy textures and dynamic elements.
Italo Moderni label boss Adrian Marth follows with an interpretation of ‘Bank For God’ as the spiralling EBM sonics flow vigorously and the drilling rhythms get to work underneath. DDM honcho Black Light Smoke then finishes things off with a version of his track, ‘Your Own Hands,’ which fuses rubbery bass grooves, playful melodies and vibrant 909s.

PREMIERE - Zillas On Acid - You You You You (Black Merlin Remix)(Inside Out Records)

Originally released in December 2020 on the mighty British label Nein Records, “Formula” by rising Mexican producer GuzzX (SXDNS178) featuring the collaboration of Diac (FREEDL027), another promising Mexican talent, delivered two well-crafted originals and three must-have remixes made with love by the virtuoso trio Diskontrol (SXDNS254), Ricardo Ruben (SXDNS103), and Undefined Pattern (SXDNS197).

The thing is: A fourth remix was not finished in time to be released together with the others; and considering it would be a great waste of time and effort to leave it unpublished, forgotten in the middle of dozens (maybe hundreds) of unfinished projects inside a dusty and cold hard drive, the artists decided to share it as a free download.

Diskontrol got so excited with the original that he could not hold himself and the flux of creativity that invaded his studio when he was changing and twisting the stems in order to provide his own interpretation of “Monoformula”. The result: A second version – darker, fatter, and faster (due to the Doppler-effect Formula 1 car sound samples) – came out and you can have it entirely for free on our SoundCloud.

It’s time to dance… again! Brazilian rising star Mau Maioli (SXDNS246) and his gang of collaborators – Kauan Marco & ARYELA – bring back their well-received 2021 “Time To Dance” single on Levels Rec but this time featuring a solid team of remixers: Agrabah (SXDNS008 plus SXDNS200/FREEDL016 as part of the duo Caju), Leo Janeiro, and Zombies In Miami, who brought the title track into their respective realms in order to deliver three insightful interpretations of it. Respectively: a funky Nu Disco take, a classy Deep House cut, and a cosmic Indie Dance journey.

With interesting works recently released on spot-on labels such as LoveDogs, U're Guay, Mélopée, Veneno, and Levels Rec itself, Mauricio “Bad Boy” Maioli has been competently carving his name in stone amid the finest acts of the Brazilian good quality electronic music scene. And if you fancy another example of such rising and shining Equatorial talents, here we go: Ágatha Prado aka Agrabah brought her characteristic Funk with shards of Samba sonority to the party and managed to bring to life a beautiful and groovy version with a slappy and naughty bassline and a “se rasga na pista” attitude.

Calm and calculated start, if we compare it to the original, the entity and the amount of softness of the song is almost the same, but with the addition of vocals, I'd say it is even more gentle and refined. The major change and the bait of this version is the provocative and seductive voice. It practically begs you to give in and savor the moment on the grounds that there might never be another one like this.

Quixotical Records (@quixoticalrecords) brings out the - H - and it's single "Tócame" including four different vibes remixes from Cali Burton, Chinosynth, Cubebass, and Poulper. Lovely journey from the sun and beautiful skies to the house of dark.

Cali Burton's (@caliburton) Remix is a different take on 'Tócame'. To some degree, this feels more like a dark tale of a bright and funky original. However, it maintains the substance and integrity but changes the formula. The track becomes more serious, despite a detuned and a bit comical intro. The arrangement is spot on, every single beat and every single sound has a place of it's own. The inclusion of a piano and electronic guitar gave this sense of fulfillment and progression, which we'd all agree are important. Not going so far from the path, but striding just far enough is the ideal middle ground for finding the right angle, it gives us a different perspective and it is very impressive and admirable when someone is able to see how the horizon can be altered to a certain point, but also remain the same in it's essence.

Beyond The Struttosphere return to Gouranga in full force, two years following the release of their lauded debut EP, New Frontier. The title track of Astral Riders imagines the two cosmonauts burning through the atmosphere to a soundtrack of chugging metallic guitar stabs, syncopated arpeggiators and celestial 808 hits, coupled with an extraterrestrial vocal sample from the 1969 cult biker film, Easy Rider. The track builds in momentum, before propelling into cloud nine with a fully tranced-out crescendo. Remix duties are provided by two maestros of the scene: Mexican dark wave legend Rigopolar applies his signature formula to the original, stripping it back to its core components, and bolstering it with cosmic synths, driving motorik percussion and a Donna Summer style bassline that ramps up the groove. Israeli house aficionado Juvë delivers a second remix that draws on elements of deep house and comes loaded with distorted FX, ethereal pads and reverberating low-end synths that culminate in a spectacular drop. 
The second offering, Canyon Grit, is as gnarly and raw as its name suggests: this is full throttle dancefloor banger, commanded by a dynamic resonant chug bassline, reinforced with cutting snares, driving hi-hats, reverbed guitar loops, and Hendrix-inspired psychedelic 303 sequences that will leave you gasping for air. The original is backed by a stellar remix from Tiempo De Maldad, another Mexican stalwart, whose take cruises through hyperspace in unfaltering abandon, with kinetic drum workouts and spacey synths that navigate the tune to its tripped-out conclusion. 
The final track, Set Lasers To Stun, comes laden with intoxicating solo guitar recorded live on a vintage Stratocaster, deployed with euphoric Rhodes piano, galactic laser zaps, twanging new wave guitar chords, and the BTS trademark chug bassline. The EP closes with a remix from Rebolledo, head honcho of Burning Man’s Mayan Warrior and one half of the legendary Pachanga Boys. His contribution remodels the track into a dark and hypnotic desert trip, with dusty FX and dreamlike melodic pads that will no doubt teleport dancefloors into the stratosphere.

Slavik Dzyga (aka Denys Chornomorets) is a Kyiv-based producer working in Indie Dance, Dark-Disco, and Italo genres. He has a special story with Regulardisco, as some of the first demos he sent inspired us to grow a three-year-old party series into a label. Denys has been producing music and performing live for the past four years, and his high skills are perfectly showcased on this debut EP.

Half of the mini-album was performed by Denys live at Regulardisco’s event and later extended with new tracks and remixes from Luca dell’Orso and Ubre Blanca. This is a thoughtful selection of artists to remix tracks - both have been an inspiration to Slavik Dzyga for years and helped him to shape his production style into emotional Italo with catchy, tender melodies, yet maintaining a strong and dance floor-ready vibe.

The musical storytelling of dark desires, life’s constant seductions, and the complexity of relationships resonates perfectly with the art traditionally made by Olga Rodzik.

Currently, Denys is serving in the Ukrainian Army. He managed to finish writing an EP weeks before joining the army to fight russian occupants. This fact, obviously, adds an extra layer of meaning to his work.

As for the second release, the versatile newbeat can be, the versatile this release is. It kicks off with kFactor. A Brazilian EBM-artist, bringing a strong sounding NewBeat track.

On the edge of military rhythms and cheezy acidlines, and an unmistakely ongoing beat. VV303, also an EBM artist, give us more then just pure acid. 303's snorring and humping the dancefloor on fire. Ascended Man is the pseudonim for Olivier Abbeloos, know from T99, Quadraphonia,... joins us on this release with a masterpeace. The track connects modern underground Electro with the strong and dark NewBeat. Another floorfiller.

"Washing the Machine" is the closing track, and a reference to the classic house sound of the Warehouse and other early Traxx, and still fresh and very NewBeat.
As the first release was a huge fresh improvement of todays dancemusic, this release makes the statement clear. FenixFireRecords is here to stay. NewBeat is here to stay.

KFactor - Dementia

Zombies In Miami‘s Canibal and Jenice – last names are for the living – look a lot healthier than their moniker implies, however they do also not seem to catch much sleep. In just about ten years, the Mexican duo has released a stunning series of EPs on labels like Correspondant, Bordello A Parigi or 2MR before signing to the German Permanent Vacation for their forthcoming debut album and launching their own label, aptly titled Creatures Of The Night. All while pursuing their respective solo careers, taking up DJing and working on their live project Planet ZIM.
