ARTTU: RISE UP! (PHILPOT)

Whilst 2013 was another exceptional year for Tiefschwarz's
ever-consistent, no-nonsense Souvenir imprint, also marking the year
in which they inaugurated their new NAU sub-label, 2014 promises no
compromise in quality output yet again.

This time, Souvenir turn their attention to a split EP, calling on the
combined talents of familiar names, friends and new faces. Nicson is a
promising London talent is making new steps in the electronic scene
with his releases on Upon You, Tim Green´s imprint Disc Over Music,
Get Physical, Flumo and Holic Trax.  Phil Stumpf &  Reynold aka Sam Rouanet, and Fischer
& Kleber (aka Robert Fischer and Niklas Kleber) are, well, quite
honestly just amazing.

Nicson opens up proceedings with 'Pretty Womens' - warm, moody, acid
tones and funky vocal cuts lie over a woozy bass line. 'Mojar' by
Fischer & Kleber takes things a little deeper and darker with
striding, live percussion, enveloped in pianos and haunting vocal
slurs, constantly pushing up-slope, while Reynold & Phil Stumpf  round things off
with a pulsating, understated groove on 'On The Move.'

These producers embody the spirit of free-flowing creativity that runs
through much of the label's output, presenting a wide and always
unexpected palette of sounds and tempos - distinctive bass-heavy
grooves, informed composition allied with a sharp-edged ear, and never
lacking in a cheeky, natural sense of humour.

Producers are the backbone of any label; developing supportive and genuine relationships with our artists is the core principle of XYZ's development. Our Oppo series is an ode to the figures that we feel are at the foundation of the label's journey thus far.

Mitch Oliver has cemented himself as a pillar of XYZ's artistic direction over the last few years. He's caressed two of the imprint's most emblematic tracks to date. Same Light seized attention with a remix from the one-and-only Hernan Cattaneo, before the sensational Alleghanys skyrocketed to global applause. His Exil EP continued his bespoke impact on the label, and now we pass him the wheel on our seminal series - Oppo.

Oppo gives full creative control to the producer, who essentially functions as the label head on the project. Curating sounds from artists around the world who've influenced his journey thus far, as well as a pristine production of his own, Mitch Oliver presents a project that fully represents his tastes as an artist.

On the A-side, Mitch connects with Carl Sylvestre with an instant classic. 'When You Run' cuts deep into the groove, providing soaring emotive energy with sensational vocal work.

Label favorites Death on the Balcony return to XYZ on the B-side. 'One Big Circle' captures all that we love about the British duo, harnessing timeless house tones with blissful spoken word.

Germany's Flowers On Monday continues the backbone of Oppo - deep melodic movement with crisp basslines carrying the groove from start to finish. 'Dream On' is a delightful offering from two of the scenes finest gents.

Mexico's Eduardo McGregor will be well known to the When We Dip family, as he's been an essential artist on our TOR imprint. He comes correct with playful percussion and swaying synthetic sounds on 'The Hunter'.

David Orin is back! The New Yorker never fails to provide the magic. 'Turquoise' welcomes an Eastern edge, as soothing and surreal vibes rise with an underlying quality that is omnipresent with Orin's work.

Closing out this prolific project is a collaboration between Bodaishin & Lupe Republic. 'Oceans' features NiN, with chopped vocal cuts balancing dreamy delights to ease us out of Oppo.

Flowers On Monday - Dream On

Through the train window the city unfolds like a story without chapters. The Yamanote Line, a perfect loop circling Tokyo, runs from dawn until after midnight—an endless rhythm carrying millions of footsteps through Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Ueno. Every 59 minutes or so the journey completes itself, only to begin again, clockwise or counter-clockwise, outer circle or inner circle.

Somewhere between Ōsaki and Shinagawa, between the precise intervals of two and four minutes, time begins to dissolve. The city passes by in fragments—neon reflections on glass, the hum of conversations, the quiet presence of strangers who may never meet again. Trains move on the left, just like the cars, as if reminding you that even loops have their own direction.

It is less a commute than a daydream: a meditation on repetition, on lives intersecting for the briefest of moments, on the idea that a circle has no end—only the promise of return.

Freeride Millenium head to St Petersburg and the Delicate Features duo for another excellent EP that follows previous great outings on the label.

This pair is made up of singer Radmila Nikogosian and composer Pavel Astvatsaturian and they have consistently put out music that grabs the imagination. Labels like Not Not Fun as well as Freeride Millenium have released their sounds and ensured the pair grow ever more prominent in the scene with their superbly emotional music that draws on ambient, abstract and downtempo.

Opening up the EP is ‘Brume’, a widescreen ambient masterpiece that has fluttering keys and gorgeous pads extending off to the horizon. The majestic ‘Because I Want To’ introduces gentle drums but the focal point again is the exquisite melody, deft keys and angelic vocals that bring heavenly feel.

The halfway point is marked by the super slow and heavy drums of ‘Nude’, a spacious dub cut with ambient beauty soothing your soul, then ‘Pulkovo Lights’ is an eight-minute journey into bumpy rhythms that feature more fantastic synth craft and grand composition. This most delightful of musical trips closes with the stunning melancholy of ‘Way Home’ which has vulnerable keys and acoustic guitars drifting in space.

This is timeless music that is beautifully crafted and is utterly absorbing from start to finish.
