Welcome to Frequency Underground! We feature the best in regional house and techno each and every Thursday. We're stoked to have Atlanta's Sam Wolfe on the show this week! Sam's been crushing it - touring all over the country, putting out releases on UMEK's 1605 record label, and has his own music festival coming up later this month. Despite all that, he's still been kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to support this channel with a mix and interview. So without further adieu - we hope everyone enjoys the interview and mix!

◾Real Name: Sam Wolfe

◾How did you come up with your dj name: I used a ton of aliases throughout my early career and then realized I have a perfectly good name to DJ with..... it was almost like how we don't like to hear our own voices on a recording... growing into your own skin and being comfortable with yourself takes time but is something you need to do if you're going to mature and develop as an artist

◾When did you start djing: I downloaded ableton back in 2010 before I ever started DJing and used that to make live mixes... so although it's true I've only been producing for 2 years I tell people I've been on this journey for since 2010 because I spent 9 years telling myself lame excuses why I could never become a music producer.. that's a mental battle all young artists have to overcome

◾Favorite dj moment: I have many many favorite DJ moments, but probably the most impactful was my first festival at Imagine fest in 2019, even though I just played the silent disco... that was my first time on a stage with 1000 people in front of me. And once I got bit by that bug it really inspired me to step on the gas and go all in on production

◾Favorite genre/subgenre to spin: obviously I love techno, but I really love progressive house, so I'll still spin all the time in Atlanta doing progressive house, & my last release "Reservoir" on Purified was a really cool experience putting out a record that isn't techno.... I won't be doing that again for a long time as I've signed exclusively with Umek and 1605, so will be putting out hard hitting techno for the foreseeable future growing with the label

◾Favorite artists: Eric Prydz, Boris Brejcha, Porter Robinson... and my reason for that is I love how their sets mostly consist of all of their own original music.... they aim to take their listeners on a journey, producing and playing the music that they want to make so I only have the utmost respect for those guys

◾Favorite labels: I am really feeling what Umek is cultivating with 1605--- that's why I am going all in and looking to develop my own unique take on techno and establish it with his label, hopefully can do something unique and different and am very grateful for all of the support early on the Southeast techno scene has given me ❤

FREQUENCY UNDERGROUND INTERVIEW WITH ROBERT WEST:
◾Real Name: Bobby Hackett

◾Current city: Asheville, NC

◾How did you come up with your dj name: My Real first and middle name

◾How and when did you get into djing: 2000 - after 4 years of raving, wanted to be in control of what sounds we were listening too. 🙂


◾Who are your musical influences and what is your inspiration: I listen to everything, and have since I was a little kid. I remember my grandmother tap dancing in the kitchen to big band and swing music while she cooked when I was about 7 or 8. My mother listened to Aerosmith, and Paula Abdul when I was still in single digits. Then moved on to MC Hammer and Guns and Roses when I was about 10. Then in my early teens came grunge and hip hop. My favorite band of all time is Weezer. Favorite Hip hop is OutKast, Cypress Hill, and a Tribe Called quest. 
I’ve had many roommates, and listened to everything from Patsy Cline, to Sublime, to Frank Sinatra and everything in between. 
Around 16 I heard Faithless, and Sneaker Pimps and was hooked on electronic music. I love a good groove. 

◾Describe your sound as a DJ:You could always hear a splash of any genre from anytime frame in my sets. I try to find what I believe are the most unique and magnetic grooves in the tracks I play, with a dash of nostalgia or the unexpected. I want you to dance to grooves that you’ve never heard before, but that you can’t walk away from. 

◾What does the future hold in store for you as an artist: As long as I make people smile and they’re happy while I’m playing, then I’m content. There’s a lot of negative in the world and in peoples lives sometimes.  If I can get people to forget the bad, and be immersed with the happy while I’m playing than I’m happy. If bigger venues and crowds come then that’s great, I’m all for it. but I’m happy to play for 1 person if makes their day better.

FREQUENCY UNDERGROUND INTERVIEW WITH GARAM CLUTCH:

◾ Real Name: Darron Conquest 

◾️ Current city: Atlanta, GA

◾️ DJ Collective: DML (dance.music.lifestyle) (Atlanta) / Secret Grove (Portland, Oregon) 

◾How did you come up with your dj name: The name Garam Clutch comes from the retro video games: Jet Set Radio & Jet Set Radio Future I used to play as a teenager back in early 2000s on the Sega Dreamcast. The story was about a youth skater gang in the fictional city of Tokyo-to going around spraying graffiti claiming turf, battling rival gangs and evading authorities all while listening to this underground pirate radio station called: Jet Set Radio hosted by DJ Professor K.  The names Garam & Clutch are from two of the characters from the games: Garam being in the original game (Jet Set Radio and the sequel) and Clutch (only in the sequel) paying homage to both games. 
Also fun fact: Garam Clutch is a double entendre as Garam in Hindi means “Hot” and Clutch can be interpreted in a couple of ways, I leave that open to the listeners. 

◾️How and when did you get into djing: Back when I was in the Army, when I had some downtime during a deployment in Afghanistan (2011) I would watch vids of Carl Cox playing Timewarp and Big Beach Festival (Tokyo) on a computer at a cafe on the Kandahar Air Force Base. His stage presence, energy, and overall passion for the craft is what inspired me initially. My second deployment in Kuwait (2013) I would curate playlists for MWR events, BBQs, Basketball, Volleyball tournaments and even unit events which I receive a two small unit awards for. After that deployment I bought my first DJ controller in late 2013. 

◾ Describe your sound as a DJ: My style resonates in quality electronic music be it: Deep, Groovy, Minimal, Dubby, Stripped Back, Trippy, Glitchy, Hypnotic, Spacey and so on forward constantly refining and evolving my sound. It has a sense of futurism & mystique to it. A sound palette spectrum of sounds & emotions similar to a visual artist  painting with many contrasting colors. 

Back in 2014, when I was stationed in Colorado Springs, Colorado I was going through a heavy dubstep phase at time and I use to be a regular at a well-known outdoor venue in Morrison called Red Rocks Amphitheater. It was an era where dubstep was thriving and the talent like: Excision, Skrillex, Downlink and others played at the venue.  The dub sound has settled in my mind and hasn’t left since lol. Lastly as I lived in Germany for the second time I’ve explored the underground rave scenes there introducing me Minimal / Deep Tech, Dark Tech House, Berlin Techno along with some friends of mine who I’ve met in my unit that changed my life. 


What does the future hold in store for you as an artist: Heading up to Portland to play with my Secret Grove fam in May opening for the Spring / Summer show experiences at a new venue that I’m so excited for, and will work on some edits and remixes and create into my own original music. Also to play out more in Atlanta as well.

FREQUENCY UNDERGROUND INTERVIEW WITH EDWAR:

◾Real Name: Edwar Sanchez

◾Current city: Atlanta

◾DJ Collective: Dance Music Lifestyle(DML), S3ductiv Rhythm, Roots of rhythm.

◾How did you come up with your dj name: When I introduce myself to someone new they always think it’s Edward or Eduardo but, then I correct them and people always seem to think it’s different or interesting even though it’s one letter short from Edward. 

◾How and when did you get into djing: I used to listen to dj’s like Robbie Rivera, Axwell, Roger Sanchez etc. back in the late 2000’s and I really enjoyed and got inspired by the sound of that era. I later bought a dj controller and started mixing and practicing in my room all day. When I was old enough to start going to shows and festivals I got more into it and started playing at house parties all around my friend group. 

◾Who are your musical influences and what is your inspiration: My inspiration comes from listening and discovering new music and talent. I’m always looking for the fresh new sounds to keep me interested and inspired in my own mixes and productions. My current influences in electronic music range from Guy j , Dosem, Pornbugs, Mihai, Electricano to Thievery Corporation, Hird, Fila Brazilia.

◾Describe your sound as a DJ: My sound can range from dark driving progressive house to deep house, deep/tech, minimal house and breakbeat.

◾What does the future hold in store for you as an artist: I’ve have a release coming out June 28th on Deeper Harmonies with my good friend Tyler better known as Ericsson. I have a lot of ongoing projects for new music. Hoping to release them in the coming months to a year. As far a shows I’ve been quite but looking to start playing around Atlanta again and possibly the west coast.

FREQUENCY UNDERGROUND INTERVIEW WITH SPECTRE:

Real Name: Kyle Field

◾Current city: Charlotte, NC

◾DJ Collective (if applicable): KGBeats
◾How did you come up with your dj name: My DJ name stems from three sources: 1. I am a big fan of the James Bond series and the name of the bad guy group SPECTRE always stood out to me as unique.. 2. One of my favorite video game series - Mass Effect - uses the same word to describe the special group the main character is a part of. 3. Ghosts and spirits in general have always fascinated me so Spectre as a stage name really fits.
◾How and when did you get into djing: I got into DJ'ing as an open-format wedding and special event DJ. One night, about 15 years ago, a fellow DJ friend of mine invited me out to an old club here in Charlotte called Kazba and I was introduced to dance music for the first time. From that moment on I've fallen more and more in love with dance music.

◾Who are your musical influences and what is your inspiration: For electronic music, my influences start with my absolute favorite DJ/Producer, Armin van Buuren. In addition to him, I love Cold Blue, John O'Callaghan, Solarstone, Marsh, Above & Beyond, Wolfgang Gartner, and Gabriel & Dresden.
◾Describe your sound as a DJ: I like to play emotional, uplifting, soulful music...mixed with heavier and harder tracks to create a dynamic journey-type experience. I look at each performance the same way a painter would a painting, with each track being a different color in the painting.

◾What does the future hold in store for you as an artist: I've never been great at predicting the future but I'd like to think that the best of times for me are still yet to come!

◾Real Name: Dylan Friedman
◾Current city: Asheville, NC

◾How did you come up with your dj name: My DJ name stems from the first letter of my name, and that Vitamin D is essential just like I'd want my sets to be essential for the dance floor
◾How and when did you get into djing: I picked it up over the COVID-19 pandemic period after 20+ years of being deeply involved in electronic music as a fan. Everyone kept asking why I wasn't DJing when I had such a good ear for good music. It eventually just happened and I haven't looked back.

◾Who are your musical influences and what is your inspiration:  Trance has always been my first love in electronic music, going all the way back to when I was a kid listening to BBC Radio 1 online on the weekends. My musical influences go back pretty far with artists like Armin van Buuren, John 00 Fleming, Solarstone, and John Digweed. Lately I've been a big fan of the music released on FSOE UV/UV Noir and Settlement.

◾Describe your sound as a DJ: I like to step away from the sound that most people think of when they hear the word "trance" and focus on the deeper, underground, side of the genre rather than the higher BPM uplifting energy that most people think of.

◾What does the future hold in store for you as an artist: I'm working to continue to grow CYBERIA - A Night of Trance and Progressive, the bi-monthly trance and progressive event I throw here in Asheville at The White Rabbit @ Water Street. I look forward to playing to new crowds and in new spaces whenever possible.
