I've most of my songs free downloads (only exceptions are songs I intend on finishing). If they are wav files, just throw it into a wav to mp3 converter.

I have only used LMMS, Musescore and Audacity up until now, and only free plugins and samples.

I just play around with some ideas. As I like to listen to mostly all kind of (good) music I also do not stick to a specific genre on creating music.
