Breakdown

Combining a passion for melodic psych and darkwave, Red Telephone’s 2023 debut album ‘Hollowing Out’ was described by Clash Music as “Gritty, brilliantly dark and expansive. A deliciously dark, mesmerising and a dystopian-tinged sonic palette that could have been heard in Bowie’s Berlin in the late 1970’s. An impressive and masterful debut.” 

Hailing from Cardiff, the multi-instrumentalists with two sets of brothers in their ranks released their first two singles as a double A-side vinyl on Welsh cult label Popty-Ping and have been championed by Huw Stephens & Steve Lamacq. The five-piece recently finished recording their second album, which is due for release in October 2024.

Dubwiser is a four-piece band featuring singer Jonas Torrance, drummer and producer Spider J with the Sierra Leonian brothers John (guitar) and Eddy Smythe (bass and keys), who bring their signature powerhouse combo of West African grooves and blues stylings.

Land & Sea's self-titled debut EP consisting of four dynamic tracks. 'Finally,' sets the stage with its uplifting breakbeats and deep sub bass. Transitioning to 'Japan,' the tempo slows, transporting you to a different space. 'Butterflies' brings back the breakbeats with a euphoric feeling. 'Chemical Formula' wraps up the EP with an elevating vocal anthem.

Perfect Recluse

Woah! was the final track produced for my new album 'Modulate', and my number one priority whilst working on it was to have some FUN. This mainly consisted of messing around with synths and chopping up live drums, and it felt very liberating to not worry about constructing a verse / chorus type arrangement. I've road tested this during various DJ sets and am pleased to report it came through with flying colours.

Recorded during Chinese New Year at my in-laws in Ningbo, all I had available to me was a 14 year old laptop with an old version of Sony Acid, an acoustic guitar and not much else. I grabbed a recorder and a harmonica before leaving Hangzhou so I could add a little something extra to arrangements and then just used whatever was lying around for percussion, including a cardboard box and a container of toothpicks. Taking out all the treble on the very basic 3 band DAW EQ and pushing the mids a little thankfully means an acoustic guitar can magically become a bass. I finished mixing the EP in a B&B in the Zhejiang countryside. No plugins on the laptop so no delay, reverb, compression or any of that gubbins.
