The song is in the style of an American western, with rock influences.

As I was composing this remix, I started to have the nagging feeling that I was reverting to a James Bond feel, especially in the harmonic progressions. I thought it might be because I had just done a few Bond songs and the sound was still in my head. Also, there is a similarity between Bond and the classic western gunslingers... the deadly loner hero whose moral decisions get way into the gray area, but who eventually sides with good and defeats a clear evil. I tried to imagine the character portrayed by the vocalist, and it seemed to me that the song is about this one-on-one rivalry that is very brutal and has a kind of wild, uncivilized feel to it. But the character is (or at least thinks of herself as) a hero on some level.  The wild west felt like the right setting. 

However, after researching both the Bond genre and the modern western, I realized that the similarities between Bond and the western may not be just a reflection of my own musical tendencies. Legendary British film composer John Barry, the guy who made the Bond theme what it is today, also composed the award winning soundtrack to Midnight Cowboy in 1969. That was AFTER Italian composer Ennion Morricone composed the iconic theme to The Good, the Bad and the Ugly in 1966. But the Morricone soundtrack came out well after Barry had composed the soundtrack to Dr. No (1962) and several other Bond films which had already established the Bond musical genre as part of the culture. My theory was that Barry and Morricone had influenced each other.
It turns out that Barry and Morricone were well known musical "rivals" and both were very aware of each other's work. In a 2001 interview, Barry flat out acknowledged this rivalry. It seems to me that the two were more than just rivals, but also influenced each other, even though they would probably both be reluctant to admit it. It appears that Barry and Morricone were two musical gunslingers who faced off on the battlefield of public acknowledgment and both hoped to come out victorious!
Another interesting thing (although not directly related to James Bond) is that Morricone has heavily influenced the works of Quentin Tarantino (although the two men have had a tumultuous on-again off-again personal relationship).  In fact, Morricone actually contributed original themes to Tarantino's Kill Bill movies, Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained. All of these movies also feature the morally ambiguous deadly hero who ultimately triumphs over a clear evil. Tarantino is also a huge Bond fan, and was vying for the spot as director in the 2006 reboot of "Casino Royale." Coincidence? Maybe... but I'm going to say it's more than that.
One other fun fact: The current James Bond, Daniel Craig, also starred in the lead role as a loner gunslinger in the 2011 wild west/sci-fi film Cowboys & Aliens, the soundtrack of which is clearly an homage to Morricone's work. Coincidence? Maybe ... but ... :)
And yet another fun fact: Nancy Sinatra, the performer of the 1967 Bond theme to You Only Live Twice, is also recognized for her work with Lee Hazlewood. Nancy and Lee are known for their western-style themes as well as Bond references (see, for example, Lady Bird and Summer Wine by Nancy and Lee).  Nancy's song "Bang Bang" was featured in Tarantino's Kill Bill (2003). Coincidence? Maybe ... but ... :)
