Blurring the lines between folk and bluegrass.

Assembly Lane brings together four young Newcastle-based musicians immersed in the shared folk traditions of The British Isles and North America. They have developed a reputation for performing dynamic arrangements of traditional and contemporary material from both sides of the Atlantic, effortlessly blending ancient ballads and progressive bluegrass with rich vocal harmonies and instrumental flair. Their debut album 'Northbound,' recorded by Josh Clark at Get Real Audio [Kate Rusby, Flook], is set for release on the 10th of November.

Horovod is an ensemble which performs arrangements of traditional dance music from the Balkans, Turkey and Greece. The line-up is Dov Goldberg (clarinets and sax), Frazer Watson (percussion), Lewis Powell-Reid (accordion and bouzouki, Morag Brown (fiddle) and Tony Abell (double bass).

Birlinn Jiarg – A new sound in Manx Music

Birlinn Jiarg was brought together by multi-instrumentalist Beccy Hurst to perform the traditional Manx music she grew up with as well as her own compositions. Having performed with various Manx bands and dance teams over the years, Beccy moved to England to study on the Folk Degree at Newcastle University.
At the center of Birlinn Jiarg’s sound is the combination of Beccy’s whistle and concertina playing and the clarinet and flute of Freya Rae (Freya Rae and Louis Bingham, Tom Kitching Band). The unusual combination of low whistle and clarinet was what originally inspired the band’s formation and sets Birlinn Jiarg’s sound apart from more traditional line-ups.
Having performed in a duo with Beccy for a few years, Scottish guitarist and bouzouki player Alasdair Paul (Pons Aelius, Kimber/Paul) was a natural choice for Birlinn Jiarg. Completing the quartet’s line-up is bodhránist Callum Younger (Pons Aelius, Trio FCT). Callum and Alasdair have worked together on a variety of projects and their inventive and powerful accompaniment provides a great platform for Beccy's and Freya’s melodic interplay.

Freya is a flute, whistle and clarinet player based around the Scottish Borders and the North East of England. She graduated in 2013 with a 1st in performance from Newcastle's Folk and Traditional music degree and now performs in various groups, teaches private instrumental lessons and works as a performer and workshop leader for Live Music
Now. 

She and Louis Bingham have just released their first album Curlicue through Waulk Records. The album incorporates many of the musical styles and influences that have shaped their playing, mainly focusing on traditional music from Ireland, Brittany and many of their own compositions. 

Freya plays a Miyazawa Boehm system silver flute, a Michael Burke D whistle and a Buffet E13 Clarinet. 

Songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and waterman from Ireland and based in Edinburgh.

"mesmerized" is a music project, mostly instrumental. Music played by "mesmerized" is based on guitar riffs and solos along with keyboards and electronics.

Liz Carroll was born in Chicago of Irish parents. She's a junior and senior All-Ireland Fiddle Champion, and has toured as a solo artist and with the Greenfields of America, Trian, String Sisters, and as part of the duo Liz Carroll & John Doyle. She's featured on ten albums and has appeared on many more. Liz is a recipient of the National Heritage Fellowship Award (1994). In 2010 she became the first Irish-American musician nominated for a Grammy. In 2011, she became the first American-born composer honored with the Cumadóir TG4, Ireland's most significant traditional music prize.
