 After a rain-stopping performance at Glastonbury last week, Little Dragon have announced a surprise London show at Corsica Studios as part of Boiler Room TV. The gig will be streamed live online between 7pm-8pm on Tuesday 18 July at http://www.boilerroom.tv/live

Having already been all over the airwaves with ‘Wildfire’ by SBTRKT on which they feature, they are is set to continue their meteoric rise to success with the release of ‘Ritual Union’ which has already bagged plays from Zane Lowe, Annie Mac and Lauren Laverne, who said they are “the coolest band in the world right now”. DJ Shadow seems to agree, having asked them to collaborate on a track for his long-awaited new album. The 12” and digital download will come with an acapella version of ‘Ritual Union’ and two remixes. One is a super smooth offering from on-the-rise German producer Tensnake and the other comes from house producer Maya Jane Cole, currently being streamed on iTunes here:

Since 2009’s critically acclaimed Machine Dreams they have not sat still, touring the globe and making some high profile friends along the way. Damon Albarn invited them to collaborate on two tracks for last year’s Gorillaz record Plastic Beach, which became album highlights for the critics with Pitchfork describing the songs ‘Empire Ants’ and ‘To Binge’ as “two of the most arresting things here; they’re airy, elusive and amazingly beautiful”. Similarly, David Sitek was so taken with singer Yukimi Nagano’s voice after touring with them in 2009, he asked her to lend some vocals to ‘If You Return’ from his solo project Maximum Balloon. And now Big Boi will be producing one of Little Dragon’s songs for his new album, after a certain Andre 3000 tipped him off. As if that wasn’t enough, they appear on Rafael Saadiq’s new album adding vocals to the sublime summer track ‘Just Don’t’.

Ritual Union the single will be release 25th July, with the remix EP to follow on the 15th August.

As well as kicking it with the big dogs like Groove Armada, Hypercolour is known for bringing through the next generation of talent. As such, it is with great pleasure they announce a debut EP on Hypercolour from BareSkin. Of course, age is of no concern when it comes to music - it’s the sounds that matter - but when you hear the unique palette of BareSkin you might be blown away by the fact that he only just turned 18. Get Physical certainly were and have recently signed the youngster’s other project, a band called Wire People, as soon as they heard its offerings. 

The EP opens with ‘Eyes’, the most extroverted dancefloor moment of all, with with a dirty acid bassline fighting for breath between more dexterous analogue trickery above. The choppy, garage-lite vocal is what defines it though, and will likely become an anthem as a result! 

Next, ‘Framework’ favours a more complex rhythmical pattern that goes deep into space as Josh’s pitched down shadowy voice rides along up top. It hiccups along as intricate sonic details make up a patchwork arrangement somewhere between Four Tet and Villalobos. So too is it reminiscent (co- incidentally, of course, as BareSkin was but a child at the time) of the 3/4 Kompakt sound Superpitcher, Mayer and Voigt have all championed in the past. 

Following on, ‘30 Mirrors’ again makes use of a clipped vocal hook (which you may or may not recognise in places), though this one if veiled in euphoria rather than paranoia. It lays over a pumping but grubby bassline as synth soundscapes twist and turn in the background. Simple but effective, it’s characterised by mature restraint and great sense of space.

Finally, ‘Night Squad’, which was co-produced by and features the voice of BareSkin’s best friend and the singer in Wire People, Jake Wiltshire, is a glistening fusion of fuzzy analogue lines and lazy house skip. Dense with acid prickles, glistening percussion and raw drums yet somehow not over cluttered, it’s a devilishly emotional track for someone so young. 

Tough to define singularly as house, bass or techno, this is a diverse EP tied together by genuine rawness and a clear love of hardware aesthetics. Introducing BareSkin...

Benedikt Frey is many. Or just one? He is a composer. An arranger. A DJ. A ghost producer. A fan. He plays in bands like INIT, or Dolphins or KEYS +++ produced the last two albums for Chris Imler. Downbeat in experimental dub zones. The goat for Edits and remixes. When house was his nation, he used to listen to pen names like Suedmilch or Venedikt Reyf. He still likes the music formed under their umbrella, but today his tomorrow is not echoed in yesterday. His sound signature moved on. Into the open. He founded labels like R.i.O. or Serious Trouble. 

He lives in Berlin. Physically. In mind Benedikt Frey is at many places. Traveling far thru his home studio that is a flat a studio a flat an instrument a record collection a flat a studio. Everywhere gear, vinyl, tapes, instruments, rooms for spontaneous sonic notions, these moments, when a sudden strike of stimulation falls. He is inspired a lot. For music to dance. Music for films. Music for live shows. Music for dancing glows. Techno, house, downbeat, ambient, jungle, electronics outside the norms. Those transportive ones. Jamming with others. Jamming with his mind. In Berlin Wedding, North of the town, where the lights dimmed low, neighbors share the flow, and a small river runs slow.  As a DJ he plays here, there, everywhere. Big clubs, small shacks, festivals, gatherings. From fast to 90 BPM - as he feels. 

For himself. For the crowd. In the spur. He still remembers his club kid days. Going to dance with friends. Down there in Offenbach. Doing the Robert Johnson. Collective emotions for a better tomorrow. These he still seeks. In his music. His shows. His collaborations. You can book him for a party. For enlightenment. For ecstasy or introspective perspectives. Dancing slow, whilst pirouetting a high-pitched show. 

Since more than a decade. His own music is out there, too. Bringing his spirits in sound. On his own labels. On international imprints like ESP Institute, Hivern Discs, Craigie Knowes, or Emotional Response. Solo works. Driving ones. Slow drills. Teased during his DJ dates around the planet. 

The music plays day and night. Inspiration comes. From a simple kick drum. A movie sequence. A bird on the sill. A picture, totally still. Can’t kick that feeling when it hits. Benedikt Frey. In dreams. In streams. In music. Emotions. Situations. At night. In those flashy lights, when it bites.
