Emotional Response is delighted to present elsewhere LVI. The 4th of soFa's compilation series, this double LP takes us to the darker side of the elsewhere ouvre, via another 12 artist / 12 track travelogue.

With certain future-retro feelings, this is club music for the open minded. An album that roams from dreamy ambient territories to rhythmic patterns - internationalism for the adventurous DJ.

Rusty slow-mo bangers and post-industrial synth-wave kidnap the listener to a dystopic and shady wasteland. Elements of ethnic folk, vintage vocoders and Gamelan samples all united on one homogeneous selection.

With artists now known to welcoming new brethren, this is an audio trip to leave reality behind. Exotic, hypnotic, tactile, trance-inducing meditations, washed down with a spoonful of magick.

The piece hung in the wardrobe and was never worn - it had meant to be for a special day, evening and night - yet that moment had never come nor would it ever now. The dress was elegant and stylish, red and gold with hints of autumn which ran throughout. It had been bought upon a whim and a longing for something more. Perhaps that was a night in the Mediterranean, a day in the Bahamas or a mystical city getaway beneath the night stars. For now it simply hung, wasted in the back of a closet which was destined for the dust. 

Puma & The Dolphin is set to release a new EP on Chambre Noire, a newly launched label with an eclectic vision. The release is rounded off by a remix from intriguing leftfield producer Michal Turtle who has relaunched a career with great promise.

Leeds trio Joe Gill, Heidi Armitage and Tim Hutton aka Tzamsutsi opening new eclectic Various Lurkers 04 compilation on Space Ritual Records.
If you listen hard enough between the kicks and the high hats and the acid lines and the analogue synths you can hear a micro moment of silence, you could hear a psychedelic frogs.
Although Psychedelic Frogs Are Ok is a mid tempo track, it burns the senses every bit as well as much as any track you would hear at 5am. A heavy acid line plays out while punctuated by trippy tribal cowbell which seep in and out of the track.
All the while heady drums dance alongside fx ridden backwards bass lines among acid guitar parts, either way this will be a nice addition to the catalogue of an artist who will allow you to do anything except hear a psychedelic frogs singing.

There is definitely something "afro" inspired about this latest EP from Puma & The Dolphin, certainly in comparison to pretty much everything else the mysterious Bulgarian project have produced, including a great EP for Canadian imprint Chambre Noire and some stellar inclusions on every one of Dj soFa's highly respected "Elsewhere" compilations.

The story goes that while immersed in domestic life during lockdown in Sofia the music evolved to take in what was happening at home and saw the inclusion of toy instruments, drum playing, the voices of children playing and even the family parrots whistling and squawking in the background. These random ambient insertions when seen in the context of the hypnotic and percussive rhythms and timbres are oddly reminiscent of the late, great Francis Bebey who, although culturally and physically a million miles removed, was also known for recording much of his work at home and who also featured the voices of his children playing.

In fact, it is as much the music's playfulness and simplicity that give the pieces their distinctive character, at times echoing the repetition and mesmerism of Raymond Scott's "Soothing Sounds For Baby" series. Yet, childrens' music this is not. There is a mysticism and depth on one hand and a willingness to experiment on the other that echoes the pioneering experimentalist K. Leimer's early Eno-inspired tape outings (check "Supermarket" for example).

I asked Puma & The Dolphin's Nikko Names if he could share the story behind how these six tracks came together. He had this to say:

"This collection of pieces were created during a monotone period of my life which I have overlaid with colour: a time in which I surrender to the beauty of home life - watching my kids play, feeding the birds - entwining these sounds of my surroundings amongst the rhythmic layers of these pieces. Playing the drums to remind us of the next circle dance for four. There is something mystic to travel only in your head; a shamanic trip inside the body with no concepts and answers."

PRÉMIÈRE: Puma & The Dolphin - Number [Invisible, Inc.]

In 2019, Parisian cinema composer Jean-Gabriel Becker and Japanese composer and multiinstrumentalist Susumu Mukai embarked on the making of an album that was ultimately going to become Time Very Near. 

The album that had been their focus for most of 2019 was finally released with great acclaim in April 2020 through the strangest time in history and echoed with their fellow musicians and producers for its singularity and originality. 

Prompted by a few unsolicited offers for remixes, Becker & Mukai saw an occasion to invite their community of musician and producer friends to re-invent, deconstruct and rebuild the songs on “Time Very Near”. 

Studio mates, friends and colleagues accepted to play the game and re-arranged the pair's global grooves and clattering beats into brand new original tracks. They all contributed to make the line-up for this project read like a who's who of London's electronic music scene: 

Joe Goddard from Hot Chip, who, from his studio next door, had been a witness of the birth of the project, was kind enough to unleash his killer beats on Spice War. 
Old friend Jas Shaw of Simian Mobile Disco fame transformed the tropical sounds of Dark Fields Of The Republic into a dance-floor ready techno workout.. 
Long-time collaborator and friend Sasa Crnobrnja (In Flagranti, Mytron & Ofofo, Auf Togo) took Time Very Near on a trip to Jamaica. Label mate AMA//MIZU stripped Tout Azimuth down to its core to rebuild it with his unique production skills. 
Dreems delivered a sweltering 19 minute version of Dark Fields Of The Republic and a shorter version more suited for a vinyl listen... 
And finally Becker and Mukai chose to don alternative monikers (Zongamin for Mukai and Lux Prima for Becker) to re-interpret their own compositions... 

Like the original album, this remix project gathers sounds and inspiration from an everexpanding palette of influences, assembled into something amorphously intangible that’s simultaneously refreshing and sharp, meandering and cosmic, futuristic but timelessly vintage and manages to expand where the original album left off. 

In a similar process, the remix album's cover is a re-invention of the original album art and will echo the collaborative collage that was created by the pair for “Time Very Near”.

Benedikt Frey is many. Or just one? He is a composer. An arranger. A DJ. A ghost producer. A fan. He plays in bands like INIT, or Dolphins or KEYS +++ produced the last two albums for Chris Imler. Downbeat in experimental dub zones. The goat for Edits and remixes. When house was his nation, he used to listen to pen names like Suedmilch or Venedikt Reyf. He still likes the music formed under their umbrella, but today his tomorrow is not echoed in yesterday. His sound signature moved on. Into the open. He founded labels like R.i.O. or Serious Trouble. 

He lives in Berlin. Physically. In mind Benedikt Frey is at many places. Traveling far thru his home studio that is a flat a studio a flat an instrument a record collection a flat a studio. Everywhere gear, vinyl, tapes, instruments, rooms for spontaneous sonic notions, these moments, when a sudden strike of stimulation falls. He is inspired a lot. For music to dance. Music for films. Music for live shows. Music for dancing glows. Techno, house, downbeat, ambient, jungle, electronics outside the norms. Those transportive ones. Jamming with others. Jamming with his mind. In Berlin Wedding, North of the town, where the lights dimmed low, neighbors share the flow, and a small river runs slow.  As a DJ he plays here, there, everywhere. Big clubs, small shacks, festivals, gatherings. From fast to 90 BPM - as he feels. 

For himself. For the crowd. In the spur. He still remembers his club kid days. Going to dance with friends. Down there in Offenbach. Doing the Robert Johnson. Collective emotions for a better tomorrow. These he still seeks. In his music. His shows. His collaborations. You can book him for a party. For enlightenment. For ecstasy or introspective perspectives. Dancing slow, whilst pirouetting a high-pitched show. 

Since more than a decade. His own music is out there, too. Bringing his spirits in sound. On his own labels. On international imprints like ESP Institute, Hivern Discs, Craigie Knowes, or Emotional Response. Solo works. Driving ones. Slow drills. Teased during his DJ dates around the planet. 

The music plays day and night. Inspiration comes. From a simple kick drum. A movie sequence. A bird on the sill. A picture, totally still. Can’t kick that feeling when it hits. Benedikt Frey. In dreams. In streams. In music. Emotions. Situations. At night. In those flashy lights, when it bites.
