Last month I was in Copenhagen playing at Strom Festival & caught Surgeon playing a live modular set at God Goes Deep. He totally hypnotised the church with these droney, minimal, ice-cold tones, I fell asleep leaning against the wall and was roused by spooky dialogue some time later. The sense of space and timing was really powerful and i had that in mind when choosing music for this set.

Again, this is a mix of line out and microphone recordings, so you can get a feel for this amazing space.

Long-time resident of The Labyrinth (Japan, @mindgameslaby), Hiyoshi’s vivid, contemplative ambient mixes draw together musical elements from a diversity of sources, yet retain a rare purity of emotion and atmosphere.

With Patterns of Perception 33 Hiyoshi aims to capture the essence of his most affecting sets of the past year, including at Sound Garden, Labyrinth, and One party, while also paying respect to friends and artists who’ve mentored and supported him.

The result is a lucid, ethereal selection, a dance in the diffuse sunlight, on the surface of the lake, always hinting at the depths below.

"For this it’s a mix of some nice deepness leaning into a few different areas, from warmer more upbeat stuff to more full on rippers in the middle somewhere and back to the uplifting gear again. Selecting for this happened quite quickly, with new and older favourites in there, recorded at home on a Taula 4 mixer, two 1210s and Pioneer XDJ700s. It’s hard to pick out any particular special tracks as I love them all but I should mention ’Impulse’ by Phran, featuring Ivy Barkakati. That’s out on Rhythm Control Barcelona, which I stumbled across recently and had to grab both releases urgently! Love this tune and keep getting people asking what it is. Also really had to include a new DJ Soch track on the mix — Jason Grove’s version of ‘Dance Night Away’, out on Skylax! Big big big."

Mike Parker, you would assume, is a perfectionist. His techno is meticulous, his grooves as hypnotic as any. Over the course of two decades he has honed in on his vision with ever increasing accuracy. He manages to get huge amounts of detail into his tunes that elevates them above purely functional material and lands him on labels like Semantica, Prologue and Tresor in both EP and LP format. 

The American is just as deep and powerful as a DJ, even without the use of kick drums. And that’s the path he follows over the course of one absorbing hour here, laying out a cinematic journey into space that is propelled by ambient synths and sci-fi motifs that set real scenes and have a real sense of narrative. At times it is blissful, at others more unnerving, but rarely will you hear an ambient mix as coherent and compelling as this.

Frazer Campbell - Platform 18 Street Festival Podcast

Both as a DJ and a producer, Patrick Gräser aka Answer Code Request has honed a hybrid musical approach that stands out in a world of uniform 4/4 techno. Melding pad-driven harmonies, intricate breaks and an industrial sonic palette, Gräser has occupied a unique space within the Ostgut Ton cosmos since debuting on the label in 2012 and becoming a Berghain resident shortly thereafter. His various releases and remixes for Ostgut Ton, MDR, Dolly Deluxe and Monkeytown Records continue to be highly sought after. As a DJ, he has taken his bass- and breaks-heavy techno to clubs and festivals around the globe, while remaining an integral part of the Berlin scene.

For home use only’ is an anti-club social, a chance to get to know someone/something. A series of transmissions purely dedicated to exploring the other side.

So here we are, number 28. All grown up, thinking we know everything and that the world is at our beck and call. Little do we know, that is exactly what we know - little. Consistently hungry for knowledge, we peruse through the audible world looking for spikes in our interest in every way or form. Sometimes knowledge finds us. In this case, it comes in a form of a single human by the name of Chris, or Chris SSG or Chris of the former musical oracle, MNML SSGS aka Minimal Sausages (r.i.p). And it shall be known from this moment forward as, Number 28. 

 
If you’re reading this then you probably have Chris to thank. He was a pivotal influence in my (and probably your) musical upbringing. For five solid years,Chris and PC (the other founding member) consistently flooded the world with incredible mixes and unbiased musical journalism through their blog. Most of the mixes are still very much alive and well to this day, in-fact they’re quite sort after. After the end of SSGS, Chris moved to Tokyo to continue to sooth the world in his own unique way, veering away from the traditional ideals of “dance” music and how it's perceived and listened to. 

 

This mix is a testament to that. Playing ambient music to a club full of people has always been a personal dream of mine (you don’t have to dance to enjoy yourself and at least there’s a chance that people will finally shut up on the dance floor). Strung together perfectly, the journey entails so many beautiful and subtle twists and turns that it perfectly fits every atmosphere. Just over two hours of pure bliss, I liken the mix to a session in an isolation tank, relaxing yet stimulating. Odd soundscapes laced with beautiful folk music all woven together with the cream of what we now know as “ambient music” (until we find a more appropriate term).

 
Chris will be doing his thing at the next ONO party (TIP! some very good friends doing some very good things/ link below). He’s joining some other great thinkers alike in bring forth of what will be an incredible night of music.

The mistake is in thinking music is about music. Music is about people. The bonds we make, the experiences we share, the conversations we have: this is the meaning and substance of it. This podcast was made possible by Nadine in Germany, Josh and Gregory in Taiwan, Eileen in Singapore, Toss in Japan, Louis in Australia, and all the producers whose music I used. It was recorded at ‘Soft Landing’, the first ambient event hosted by The Council in Singapore in July 2019. The recording reflects that context and moment, but hopefully carries to wherever you are. We're very excited about @Yu_Su. Today the China-born, Canada-based producer, DJ and sound artist has released the very brilliant "Watermelon Woman" – her debut via @Ninja_Tune imprint, Technicolour. To celebrate, she made us this all-vinyl odyssey of a mix.

“I was spending some time at home in between touring in early August and was organising my record shelf," Yu Su says. "I decided to record this mix with some of the records I adore the most. There’s some left field jazz and music concrète stuff, bits from Sun Araw, People Plus, Fizzè, and something from Acting Press. I was playing with the idea of chopped and screwed house music, so I played everything at the wrong speed and at one point was moving the pitch up and down constantly and loved how it sounded. Apologies for the noise here and there... my needles are old and janky, they need to be replaced soon.”
