Having made their debut on Eskimo in 2020 with the Altered States EP, French duo You Man return to the label to continue their exploration of the psyche with a new 4 track EP, As Above So Below. Where both Altered States' title and hypnotic loops were influenced by the psychedelic experiments of the 1950s, As Above So Below's title explores the occult ideas that ran rampant in fin de siècle Paris and beyond through a series of trance inducing club tracks.

"As Above So Below is an exploration of the fractal nature of reality, the patterns of self-repetition that constitute reality from the furthest reaches of the Universe right down to the nano-structures of our cells," says You Man's Tepat Huleux. "Patterns repeated ad infinitum, but still everything appears different." 

"The plurality of Worlds beyond our own, and the way of traveling from one to the other through modified states of consciousness and hypnosis, is a theme that has always been very important to You Man since our first mysterious encounter," explains Giac Di Falco, who as well as producing music is a trained psychologist and hypnotherapist. 

As for the music, well as you'd expect, the 4 tracks here are a heady mix but still for all the (very) high concepts behind them, they are still proven dancefloor heaters. The title track As Above So Below, draws upon the idea of self-replication, its backbone a chugging bass line and looping synth riff designed to draw the listener's gaze inwards, their reverie only broken by disco stabs and an almost incongruous breakbeat that resets our equilibrium before the track takes us deeper still. Third Eye betrays the influence of Huleux and Di Falco's misspent youth crossing the Franco-Belgium border in search of fun, it's throbbing strobe like EBM pulse not only ready to activate the titular psychic phenomenon but also provides a direct line to those all night raves in Ghent, that both inspired their musical adventures and birthed Eskimo Recordings. 

Something' Higher takes us further up on this trip, an irrepressibly funky acidic bass line and percussive vocal elements lock you into a deep groove, whilst the voice of the late Stephen Hawking and the occasional angelic wash of synths carries us off into the heavens, to give us a glimpse of the universe's infinite possibilities. Closing out the EP then we have Temple of Bloom, a number that drips with sweat and harks back to Todd Terry's early warehouse ready productions with its unstoppable house beat, chopped up breakbeats, percussion that echo off into infinity and discordant industrial stabs that punctuate the track.

Having followed their Eskimo debut with acclaimed remixes for the likes of Polo & Pan, Tensnake and Local Suicide, this new EP further cements the duos growing reputation for creating deep club tracks that embrace everything from the deepest techno and warehouse rave to global sounds and disco vibes that take the listener to the very reaches of consciousness and beyond.

'Garden Of Maria' is a song that was composed based on three pillars: visceral groove, hypnotic melodies and a bulgarian chant, which inspired the theme of the track. The song carries a dense and tribal atmosphere. Some analog synthesizer emulations and ethnic percussion were used to give the desired vibe to the track.

Ambassade's 2019 'Duistre Kamers' album was a huge favourite here at Optimo Music towers so we jumped at the chance to release the follow up; 'The Fool'.

Following hot in the heels of the acclaimed 'Young Birds / Palette' 12" on Optimo Music, 'The Fool' is destined to be another Cold Wave, Synth, New Industrial, Experimental ...whatever you want to call it ...classic. We asked Ambassade to tell us a bit about the album -

Born from several years of research and contemplation on the human mind ‘The Fool’ can be understood as a reflection to the dark energies - natural, political, human and otherwise - that are released when it comes to religion, greed and power.

Historically, some rulers have used religion to legitimise their power. We were also inspired by wanting to examine what negative impact religion can have from the fact that it’s always dominated by men.

This was pursued by exploring a wide range of diverse and unusual types of instruments that took on a new approach of tonal expression, with the use of detuned choral and voice samples, droned tape loops and DIY metal and found percussion. It’s from these diverse sources that the process of creativity keeps persistently mutating. This process was focused through the enigmatic electronic and percussion composition from the band which alternates between foreground and background for the haunting vocal performances.

The first release of 2023 on Damon Jee’s imprint Dust & Blood comes by French duo Kimshies and once again, the guys show what they can do best, explosive indie dance and dark disco for the dancefloor.
Long-time friends and collaborators Peo Watson and Mika Frojman have returned with the latest in a string of releases following their reunion in 2018. After a twelve-year break, the French duo decided to team up again when their 2004 undercover vinyl only tune was brought back into the limelight during one of Solomun’s sets. Since their rebirth, they’ve more than made up for lost time with powerful releases on exclusive labels such as Aeon, Duro and Ombra. Their new offering ‘Blue Planet’ is an intricate and futuristic five-tracker that showcases their unique technical talent and eclectic influences.
The sci-fi-inspired title track invites the listener to dive in head first, setting the tone with its ebb and flow of intricately wrought layers. Urgent stabs combine with a relentless beat and distorted, echoing whispers in a surreal fever dream.
‘Cortex Five Senses’ then brings a retro touch with its driving synth line and unpredictable sound, building up into an explosion of tension as seductive yet almost pleading vocals bleed into each other in a desperate dialogue.
It’s followed by ‘Trapped’ (featuring Erick Faulkner), an intense track that evokes a feeling of unrest and panic with ominous lyrics backed by an aggressive rhythm and urgent sirens.
The electric and evocative ‘Cowboys Don’t Cry’ switches up the vibe with hypnotic riffs straight out of a classic Western movie and a heady, electrifying bassline that runs throughout, perfectly underlining the enigmatic female vocals.
The release wraps up with ‘Coming Out’, an eerie stomper of a track that takes the listener into unfamiliar territory, with distant, almost robotic voices seeping through looming alien sounds and a hard beat.
This unpredictable EP never releases its grip, masterfully building tension from the get-go to leave you breathless and wanting more. Set to be released on April 7th via Damon Jee’s uncompromising and cosmic Dust & Blood imprint.

The release of the 'As Above So Below' EP further cemented You Man's growing reputation for creating deep club tracks that embrace everything from the deepest techno and warehouse rave to global sounds and disco vibes that take the listener to the very reaches of consciousness and beyond.  When the French duo invited Moderna to remix one of the tracks she immediately picked 'Third Eye', saying she "chose the track because she connected with the vocals and felt she could use them in a great way in the remix". After roadtesting the remix on more than one occasion, we can all agree Moderna absolutely nailed it. The remix is a proven -hypnotic- dancefloor heater.

 Like other duos, such as Daft Punk or The Chemical Brothers, Tepat Huleux and Giac Di Falco have been inseparable since they first met at their Calais high school in 1996, bonding over trips across the Belgian border to continue their education at Ghent's legendary warehouse parties. Now under the identity You Man, all their years of learning have enabled the two producers to find their own unique sound which they call "Club Wave", a heady mix of electro club, new wave melodies and dark, deviant and hypnotic disco grooves.
