Baptism and Ongoing Conversion

It's amazing to contemplate the sight of the crowds gathering to welcome Jesus into Jerusalem with palms in hand and chants of Hosanna.  Then after a few debates with the high priests, the scribes, and pharisees; and overturning the money changers tables, the same crowds start yelling, "Crucify Him".   The crowds are fascinating to watch during Passion week.  But there is also a danger to crowd mentality.  As Charles Mackay once said, "Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, one by one."  The crowd mentality can throw logic, reason, and morality out the window and is dangerous.  In the homily I talk about how "the crowd" still attacks God today and why we need to beware of the crowd.

I gave this homily on March 31, 2018 at the Easter Vigil: ordinary form of the Roman Catholic Mass; 8:00 PM Saturday Mass at St. John's in Rapids City. Easter Sunday is the Christian Passover. It’s the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus.  And lo and behold, Easter Sunday lands on April 1st this year, which is April Fool’s Day.  I want to assure you that the empty tomb is not some big April Fool’s Day joke.  The resurrection actually happened.   When Jesus left that tomb he never went back, and we left with him. I gave this homily on June 8, 2018: Readings proper to the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus; Ordinary form of the Roman Catholic Mass; 8:00 AM Friday Mass at St. John's in Rapids City.   In Kentucky, they built a life size version of Noah's Ark. At least to the specifications that are stipulated in the bible story. You can go down there and take of tour of it. But you don't have to go to Kentucky, because we have the new Ark of the Church in the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  As part of the 40 Hours of Divine Mercy that begins June 19th, the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available every day.  We will have several priests hearing confessions at 2:00 PM on Sunday, June 24th, an hour before the closing ceremony with Msgr. Swetland.  Confession helps to remove the spiritual blockages to our own hearts, so that we can receive all the graces that Jesus wants to give us that flows from his Sacred Heart.

Today as we celebrate the first Sunday of Advent, we are reminded that Jesus came once before and He will come again.  And that as we are preparing for Christmas, a remembrance of His first coming, why we should on a daily basis prepare for His second coming.  Today we are also reminded that God made a promise to His people Israel in today's first reading from Isaiah and that Jesus was the fulfillment of that promise.  So today as we begin Advent I focus on God keeping His promises and in the homily I also include a true story from Matthew Kelly's book, "Rediscovering Catholicism" about the underground Catholic Church.  Happy Advent everyone!
