The project
Walkingsoundtracks is a dedication to geography, to movement, to voyage crossings.

A singing for the road’s sounds, it tells the history of a multitude of inner fragments coming together to shape a context. This project was born going through field recording, electronic music and acoustic universe, combining writing and improvisation to the casualty of the soundscape’s textures.

2012 is the year of the publication of Tightrope, a work where Nicola Di Croce (guitar, laptop, fieldrecording) first composes this thick texture on different levels, with the help of a large group of musicians.

Following swiftly on from 2013’s ‘Book Of The Folded Forest’ (Home Normal) and 'The Blizzard That Birthed Her' (Facture) the new Orla Wren album ‘Soil Steps’ finds the ever itinerant tui divesting himself from his usual cadre of musical collaborators and travelling, solo, into the Spanish wilderness with a tent and a portable recorder.

The project "Flow Signs" was born by the encounter of Francesco Giannico, electroacoustic musician and video artist, with Theo Allegretti, ambient-jazz pianist and composer, based on a common poetic and musical sensibility that favors natural landscapes, surreal environments and rich interior scenarios, such as particular places from which emerge suggestions that would provide a different view also of our daily life worlds. 

The flow can catapult us into a mental state of conscious unawareness, as though being swept away by a current of water and similarly Francesco Giannico (laptop, field recordings, objects, guitar) and Theo Allegretti (grand piano, prepared piano), with such an expressive approach, create a single cinematic and visionary stream. 

The intuitive, improvised and atypical use of the piano, dropped within ambient and minimal atmospheres and enriched by contemporary jazz strokes, moves hovering always on the lookout for a blend with the interventions brought into play by the other artist that are realized in real-time reprocessing of sound material, distended atmospheres created thanks to the help of pads, glitch, rattles, squeaks and sounds of memory.

It was'nt born as a concept album, but as it was slowly becoming like the music inside it the sound work of Cristiano Deison and Matthew Uggeri ended up finding itself, step by step, enclosed between the narrow walls of an exceptional home. Arriving there from different places and positions, and never actually meeting, Friulian and Milan found themselves, perhaps in spite of themselves, together in uncomfortable rooms which were populated by dark invisible presences. It is not the scenario of a horror movie, there is no tradegy or fear, just the knowledge that somewhere else or the escape itself may be less reassuring than one has hoped. Therefore Francesca Mele's photos, both a seal of the work and source of inspiration for the music seem to further cloak the place in that sense of quiet desperation that daily life often implies.

After releasing Nils Frahm’s two-track solo synthesiser EP ‘Juno’ in a highly sought after 7” edition, Erased Tapes now re-release the original Juno tracks with guest reworks by Border Community's modular synth wizard Luke Abbott and Warp veteran Clark. Both known for their like-minded use of analogue synthesisers in their music, it makes them the perfect artists to rework the originals. Similar to Frahm’s online project ‘Screws Reworked’, where he invited fans to download his solo piano songs to reinterpret them with their own medium of choice, it’s far from being the typical remix EP. Aptly titled ‘Juno Reworked’, it will be released worldwide in the form of a limited 12" Vinyl and Download.

 Francesco Giannico’s ‘Luminance’ is an elegant album. How it luxuriously incorporates elements of the classical with a glossy sheen is quite impressive. At times it sounds akin to Max Richter put through digital synthesis. The result is extraordinarily calming. With this digital sound (and it is quite electronic) there’s a sense of true organic wonder. ‘Luminance’ achieves this human effect by carefully filtering field recordings, guitar plucks, and other reminders that there is a world outside of it. 

                The album begins with ‘Further’ which sets the tone for the album as a mellow, dreamy pillow of a song. ‘Lacks soul’ is an ironic name considering how deep in the center of it is a moving piano piece clouded by so much processing. Part of the joy of the song is how Francesco appears to peel away those digital layers revealing its true heart. On ‘Things we can not get’ things take a different approach. Field recordings are effectively employed on this track, the longest on the entire album. For this album there’s a true sense of drama with an uneasy melody that wheezes by. ‘A quiet dream’ takes the formula for the album and reverses it: beginning with the natural before it submerges into the edited. The album ends on a sleepy note with the narcoleptic ‘Suggestions’. 

Overall it is a lovely nebulous cloud of an album. This is the perfect soundtrack for a cloudy day. For though the sky is obscured there is beauty behind it. Thus the same is true for ‘Luminance’ and its dual digital/natural format.

Francesco Giannico is an electroacoustic musician, a web designer and videographer as well as a sound artist with a thesis on the history of film music, he always infuses his work with rich narrative elements, a cinematic perspective, and a strong sense of place. 

His musical approach is better described as a cinematic journey which pushes the boundaries of digital media even further by incorporating smooth melodies and gentle textures. More canonical instruments such as guitar and piano are constantly present into Francesco Giannico’s music, within interrupted structures or long and dreaming sonorous carpets.
