🔺FREQUENCY UNDERGROUND INTERVIEW WITH CHASING🔻

◾ Real Name: Jake Pugh

◾ Current city: Montgomery, Alabama

◾ DJ Collective: Gravity (Montgomery) // ProjectB. (Atlanta)

◾ How did you come up with dj name: We as humans in the modern era default to a state of constant pursuit. Pursuit of money, status, popularity, likes + follows. If we’re not careful, we can leave ourselves behind and get lost, constantly Chasing these things that will fade away as fast as they come. My name - Chasing - is a not-so-subtle reminder to myself and others in this scene to pause and make sure our pursuits and our intentions are focused on the things that can have lasting impacts on ourselves and our world. Empathy, love, equality, emotional intelligence, consciousness of spirit.

◾ When did you start djing: My crew and I began consciously soundtracking our experiences (campfires, long drives, hotel rooms after concerts, living room dance parties, full moon celebrations on the beach) in 2013 by careful playlisting. I believe that was when my mind for this began to take shape. I got my first “decks” in 2016, and played my first public gig in 2017, a diy party in the basement of a now defunct Hookah bar in Montgomery. It was Gravity’s first event and we had no idea it could actually work. About 35 people showed up and actually paid $5 to come dance with us. I closed out Gravity001 with The Rapture by &ME. I was hooked on DJing and Gravity was born.

◾ Favorite dj moment: As the Covid threat was fading, ProjectB. started throwing parties again. I was ecstatic because ProjectB had been home base for me since I got into the Atlanta scene. I know so many people I love because of their parties. Bobi Stevkovski, lead at ProjectB., reached out and asked me to play their biggest annual party, Zemya Fest, which was a huge honor. Zemya is like homecoming for many in the scene. In my opinion, the most important night in dance music in Atlanta each year. Then Bobi informed me I would be taking the 3am slot, and not only that, but the party would be transitioning from patio to inside at Crazy Atlanta at that time so I would be pressing play on an important moment. I opened with the brand new track “Not Enough” by Lazarusman and Hyenah. The monologue in that track spoke to me and many others after a season of rooting out racism following the murder of George Floyd. The crowd was tuned in and reacted to every track that night with pure loving and joyful energy. It was truly moving.

◾ Favorite genre/subgenre to spin: Afrohouse is my original and true love, although I am mostly playing tribal minimal and minimal tech at the moment. For me, Afrohouse has its time and place on bigger soundsystems and stages. I look forward to playing some this Saturday afternoon on the Main stage at Rebirth Festival in Washington, Georgia.

◾ Favorite artists: YokoO, &ME, Traumer, SIS, Damian Lazarus, Pablo Bolivar, Mihai Popiviciu, Markus Homm, Legit Trip, Steve Bug, and to toss a new wild card in there, lefthandsoundsystem. Look her up.

◾ Favorite labels: Keinemusik, Bondage, gettraum, Seven Villas, Poker Flat, Little Helpers, Crosstown Rebels, All Day I Dream, too many more up and coming labels to name, but I want to make special note of a new project I have very very high hopes for. YokoO just launched his new label Satya. Check em out at @satyarecs on Instagram. Releases start flowing soon. It’s a personal goal of mine to one day release with YokoO and Satya. Putting that out into the universe now.
