Before reading this book, I didn't have much of an understanding about the degree of crimes committed at sea, which is why the first chapter moved me the most. Right from the get go, it put into perspective how extreme and unforgiving life on the water can be. I couldn't believe the chase between the Bob Barker and the Thunder, and the lengths in which some of these ships go to in order to avoid the law (and lack of enforcement). The whole book really opened my eyes to another world and I wanted to convey that feeling with these songs. 

The first song takes you through a droney/ambient journey that I wanted to make a sound like the bottom of the ocean. The vibe is dark and deep as it progressively moves toward the surface and abruptly takes you up on the deck of a ship where fishermen are luring nets in unison. I wanted to capture the intensity of this activity by adding some really heavy bass. Ultimately the song moves towards what I felt like was a battle between the Ocean and the people who are destroying it. You can really hear the pureness and beauty of the Sea at the end when all the craziness settles down and all that's left are the waves.

SUBROC was made as part of the WARDUBS challenge where producers challenge each other to make a tune in 24 hours while we're all in quarantine due to COVID-19. I will admit I spent probably a day and a half on this but I'm pretty stoked on how it turned out.
