As summer finally rears its beautiful face, without the shroud of covid to mask its beauty, our limbs start to thaw out and our minds can finally start to unwind. My god, it has been a year; full of ups and downs and smiles and frowns. It’s safe to presume that we all can’t wait to see the other side of it. In this weird musical bubble, however, lockdowns have been fruitful. A silver lining of the silver lining, this offering to the sun god’s is a fitting way to kiss this year goodbye. Said special offering comes from Naarm local Sam Howard aka Ham.

Sam, a fellow wordsmith, and brethren of the beat. She knows her way around the decks, as well as the keyboard. An expert on reporting on, and to the dance floor. A musical journo with a sense of all sides of the dice, bias maybe, but never wrong. A lethal entity when put behind the decks, it’s easy to hear how she exploits her natural sense of rhythm for the powers of good. 

The mix itself is a perfect accompaniment to a backyard soiree to celebrate the coming of the warmth and the return of the outdoor dance. As chill as it is moving, this mix gently coaxes you through the motions to get your body moving again. It is dappled with transcendence and sprinkled with a familiar four by four to bait the mind back to those euphoric moments in the dust listening to loud music. A polite travel guide to convey you from the couch to the dance floor with plenty of stops to rest and replenish. Truly a joy to listen to, this is the soundtrack to begin a weekend away with your dear friends, or kick ons with your step-parents.

As the cold hits harder than ever before, it’s ever more important to add another layer, both mentally and physically. This audio guide is a sure way to light that fire. Walter Saint is the person in question, a man with a firm grip on the axe, dropping trees to fuel this warm sojourn. 

Walter Saint aka Connor Mackenzie grew up on Gadigal land, it’s where he sharpened his axe, and after a trip to the UK (to sharpen his axe further) he’s back in Eora (thanks covid). Whilst abroad, he caught the ear of London based ‘Bloop’ radio’s director and was quickly made a part of the team, taking up a role as editor and his own show on the channel, dubbed  ‘pacific house’ (TIP!) which keeps him busy to this day.  Now back in Eora full time and making moves on this giant chess board we call life, he’s carving his own way through his masterful approach to DJ’ing as well as working his ass off on a release coming later this year, and damn, this mix is sensational; further proving the hard work Connor has put in over the years, and what he’s truly capable of. 

Personally, I feel as though Walter has gone through my life with a shopping trolley and picked out all the premium produce that has soundtracked all the ups and downs for as far back as I can remember. So many damn hits that bait random emotions back into existence, and I know I’m not alone in this. There’s something special in here that’s going to make everyone feel something, and chances are, that it’s going to be closely related to (thesaurus: ecstasy, hope, elation, bliss, etc). 
The talent displayed in weaving this tapestry is another story all together. Beautifully natural in every way, all these tracks fit together so perfectly that one day they will base puzzles on it. The pure essence of cafe del mar brought back to life in such a spectacular way. Go buy a bag of beach sand from Bunnings, light up a shitty coconut candle and mix up a Margarita, then press play, I-BEE-FAH.

FHUO # 71 // Walter Saint

We welcome Tornado Wallace (@tornadowallace), long time friend of the label and whose record 'Falling Sun' we released through Second Circle back in 2016.  Interview (excerpt) down below.

MFM: Hey Lewie, how have you been lately?

TW: I dipped out to East Asia and Australia for the infamous Berlin winter and now I’m back ready for the euro warmth. Though it’s in no hurry to arrive here just yet.

MFM: There's a new record coming on Basic Spirit, the label you run with Jamie Tiller, and it all looks rather secretive... Can you tell us more about it Lew E? :) 

TW: I made these tracks when I was holed up sick for a week. Not being able to go to the studio I relied strictly on samples and software, which was fun to change the workflow up a little bit. I wanted to make some very club ready tracks, without any intention for a release. They (rather obviously) sample two well known tracks, but there’s a lot of new ideas too. I use a different name as it felt like a different style and approach to how I usually go about things. I think there will be more Lew E things on the horizon though :D.

MFM: Previous releases on Basic Spirit also had this '90s touch to it. What is it that you like about (music from) that era?

TW: I grew up in the 90s so a lot of the music coming out then really hits the nostalgic feels. But also, really interesting things were happening with technology, and it became a lot more affordable to put together a record. So there were a lot of - for lack of a better term - laymen releasing electronic music. Some of which had very new and out-there approaches to processes like sampling, mixing and arranging. But trends and technology all moved along so quickly that some of these sounds and ideas never had a chance to get fully fleshed out. Which is why it’s nice to pick up where some left off. People are currently very responsive to this late 90s/early 2000s sound, which is great for me because that’s a time when I really fell in love with electronic music. As a DJ, I’m playing these really personal tracks that I discovered as a teenager, and for the first time since I began playing parties/clubs 18 years ago, people seem to really understand them. It’s a very cool feeling.

MFM: You've also started a new more pop oriented project called a.s.o. together with vocalist Alia Seror O’Neill. Has it always been a dream or goal of yours to start a more band kind of project? Does it require a different writing/recording approach compared to when making dance music for the clubs?

TW: I like making music that I like listening to. And with the pandemic in full swing in 2020, I was having a little break from club music, and diving deeper into other styles of music I enjoy. Both from a listening and producing perspective. I found it to be a very different approach. It’s more melody/hook driven and focuses on getting ideas down quickly as they’re forming. A lot of the time I would use a basic keyboard and guitar to record, and Alia would add vocal melodies and harmonies on the fly. Sometimes it could get difficult when we would both want to put our fleeting ideas down at the same time! On that note, collaboration is never easy for me as I like to have full creative control of whatever it is I’m working on, and sometimes the creative paths divide and compromises have to be made. Sometimes the compromised path is thick and thorny, and sometimes it is paved gold and smells of roses.

MFM: How did you go through the selecting and recording process, any specific record or mood you had planned?

TW: I came across a bunch of really nice tracks all in a relatively similar downtempo/shoegaze style, and wanted to make a mix of music like that. For moody home/car/train etc listening. I also included a forthcoming Cousin remix of an a.s.o. single which I love and wanted to share early!

Q. What can you tell us about the mix?

A. Thanks so much for having me on the series, I've been a big fan for over a decade now 🙂 So the mix has been curated with my interpretation of the MDC spirit in the front of my mind. I’ve loved how so many mixes over the years have danced thoughtfully between home listening and warm fictional dancefloor settings. I wanted the music to reflect some of the sounds and feelings that I love and which you’ve touched upon in your next question. Hopefully the music translates back to the listener in whichever setting they happen to be in. Recently I’ve been listening back to the mix at home while standing in our light filled kitchen making dinner, looking over at our whippet Olive while she snores on her bed. 

Some of my favourite tracks in the mix include Erzulie (Temple Dub Mix) by Mind Over Rhythm from 1992, Tranquillity by Bamboo Curtain, Nick Kelly’s Track – Dew U Feel Me from Trip ‘N Spin Recordings from San Francisco and the track I close out the mix with is a song that really resonates strongly with me, Soundtrack to a Dying by Phil Western. 

Q. You’ve clearly got a real appreciation for deep hypnotic rhythms, tell us about how you became entrenched in this sound, and how long had you been refining things before your debut Moonshoe release came out?

A. Thanks Myles, that’s very kind of you to say. Yeah, I’m pleased with how that release turned out and am just starting to get back to writing some new music again after a busy work period which feels exciting. Shoutout to Jackson as well who heard a couple of early iterations of those tunes and decided to take a risk on working towards a release for me, couldn’t have imagined a better home for the music than Moonshoe.

I’ve been producing music since the start of 2011 and released some stuff under a few different monikers over the years but wasn’t completely confident with my productions until about 2020. I started studying architecture in 2018 and during the degree, didn’t really have much capacity to work on my own music. I was still heavily listening to music throughout the degree and found that having a break from producing during this time helped me to relearn to love making music again. Perhaps there was something about shifting some creative energy away from music for a period?

Q. On your Moonshoe affiliations, I know you have been working with the label for a little while now, tell us about that experience and what have you got in the works?

A. Yes so, Jackson/ Cousin and I have known one another for a while now through going out to parties around Sydney, I used to go and see him and Brad play a lot around town. He met my partner Claudia years back before we’d even started dating and funnily enough, she suggested that we’d probably get along well. I was sending Jackson a bit of music around 2018/2019 and one of the tracks, Transient ended up coming out on the second Limbs compilation, From Inside Out. Jackson ended up getting a job at Sydney University with me in the AV team which hilariously employs many creatives from the Sydney music scene, and we just started hanging out more and regularly grab lunch together. One thing led to another, and he started helping me put Alva together, doing an excellent job of A&R, giving me regular feedback and suggestions for improving the music. I was also giving him some feedback on his own releases for some other labels, which kind of shifted organically into helping him narrow down some music for his upcoming EP on Moonshoe ‘Wake the Town’ which is a 6 tracker coming out in the next couple of months. In the meantime, Cousin has some individual tunes that didn’t quite make the EP coming out through the Moonshoe bandcamp over the next couple of months which I’ve done some mastering work on. Definitely keep watching this space for music coming out on Moonshoe over the course of next year!
