Francesca Marguerite Maximé is a Haitian-Dominican Italian-American certified mindfulness meditation teacher, Somatic Experiencing Trauma Healing Practitioner, life coach, wellbeing guide, and poet/author based in Brooklyn, New York. She graduated from Harvard University with a degree in English Literature and spent nearly two decades as a Television News Anchor interviewing celebrities, politicians, and everyday people alike from Hugh Jackman, Blake Lively, Zoe Saldana, Bill Murray and Amy Schumer to Corey Booker, Mike Bloomberg, Gloria Steinem and Mitt Romney, covering some of the most headline-grabbing stories of our time, including 9/11, the Catholic Church priest sex abuse scandal, Occupy Wall Street, and more. She even piloted an F-16 fighter jet with the Air Force Thunderbirds for a story (and no, she did not throw up!).

Maximé is a mindfulness meditation student of Jack Kornfield, Ph.D., and Tara Brach, Ph.D.,  and uses her training in Somatic Experiencing Trauma Healing to support healing-centered and trauma-informed mindfulness and wellbeing offerings in the U.S., primarily in New York City and online. Francesca integrates secular mindfulness wisdom practices on gratitude, forgiveness and compassion with Buddhist psychology, attachment theory, modern neuroscience, psychoeducation, positive neuroplasticity, Nonviolent Communication, Focusing, narrative expression and somatic “bottom-up” approaches to serve individual and group clients and students in her teachings and trainings. Francesca’s focus philosophy is applied mindfulness, rediscovering our shared connection and supporting sustainable wellbeing. In addition to looking inward to heal trauma, Francesca also applies a broader communal lens outward to try and help prevent it. Her work in communities and groups additionally emphasizes issues pertaining to gender, sexual orientation and racial equity and equality.

Stress Response & Shutting Down (17:42)
Speaking to the notion that many humans will naturally exhibit a stress response in the brain when confronted with other people with unfamiliar attributes, Dr. Perry explains how this shutting down of the neocortex makes individuals less open to change and connectivity; and more susceptible to fall into concrete thinking and accepting oversimplified explanations.

“Historically, the major predator of human beings has always been other humans. So when you meet people who are not like you, or have unfamiliar attributes, the default response is to shut down—activate the stress response which will shut down part of your cortex. So instead of becoming more abstract, inclusive, and thoughtful, you become more concrete, categorial, and vulnerable to simple, linear explanations.” – Dr. Bruce Perry

Dr. Colin Ross is an internationally renowned clinician, researcher, author and lecturer in the field of dissociation and trauma-related disorders. He is the founder and President of The Colin A. Dissociation and Flashbacks

Francesca welcomes Dr. Ross and they chat about his background in the field of trauma-related disorders. Dr. Ross explains how he defines dissociation, and talks about flashbacks caused by Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Francesca brings up how hard it is for people to let go of trauma, and they touch on how the mental health field can cause mental health problems. 

“I always say that a flashback flashes back. If it doesn’t have the quality of flashing back, it’s just with you, it doesn’t intrude. So, in order to have the quality of a flashback, it has to be dissociated, disconnected, stuffed inside somewhere.” – Dr. Colin Ross

The Locus-of-Control Shift (24:40)

Francesca asks Dr. Ross about how he sees shame versus guilt. Dr. Ross brings in his concept of the locus-of-control shift, and gives examples from his work with combat veterans who have shifted the blame about loss of life onto themselves as a way to retain some form of control. He talks about why it might be better to label PTSD as Pre-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

A Memorial to Trauma (48:55)

Dr. Ross explores a case where he was treating a woman who was traumatized by sexual abuse. He and Francesca discuss the power of memorials such as the one in Auschwitz, but lament that most trauma survivors don’t have a place like that to put their sorrow and grief. They talk about how addiction manifests as a memorial to trauma, and touch on the ugly history of the mental health field.

Sacred Plant Medicine
Francesca asks Sandor how we can avoid further exploitation of sacred plant medicine, such as peyote, during the psychedelic decriminalization movement. Sandor talks about the need to have awareness and mindfulness around using these powerful medicines. He shares how his people have struggled to protect this medicine, and how the decriminalization effort has lost the sense of respect it needs in an attempt to move too quickly. 

“It’s been a battle since day one to protect our medicine, and grandmas and grandpas have been jailed for utilizing this medicine, peyote. They have been jailed for even practicing our way of life. Indigenous Peyote Conservation Initiative (20:15)
Sandor explains how his organization, the Indigenous Peyote Conservation Initiative, has allowed reconnection, regeneration, and conservation of the sacred peyote medicine. They are also teaching their children about the spiritual harvest of the medicine, ensuring the knowledge is passed on. Francesca talks about the short-term thinking of Western culture.

And when we generate this prayer through positive energy, we are creating this aura, this spiritual aura of energy. This week on the ReRooted Podcast, Francesca is joined by psychologist Carol Gilligan for a conversation around how our identity, development, and relationships are impacted by systematic inequality.
Carol Gilligan is an American feminist, ethicist, and psychologist best known for her work on ethical community and ethical relationships, and certain subject-object problems in ethics. She is a professor at New York University and a visiting professor at the University of Cambridge. She is teaching as a visiting professor at New York University, Abu Dhabi. Carol is best known for her 1982 work, In a Different Voice, and has been credited with inspiring the passage of the 1994 Gender Equity in Education Act.

Why Does Patriarchy Persist?
Carol shares the inspiration for her most recent book, Why Does Patriarchy Persist? – which explores the persistence of patriarchal societies with her co-author, Naomi Snider. Carol and Francesca explore the impact of patriarchal systems on the men and women that they suppress.

“Patriarchy is a hierarchy, democracy is equal voice. You have to have an equal voice if you are going to deal with conflicts in relationships. Whether it is your personal relationships or it is a democracy, it depends on everyone having a voice. Patriarchy elevates the voices of fathers. So it elevates the voices of some men over other men and all men over women.” – Carol Gilligan 

In A Different Voice (14:30)
Francesca and Carol explore Carol’s famous early work, “In A Different Voice.” Carol speaks about the deep traumas and issues that develop when we suppress aspects of our humanity by labeling them masculine and feminine.

“I wrote the essay ‘In A Different Voice’ in the 1970s. Between then and now, there has been a growing consensus that as humans we are relational responsive beings. Increasingly, across the human sciences, scientists are saying that is who we are as human. That was key to the survival as a species – our capacity to cooperate, care and be empathic. What is so interesting is, when did that get gendered feminine? That is where the word patriarchy comes in because this taking of human capacity and saying that, ‘reason is masculine and emotion is feminine,’ or ‘The self is masculine men because men are supposed to be autonomous and self-sufficient. Women are supposed to relational and emotional and responsive to other people – that we don’t really have a voice of our own.” – Carol Gilligan

What Do We Do Now? (35:50)
Carol looks at what everyone, across the gender spectrum, can do to sustain and further the current push back at the American patriarchy. She and Francesca talk about what those who have adopted the patriarchy have to benefit by shifting to a system centered around equality.

Trauma as a Portal

Creating a Relational Culture
Helen and Harville talk about the idea of cultivating a relational culture. Can a change in cultural norms affect the way our relationships function?

“What we are currently engaged in and committed to is a movement in activities toward creating a relational culture. That is a radical shift from the culture we have grown up in in the Western world, at least for the past 200 years, which has been focused on singularity, on the individual, on the isolated person, on the self – without reference to context. Without reference to the fact that we do live in a culture. That we do live in a culture and that the culture is not just a container we live in, it permeates our thoughts and feelings. Every interaction we have with our partners in a relationship is unconsciously mediated by the values of the culture.” – Harville Hendrix

Relationships and the Spiritual Life (7:08)
How can relationships act as a portal to a deeper inner life? Harville takes a look at the way relationships can connect us closer to the essence of being. Helen talks about pursuing a marriage based on partners making a commitment towards healing one another within the relationship.

“There was the romantic phase (of marriage). You marry because you want to get what you want out of it – it’s about me. We think that we are on the cusp of a new kind of marriage, which is a healing partnership. Look at the divorce rate with that other kind of marriage. We think if two people can look at marriage with a new lens. That that both of them come to a marriage wounded and they make a commitment to healing each other’s wound. That is the marriage that endures.” – Helen LaKelly Hunt

Healing Our Wounds (19: 35)
Do the unresolved wounds that we collect as children affect the way we function and relate in our adult relationships. Harville and Helen examine the importance of partners engaging each other in safe and structured dialog, A dialog that constructively and gently sheds truth on the ways our deep seeded wounds are affecting our current relationship.

Cooperation Required (37:45)
We close with a conversation around the need for cooperation in any relationship. Harville and Helen talk about the drastic shift that occurs when both partners make an equal commitment to a relationship.
