To round off our ‘Women Jungle Producers of the 90s’ series we have a special mix from DJ Flight & Mantra ft MC Chickaboo. The mix exclusively features music made by those in our posts, with releases ranging from years 1993-2001 covering a range of styles. We loved putting this together - completely spontaneous and unplanned, we felt a different energy while recording and were so happy with the end result. It’s left us feeling inspired, invigorated and eager to continue highlighting the stories of women too often overlooked and under appreciated. Hope you enjoy the set.

Very excited to present the next guest in the series - The unstoppable DJ Mantra. At this point she needs little introduction but if you don’t know she - along with partner Double O - is responsible for what has become London’s premier Jungle night - Rupture. They’re actually just about to celebrate their 16th year running. It’s a grass roots event and community and this extends to her work with EQ50 - a collective of women working towards fairer representation within drum and bass.

A real pleasure to talk to and we discuss how she was introduced to Pirate Radio by over-hearing her older brother listening to stations in his bedroom and how she started off her fascination with it all as a garage raver. She’s just someone who is so in touch with grass roots and the building of communities - and these are topics that come up time and time again in this chat.

⁠DJ Bailey⁠ is an important DJ in the history of Jungle and Drum & Bass, a resident at the legendary ⁠Metalheadz Blue Note Sessions⁠ in the mid 90s, a 10-year BBC 1Xtra DJ in the 00s and of course has a history in Pirate Radio on Energy 87.9 FM. He’s an experienced A&R and label owner with Instasound and the passion for finding and presenting new music runs deep. 


He was one of the first established DJs to support my early music and supported it in his DJ sets in the early 2000s and invited myself and Neptune on to his 1xtra show in 2011 so I was always going to have him up on the podcast. 


We discuss how his background in Pirate Radio shaped his career, being a Metalheadz DJ, streaming his own show ‘Straight From The Bedroom’ on UStream, and his move from cutting edge DJ to passionate archivist and story teller. Make no mistake, Bailey still has his finger on the pulse and continues to host a show on London’s Kool FM. This guy lives for radio and shows no sign of stopping.

SLOW860 is the latest chapter in Charlie Fieber, aka Fracture’s, celebration of pirate radio culture, merging it with his Chopped & Screwed-inspired Slow Astro world. This third "Slow" adventure pushes the concept further, adding another album to his critically acclaimed 0860 project. The result is a 60-minute, unbroken collage of 14 new compositions and 6 'slow ambient' 0860 remixes, interwoven with pirate radio skits and fuzz. Drawing inspiration from The KLF’s Chill Out and his teenage experiences falling asleep to stations like Kool FM and Weekend Rush, familiar elements from Fracture’s work emerge, yet remain hauntingly just out of reach as he deconstructs and extends 0860.

SLOW860 is presented as a 21-track, hour-long album available on cassette, digital, and streaming platforms, along with a 9-track unmixed version. Staying true to pirate radio culture, the deluxe package comes in 'The First Aid Kit'—a term used by stations to describe listeners' stash boxes for enhancing the listening experience. The kit includes 0860 Astrophonica-branded rolling papers, stickers, and three cassette albums: SLOW860, the original 0860 Mixtape, and an exclusive cassette-only bonus, Ambient Signal Test—a 90-minute album of degraded Jungle breakdowns, originally broadcast to test the signal from the accompanying pop-up station, 0860.fm.
Also included is a meticulously curated 64-page zine, Somewhere About Town, designed by Utile. The zine features photography of towers that housed the pirate stations Charlie first tuned into, portraits of contributors to the 0860 podcast, transcripts from broadcasts, police reports, and details of a notorious DTI raid. It’s a snapshot of the culture—a homage to zines like Ravescene and Atmosphere, which offered grassroots reviews and commentary ignored by mainstream press, capturing the DIY spirit of pirate radio.

⁠Sweetpea⁠ is a Producer, DJ, Radio Presenter and Mentor from London who cut her teeth on the legendary ⁠Rude FM 88.2⁠ in late '00s. She is another guest on the show that has gone from humble Pirate Radio beginnings to ⁠hosting a show on BBC Radio⁠, and someone who has a deep respect for community and the uplifting of others via her work with ⁠EQ50⁠ - a mentoring initiative set up to address the imbalance of women in electronic music.
We get into her time on Rude FM and the legendary 'Rush Hour' shows. The clue is in the name but let's just say they were no rules all night back 2 back sessions. Sweetpea now has a show on Kool FM which she is very passionate about doing live as she still gets a buzz out of the interaction and possibility for mishaps and technical issues. I too have a a passion for live radio and in this age of prerecorded shows I think it's important to keep it alive.

Good evening everyone, hope most of you are looking forward to enjoying the Holiday weekend! We have some thing for your ears to ease you into this weekend, welcome to episode 326 of The Everyday Junglist Podcast!

Episode 326 brings us a mix from the mighty Mantra, representing Rupture!
Mantra co-runs the seminal giant, Rupture LDN with Double O and throws the legendary Rupture parties with Double O, showcasing some of the most talented drum n' bass/jungle producers and dj's!

Before we get to the mix, I would like to detail some of my favorite tracks from Mantra that I think all of you should pick up: Powder of Life, Nocturne, and The Hollow, which is a collab with Drum Cypha!

Mantra's mix starts deep, dark and moody, drawing you in, before unleashing with a crisp amen tune. The energy builds with each new tune! The mix rolls out with some upfront tracks with filthy basslines and breaks that belie their incoming onslaught when they drop! The refrain of the mix is a combination of beautifully constructed amens with dreamy atmospheric layers, heavyweight, hard hitters, and bits with some wicked breaks. The mix concludes with a melodic, amen track! The mix is AMAZING!!

Representing real drum and bass at it’s finest, Mantra’s deep and emotive sound in the mix comes from an intense passion for the music. With a selection that’s both inspirational as well as educational, her sets bring the beats into balance and cross the spectrum of dark and uplifting styles. Much more than just a DJ, Mantra has already made an impact across the drum and bass scene and looks set to keep rolling strong. 
Conscious of the history of the music she loves yet always looking to push things forward, she’s no newcomer and her involvement with drum and bass runs much deeper than just a hobby. Having worked for record distributers SRD as well as promoting her own regular club night, Rupture, she’s learnt from the ground up and built a solid foundation on which she continues to grow.
The success of Rupture stands testament to Mantra’s hard work and commitment, and that of her partner Double-O. Borne of a desire to take it back to basics, Rupture has gone from strength to strength with original line ups that combine the best new DJs alongside some of the underground’s leading lights. The night has built up over the past 10 years to form what is now recognized as London’s best underground dnb night. 
Her productions have been supported by dBridge, Loxy, Flight, Storm amongst others. With releases line up on AKO, Repertoire, UVB-76 and Rupture LDN Mantra’s productions are set to keep moving forward in 2018.

As a producer, DJ and label owner Charlie Fieber continues to be an important figure in the development and innovation of UK electronic music genres with a career spanning over two decades. As Fracture, Fieber’s output is prolific and never stands still. From the hyper sped up Techno sound of Turbo to the genre blending Footwork Jungle collaborations with Teklife regulars DJ Earl, DJ Spinn and DJ Taso. He is constantly experimenting and flipping the script and 2022 saw the release of the world building Ambient Electro album Omura with Sam Binga. Releases and affiliations have come from some of the UK’s legendary hardcore continuum labels such as Goldie’s Metalheadz, dBridge’s Exit records, where in 2016 Fieber was part of the mysterious Richie Brains supergroup with fellow experimenters Alix Perez, Chimpo, Fixate, Om Unit, Sam Binga and Stray, and more recently with Alix Perez’s 1985 which saw the curveball collaboration with Kenyan artist Nah Eeto. Fieber’s latest work is his most ambitious to date; '0860’ is an album, radio station and interview series that explores the history and legacy of Pirate Radio and its importance in the development of UK underground music.
As a DJ his sound has travelled with appearances on BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, Boiler Room, Fact Mag, Rinse FM, Keep Hush and multiple US, EU, UK and Asia tours. 
In 2009 the label, Astrophonica, was set up as an output for his own music with Neptune and has since become a home for other like minded and experimental artists such as Sully, Client_03 and Moresounds. Fieber’s impeccable A&R has led to a flawless and in demand back catalogue championed from Annie Mac to Sherelle and with multiple nominations in DJ Mag’s Best Of British awards.
