Monya is originally from Poland and has been signed to respected techno labels with her production. She has seen a quick rise through the techno scene in such a short time and this has seen her play beside many respected techno artists. Through hard work and determination this has earned her bookings at the Internationally renowned Tresor and many other clubs. She just released her first album for BCR and is busy doing remixes and EPs for other labels like, Illegal Alien Records, IF?, Proper New York, and work with many well known artists like Steve Stoll, Bas Mooy, Iformat, Mike Parker, Pfirter, Joseph Mcgeechan. Monya's sound is industrial, bass-heavy, hypnotic techno. She was also in charge of the label nights for BCR and was an important part of the label. Recently, Monya has also began a new project with Joseph McGeechan working on collaborations together. She is managed in North America, Canada by Re-Konstrukt artist management which is one of the leading techno booking agencies.

5 Questions with Monya:

You released your debut album, "Somatics -The Book", on BCR in March 2013, including a vinyl release with remixers Steve Stoll, Bas Mooy and Joseph McGeechan. What was the inspiration for these tracks?

As trivial as it might sounds, life. Thru the past couple of years I’ve experienced the ‘unexpected’... do not want to bore you with all the details but I’ve made a lot of changes in the way I percept not only myself but the world surrounding. Finally I came to the point where all my emotions had to be unleashed. Day by day, tone to tone and ‘Somatics’ was born.

What was your role in BCR, [Berlin Consumer Records], and how did you become involved with the label?

My affair with the label began in 2011, shortly after ‘Bunkerstrasse’ EP has been released. Soon after I became close with the label owner. Honestly not even sure when exactly I became assistant and booking manager.

You play Tresor fairly regularly, what is it that makes the club special for your style of techno?

Tresor is a legend in itself, therefore I find this question a bit odd. ..I guess it is special for any type of techno... it rather makes the industrial style I play sound magical!

What types of music do you follow besides techno?

Where to start the question is! I am very open minded, I guess it all depends on a day and mood I’m currently in... it can be as well rock, Balkan or classic music.

What is coming up next for Monya?

Only good things I hope! I’m now focused on kicking off with my own label Corresponding Positions . All I can say at the moment is that you can expect the first vinyl release very soon, including remixes from well known and respected producers in the industry. I also look forward to my upcoming release with my friend ad.lib including Mike Parker and Bas Mooy remixes.

Spektakel EP comes with four assorted, yet unified tracks of mischievous and sly techno. Herman opens the release with jacking rhythms, driving hi-hat patterns and a shifty synth riff. The jacking characteristics are also present in Tittut, a somewhat more minimal track with slippery grooves. With Sista ordet, things takes a different direction, with it being based on a dirty stab sequence with vocal hooks, as well as classic dirty machine funk with layers of hi-hats. Rackartyg closes the EP with a rise in tempo, classic drum machine sounds and a hectic cunning synth sequence. Sly & shifty, you may rely on us..

Margin Walker got his start playing drum & bass at Detroit warehouse parties in the late 90s before stepping away in 2001. He returned to DJing in 2011, returning to his first love of hard, dark techno.

5 Questions:
According to your bio, you started off dj-ing drum and bass, what caused the switch to techno?

 You know, I don't really have a good reason other than my tastes shifted a bit more into techno and I just kind of went with it. It was the first proper electronic music I heard and I always loved it, so it was probably pretty natural to go that way. That was probably late 2000, and I haven't played d&b since, though I still enjoy it. I really favored the super-heavy, intense stuff so I probably just burned myself out on it or something. Detroit has always had a small but very talented d&b scene, for as long as I've been around to see it.

You co-own the excellent Detroit based label Dystopian Rhythm, with Garrett Dillon. What was the reason for starting it up?

We had talked about starting a label for long time, but never really had the means "back in the day". We both dropped out of it entirely from around 2001 to 2009 or so. Minimal just didn't do it for us, and it felt like a lot of our heroes were just boring us now. When we both started to get fully back into it, we were both in a considerably more secure and stable part of life, and of course the commonality of the internet made it much easier to get in touch with artists we liked and organize everything.


The label has a varied but distinct sound to it. How do you go about curating it?

We actually have pretty different tastes for the most part. Garrett's into a lot of the dark, heavy, peak-time stuff and I really prefer the deep and dubbier end of things. I think so far the label has been pretty accurate at representing a lot of our overlap in taste. We both love weird, synthy, kind-of stuff, and broken-beat. A lot of the music we've released so far either fell in our lap (like the Flex release) or were the result of us meeting someone whose music we enjoyed and getting to know them. It was pretty crazy to put out an Andrei Morant EP, I saw that guy so many times in the late 90's and early 2000's!


Being a resident, how do you feel about the current state of "techno" affairs in the surrounding Detroit area?

It's actually really strong still, with a lot of new talent and plenty of artists coming through. We're pretty spoiled with Movement, and Blank Code does a killer show every month. We've had some success with our events and crowds are getting better and better. There are also some really cool new artists doing stuff you wouldn't necessarily equate with Detroit, like the Slyfoxx and How to Kill guys. It's sometimes hard to get a good crowd for proper techno the same as it is anywhere in the US, but we really can't complain. We're glad to be a part of this current upswing.


Any future projects, shows, label news you're excited about and would like to share?

We've got some really good EPs in the works right now from Angel Costa, Andre Ramos, Dolgener and myself, and an LP from Uun who has really been getting better with every release he does. We haven't done an event in a while but we will be getting that ball rolling again very soon. Thanks for having me!

Margin Walker - From 0-1 Studio Session Vol 068

Uun is darkness on the dancefloor. Coming up in the metal scene of Kansas City, Uun, also known as Ryan Malony, played in multiple regional bands from 2000-2008 before turning his focus to techno.
Since 2007, Uun has put out mixes for Dystopian Rhythm, More or Less, Kansas City Techno, Business Class Records, Feed The Raver, Subterror Radio among others.
In his home base Uun is known for being a member of Kansas city Techno as well as his previous residencies at The Riot Room and The Foundry.
On July 17th, 2013 he released his first EP for Business Class Records. Titled "Minus" it features two originals plus remix duty from Blank Code's Joel Morgan, Naked Lunch's Stevie Wilson, & Dystopian Rhythm's Garret Dillon. He has also self released multiple tracks and two EP's.
December 9th, 2013, marks the release of his second EP, this time for the vaunted Teggno Records. Entitled "Structure", it is a 130bpm techno workout that features two original's plus remixes from techno legend Andrei Morant and NYC based Justin Schumacher.
In 2014, Uun shows no sign of slowing down with multiple new releases and remixes in the works. Be on the lookout for his brand of dubby dark techno.

5 Questions:

You really seemed to burst onto the scene recently. Where did Uun begin?

First I'd like to say thanks for having me on as a guest! I had a great time putting this mix together. The Uun moniker has been around since 2009, but I only really started focusing on techno about a year and a half ago. Before that I was making stuff more in the realm of IDM because I've always been into stuff like that, especially the early Warp Records material like Autechre. My first trip to Detroit for Movement in 2012 changed my direction completely and I haven't looked back since.

What's the scene like in Kansas City?

Kansas City has a lot going for it, its a bit of a crossroads for a lot of major cities so the styles and genres reflect that. However it can also be frustrating as its difficult to pull off a strong singular direction like throwing true techno events on a regular basis. That being said the last couple of years I have seen a bit of a shift from straight up party music to deeper forms of house and techno. We recently hosted a night with DJ Shiva which went off really well, it was one of the first times I saw a pretty large crowd going wild for real nasty techno. This Summer and beyond we are looking to throw more events of that type and I really look forward to helping the scene grow.

What is your workflow like, how do you go about creating music?

I have a pretty structured workflow now that took a LONG time to get down to where it was even remotely efficient and expressive. I used to sit down and kind of be lost as to what to start with or what direction to go in. Now when I sit down to write music I always have an initial idea I'm going off of. Sometimes its a specific sound, sometimes its just a specific clap pattern, but I always try to have a seed of creativity at the center. I often ask myself, "What is the point of this track? What makes it unique?" If I can't come up with an answer immediately I know I need to reevaluate. With how much music there is out there available you really have to have SOMETHING that makes your tunes stand out from the rest. I'm not saying that I really have that yet, but its something I am always working towards and something that I am always very critical of my own work over.

How do you spend your time outside of the studio?

Outside of techno I enjoy PC gaming quite a bit. Right now I'm way into the Diablo III xpac and Dota 2. I'm actually travelling to Seattle this year to watch the Dota 2 grand-finals which I'm really excited about. Other than that I enjoy spending time in the gym. It is often the only time I have time to think and I often come up with ideas while working out. Sound body sound mind!

Any upcoming gigs, releases, or general Uun info you would like to share?

This Summer is going to be really busy which is awesome! Looking forward to spending my third year in a row in Detroit for Movement, its awesome to be around so many like minds and meet so many cool people that love techno as much as I do. I also have a few gigs in St. Louis including one playing with Rrose who is a huge inspiration for me so I'm excited for that opportunity. This winter was particularly brutal weather wise so I spent most of it working on music. June 11th sees the release of my debut album which I couldn't be more excited about. Its coming out on Dystopian Rhythm which is a label I have followed and enjoyed since its launch, so its a great honor to be on there alongside some other awesome talent. Other than that I have a collaberation with Atie Horvat coming out June 15 on Rheostatus, and an EP on Morgan Tomas' label Reloading sometime later in the Summer, as well as a handful of remixes I have done.

Uun - From 0-1 Studio Sessions Vol 069

Joachim Spieth is a long time DJ, producer and label boss of Affin. Whether through the music he produces himself, or the productions he releases on his own imprint, the sounds always operate in their own little pockets away from the norm. It all started with ‘Abi 99’ – one of the earliest 12”s Cologne stable Kompakt ever released. At the time it was supported by legendary UK radio DJ John Peel and, in turn, was followed up with more huge early success in the form of ‘Under Pressure’, a split single EP on Speicher with Michael Mayer. In the years since, there have been tracks licensed to The Orb’s Back to Mine compilation, appearances on labels like Paso, Traum Schallplatten and Tongut and a steady stream of remixes for the likes of Michael Mayer, Einmusik and Guy J, all of which have blurred the lines between techno, minimal and house music in the producers own unique way. Chief amongst Spieth’s achievements are those of his wide-ranging label, Affin. As well as hosting a regular radio show of the same name on Proton and label nights at clubs across Europe, the imprint has clocked up 150 releases, spawned various Selected compilations (including one recently to celebrate its centenary release) and has championed music from artists like Arnaud Le Texier, Samuel L Session, Gez Varley, Truncate, Reggy van Oers and so many more.
 Most recently, the six-year-old outlet has started Affin LTD, a sub-label putting music out on vinyl, with great looking and sounding results. It’s no wonder, then, that revered contemporary DJs like Derrick May, Ben Sims and Laurent Garnier regularly include Affin records in their sets around the world. 
Spieth himself plays a range of top European clubs on a regular basis, impressing crowds at respected venues like Culture Box, Denmark, Tresor, Berlin, Hive Zurich in Switzerland, Kater Holzig in Berlin, and many other European hotspots with his deft blend of groove, melody and atmosphere. His latest vinyl EP release ‘Sensual’ might just be his greatest to date, with the likes of Scuba playing it in his Essential Mix, Depeche Mode’s Martin L Gore (a pop hero for Spieth) charting it on Beatport, Juan Atkins dropping it during his live Beatport stream and many other accolades across the board.

1. How did you find your way into electronic music?

I was touched by music since i was a child. Got a lot of influences while listening music on the radio. As a teenager is was addicted to instrumental Hip Hop, the bridge finally was built by the HEADZ compilation on UK­based Mo Wax label. After i got into Warp Records etc...

2. Now that you have been actively releasing records for 15 years, how do you feel your process has changed?

I like to experiment with sounds. I mainly work with samples since i started to build up my own tunes. Back in the days it was more expensive to get a proper setup, nowadays you can find a lot of awesome software plug­ins doing a great job. Actually i like to mix hardware / software.

3. Your label, Affin, has been steadily releasing quality techno and house for about 7 years. What was your decision to start the label and how do you curate it?

I got some good demo stuff from unknow ppl around. Moreover, i wanted to build something to feel home. Working with labels sometimes isn’t easy if they decide to change their style... So you’re always relying on decisions from others. As i worked with Kompakt, Paso Music and some other labels for years i thought it was just on time to decide on my own what should be released. In the begin i wanted to release “all” music i like but this changed in the last 1 ­ 2 years. Now we’re focussed on techno.

4. What are some of your favorite tracks at the moment?

Never easy to name just a few as i always like so many tunes :­) Dustin Zahn’s “Against The Grain” on his new Drumcode Album is ace. “Hypnopaedia” from Ness on Planet Rhythm is awesome! Not to forget Keith Carnal’s “Prospect” on my own label Affin, ha ha.

5. Any closing thoughts on upcoming releases, label work, etc ?

Ah yes, for sure. I’m very excited about my upcoming 12” Aidan (with rmxs from Samuel L Session & Arnaud Le Texier). Proper techno package... Arnaud also will deliver his 2nd 12” before summer ( with amazing Unam Zetineb rmx) and some more projects are already set up. I’m really happy to see how things developing in the last time regarding Affin.

5 Questions Interview:

1) You're in Pittsburgh these days. Formerly, you were in Portland, Oregon; What was the impetus to relocate to the Steel City?

My wife and I actually didn't have jobs or know anybody in town before moving to Pittsburgh. We were living in Tokyo for a little while after getting married, and decided to make a return to the States somewhere where there were decent job prospects and an affordable cost of living. I wasn't sure what to expect but it's become a really comfortable spot for us. I do miss the funky weirdness of Portland along with many of my great friends there, but I can't say I miss struggling to pay rent.

2) Pittsburgh isn't necessarily on the international radar when it comes to Techno but from our perspective there seems to be a good bit of activity there music-wise. Care to shed some light on the subject for us?

I've been here a little over 4 years now, and it seems to be developing pretty well lately. There are some passionate people here working very hard at putting out some great records and throwing events, not to mention some open minded and responsive crowds ready to get down in whatever dive bar or bath house is hosting some proper techno. It's taken a while to build up to this point but there is worthwhile stuff going on every weekend now, and the local event crews are all working in tandem to make things go off.

3) You run Bleepsequence, a netlabel. You've been at that for awhile now, for how long, and what made you interested in going for the Creative Commons approach?

We've been at it since the start of 2010, it's gone by so fast. I had been collecting so much netlabel music for years up to that point and had connected with a lot of great artists. It just felt like it was the right time to form a collective and start giving back. It's liberating to not have to worry about the financial aspects of running a traditional label, besides the fact that I don't want to have the need to sell units be an indirect influence on the sound. We are all about pure expression, risky experimentalism, and concept exploration.

4) For people who aren't familiar with your sound- how would you describe it, and what outlets can we find your original productions?

I have a wide range of influences and prefer to use unconventional sound palettes and design methods. I always have a hard time nailing down a genre for my music because there's always little pieces of stuff floating around in my pool of sound, deep spacey bleeps, glitchy clicks, pulsing bass, rhythmic drones, or weird dubbed out field recordings. My recording process is often driven by impulsive instinct and spontaneity, as I find that the unexpected things that happen in the studio are usually the most interesting.

I have releases available all over the place. You can find some of it on beatport and bandcamp, or I've also contributed a lot of work to netlabels that you can download for free. And of course, I often release and remix on Bleepsequence. For the most recent EPs, check labels like Make Mistakes, Kalimari Musique, and Abstrakt Records. And let's not forget an appearance on a compilation by From 0-1 back in the day!

5) Any interesting bits on the horizon we should be on the lookout for?

I have an EP of some eclectic stuff coming soon on the netlabel Wondermachine Musique, and another weird techno EP for Make Mistakes. I'm also very excited to be working on some music and sound design for a beautiful and intense arcade shooter called ZeroDay, an independent project that has been in the works for years. It's coming together really well and I can't wait to see what develops with that. I'm also preparing to launch a new channel on youtube that will host a variety of music and technology videos, including stuff like iPad app reviews, hardware demos, random live jams, and whatever else pops into my head. Bleepsequence is showing no signs of slowing down either with several releases in the pipeline, so it's looking like a busy summer ahead!

Bristolian producer Decka is back on his Unterwegs Records imprint with three originals including a remix from PG TUNE boss Philipp Gorbachev.
First making noise in 2015 on Darwin’s Berlin label SPE:C with the 'Begyndelsen’ EP, Decka makes sound that journeys through bare-bones techno and bass, crafting hypnotic polyrhythmic patterns that look both to the big room industrial sound of the German Capital and the sub-low pressure rooted in his home city, Bristol. Decka’s Unterwegs imprint that he runs with The Lady Machine translates to ‘on the move’ correlating with the labels vision to expand upon the idea that music is forever changing, evolving into new territories. ‘Elimination Techniques’ sees Decka invite Russian producer Phillipp Gorbachev for a remix who is known for his flamboyant live sets and productions which can be found on labels such as Comeme and his own PG TUNE label.
‘Balancing Act’ begins proceedings with undulating toughness through beastly drums and shimmering bass growls before ‘Self Evasiveness’ offers up machine-like revolving synths and energising grooves that continue to drive throughout the duration.
On the flip, ‘Elimination Techniques’ lays focus on wavering modulations underneath surging dynamism keeping this peak-time cut flowing until Philipp Gorbachev’s VDNH remix of ‘Elimination Techniques’ moves into industrial territories featuring raw, throbbing kicks and whirling bleeps orbiting around growling synthesis fiercely rounding off this effervescent EP.
