The river sine... started with an image of an emu feather resynthesized with sine waves. Added textures that I associate with ice snow and water and that were related to the emu feather sine wave digital river sound.

After releasing the very much guitar drone based album "Haptics" album back in May, I decided that I should next do a release with melodies and a more positive sound at the forefront. The first track in almost 2 years that I've put together without the use of at least one guitar is "Scintilla". It's s produced purely on various different software apps and also with the use of a Micro Korg and a Yamaha Tenori-on.

"Scintila" is one of the tracks that will be featuring on the new EP "Iridescent". Clocking in at 11 and a half minutes, It's one of the longest tracks I've written, but also one of my most unique ones to date In my opinion. I always like to try a different approach to song structure and used the melodies in this kinda as building blocks if that makes sense. Stacking them on top of each other until at one point during the song they were all layered in alongside each other before fading back out again.

It all started several months ago when I spotted an old video from Stefan Goetsch aka Hainbach "Don't push the sounds around - working with a graphic score" Ref. [1], a documentary on graphic (music) scores instead of the more common and traditional Western Staff notation (five lines on a staff ) (Ref. [2]). Then more recently a video from Walker Farrell of MakeNoise "Iteration 4: The Score | Make Noise" Ref. [3], also describing the process and it was this last video that finally prompted me to try this for myself.

My graphic score was created quite naively, a sketch on my iPad using my fingers as a drawing "brush", none the less, it was a means of a capturing my thoughts without interruption, without the impediments of formal limitations of more complicated drawing systems. A pencil and paper would have done the job as well!

I purposely left off verbal instructions on the graphic score, leaving that up to the performer.

I set up one of my analogue synthesisers, the Soma Enner as the main performance instrument. The Enner has a very tactile interface between musician and the music produced and allows a combination of textural sounds, melodic sounds and can capture sounds from the outside world through it's piezo pickup connected to it's front plate. To me the graphic score I had to work with implied movement and the Enner was perfect for this, allowing my hands to intimately define the spatial position in space where the sound is coming from.

Next came my six track digital software based recorder, FindTheBeat. This was the glue of tying together musical ideas performed on the Enner. It also allowed me to change the speed of the sound fragments and have them loop and layered as desired.

I then proceeded to record melodic lines on the Enner, through to the Soma COSMOS in rhythmic mode #5 algorithm (favouring 1/6 rhythms), adjusting the SUP/COM and FB settings to gradually bring in new ideas replacing the old, or just looping portions for a while before moving on to the next idea.

This is my 1st of 2 contributions to the Disquiet Junto 0473...a duet with moduS ponY's contribution 'New Unit' to disquiet0472. It is called 'Leaf Blower'

I recorded the sound of leaf blowers working in Kennington Park, South London, on a grey, covid-19 lockdown day, during my one rationed daily excursion. These leaf blowers appear twice, obviously, in the track but also inscrutably as the sampled waveform which provides the melodic/harmonic base. There is subtle modulation of the pitch, and filter throughout. Tools used include:
